Option Declined on Romero

As expected, the Phillies have declined the $4.5 million team option on left-handed reliever J.C. Romero for 2011.
“Romeo” was signed to a three year, $12 million contract just before the 2008 season to be the situational lefty out of the pen. He did well in his role after signing as a free agent midway through the ’07 season, but was a shell of his former self this year.
In 2008, he was a key contributer for the World Series winning club. However, in 2009, he was nailed for performance-enhancing drug use and battled injuries the past two seasons. Romero will be given a $250,000 buyout.
Mark this one under obvious. Romero was not coming back at that price, both he and the Phillies were well aware of it well in advance. He’ll find work however, and if the Phillies do attempt to bring him back, a minor league deal would be proper.

Memo to Antonio Bastardo:
You are now the main lefty. During the winter… prepare as such.

Good move. I don’t even know if you want Romero back. Between the PED allegations and his lack of control, can’t we move on? Everytime he took the mound, it was an adventure that you’d be watching through your fingers.

Thank you J.C. You threw a lot of balls, but when you were on, you were a gem. Good luck making the amount of money you want to make. 2 wins in the World Series are two things Phillies fans will never forget.

No surprise here….JC was great in 08 was never the same he had moments but they where very few certainly not enough to resign him…Bastardo will have to work hard he has good stuff he also has a little bit of control issue an too much balls down the middle..however i think he has talent with a little work he can become a good reliever….

He was suspended specifically for taking 6-Oxo. It’s an over the counter supplement that he went to the players union rep and inquired about before taking. He was told it was ok before he was told it was a no-no.
Did he take roids or HGH? There is absolutely no proof. 6-Oxo is a pretty worthless supplement, I can assure you this as I’m a pretty avid weightlifter.

Tony “Inglorious” Bastardo. Gonna need another lefty. Brian Fuentes, anyone?

Chuck: At the bottom of that article it mentions that he “may have to settle for one year and $4MM unless Beverly Hills Sports Council can create a bidding war.”
In my opinion, that type of deal would be totally worth it. We need 2 lefties out of the pen anyway, and he’s very good insurance as a closer if Lidge goes back to his inconsistent ways.

I know. That’s why I posted it. The key word in the sentence is “settle.”
He’s nasty against lefties, too. And….he’s got experience and can maybe mentor the young Antonio.

Cliff Lee on the Phillies: “It’s weird, when a team gets rid of you, you kind of want them to lose.”

J C Romero went down hill fast. I wish him luck. We do need another lefty out of the pen to complement Bastardo., who has yet to prove himself. Good Move to let JC go and save the money.

There isnt many options out there for bullpen help. This is where teams like the Braves as much ish as people talk about shine at. They seem to have a Knack for bringing up excellent young arms. Bastardo will have to go through a mentoring/learning period. According to the article Fuentes has a case of the Walkitis. Isnt that what Romero main problem was. Is Contreras coming back. As crazy as it sound our bullpen did a great job in the Playoffs. Well i digress…

JAY: On the one hand: Gee, that’s nice Cliffee. Thanks for thinking of YOUR EX-TEAMMATES & US FANS who missed you and kicked up a fuss with your departure. It’s not like anyone wanted you to go. REAL NICE.
On the other hand: It’s only human for him to want the bastard who used him & dumped him to lose exactly what he was going after when he dumped him.
Behind all the above I think to myself: Discretion; think it & keep it to yourself Clifton Phifer Lee.
