Phils End Season with Loss, Will Play Reds in NLDS

2010 Game Recaps, Posts

As of now, the Phillies still do not know which team they’ll face in the NLDS starting Wednesday. This, after Atlanta took the finale, 8-7, to keep their season alive.

In what was a wild game that saw the Phillies use Cole Hamels, Roy Oswalt, and Joe Blanton, the Phillies were unable to finish off a comeback from an 8-2 deficit. In the end, the Braves turned it on with their backs against the wall and pounded the likes of Danys Baez, J.C. Romero and Blanton, while the Phillies seemingly used their entire 40-man roster. Atlanta absolutely needed to win, especially with this being Bobby Cox final regular season game as manager.

The Phillies were given a couple of injury scares in a meaningless game. Carlos Ruiz was hit by a pitch on the elbow and was taken out of the game. X-rays were negative, and according to Todd Zolecki of MLB.com, Ruiz thinks he should be OK to go for Wednesday – so breathe a sigh of relief. Also, J.C. Romero left with a tight lower back, he too should be fine for the start of the NLDS.

So, about Wednesday. We’ll soon know what happens with the Padres and Giants game and once that game is through, the Phillies will know if they’ll have an opponent or if they’ll have to wait until tuesday.

As far as the postseason roster is concerned, the Phillies don’t have to make any decision until Wednesday at 10 a.m.

We’ll update this post when the Giants/Padres game is over.

UPDATE, 8:15 pm: The Phillies will play the Cincinnati Reds in the NLDS after the Giants dispatched the Padres, 3-0, to win the NL West.

Game 1 will begin at 5:07 p.m. on Wednesday. Game 2 on Friday starts at 6:07 p.m. More coming here on PhilliesNation.com!

  • EAGLES SUCK,THANK GOD FOR PHILS-Giants win. The Phillies will play the Reds in the NLDS. It’s Halladay vs. Volquez in Game 1 on Wednesday at Citizens Bank Park.

I’m assuming because the Yankees are playing Wednesday, we will get the early game, by default.

I was following the Pads/Giants then realized if the Phills play the way they are capable, it wont matter how the cards fell. Bring on the Reds and their 4.03 team ERA.

Yeah the Eagles have officially taken my interest away from football. So many let downs over the years too many highs and lows. They looked like they were building a winning tradition but now they trade away the face of the franchise… have an undersized defense and dismal offensive line.

I think I am just not interested in wasting my Sunday afternoons anymore. I think I am just focusing on the Phillies!!

Halladay vs Volquez should be an interesting match up.

The Phillies have notoriously had trouble with pitchers they have not seen that often

We will see about that Brooks…neither the Yankees nor the Phillies match up against the los Gigiantes.

Giants have to get past the Braves then face the Phils – the Giants may be the only team to take the Phils to a long series (6 or 7 games) but there is no way they take the series.

    Any prognostications for the AL?
    Yanks at Twins -
The Twins are 2-8 in their last 10 games – the Yanks have lost their last 4 series and are 4-8 in that span.
I just think the Yanks are too tough but both teams are playing badly. I’m pretty sure we all agree who is going to be in the ALCS, it will be the Yanks at Tampa all over again.
    Tex at Tampa -
As much as I have liked what Texas has done, the Rays are just too strong all the way through. Hamilton, Vlad, Lee – cannot carry the Rangers past the Rays in a series, no way.

I think the Yanks will face the Rays in a 7 game knockout series and I think the Rays will take it in 7. Although I would much rather pound the Yanks than the Rays – Tampa I think will be the elite (young too) to come out of the AL.

in a 7 game series against the Phillies…Giants will have 4 of those games with either Lincecum or Jonathan Sanchez on the mound. Those are all garunteed losses for the Phillies. Make a note of that. Remember that I made this prediction.

  • OK RYAN,WE WILL SEE-I WILL REMEMBER!!!

I also say that they sweep the Braves. lmao.

  • NO WAY LINCECUM IS A AUTOMATIC WIN,SORRY………..HOW MUCH POSTSEASON EXP. DO THOSE TWO HAVE?????

In a 7 game series the Phillies will throw out H2O 6 times and have a FAR better lineup. The best offensive players on the Giants have been recycled off the scrap heap. Oh, and a rookie. Doc and Roy2 have something for that Azzz. Believe it.

  • RYAN YOU MAY BE RIGHT ABOUT THE SWEEPING BRAVES PART…LOL

    Ryan makes a good point.

    The Giants ARE FOR REAL.

Dudes….time to get your heads out of the sand.

The Phillies CAN beat the Giants…and have an excellent shot at doing so….but i wouldn’t be shocked at all if they didn’t.

I feel like Nostradamus right now… Except I’m actually going to be right…

  • HEADS OUT OF THE SAND??WHY BECAUSE WE BELIEVE THAT THE PHILLIES ARE BETTER?

I didn’t say that I didn’t think the Phillies are better.

What I said was that the Giants are for real and that I wouldn’t be shocked at all if they beat the Phillies in the NLCS.

Baseball history is littered with “better” teams losing in the postseason.

I have absolutely no doubt that Phillies are the best team this year in baseball.

Oswalt and Doc signed up with Phillies for cheaper deals only to get their WCS rings and they will do their best to achieve that.
At this point i don’t see any weaklinks in Phillies team. They should have a cake walk rest of the way.

Neither Reds nor giants/braves will pose any threat.

Bobby Cox has screwed up the braves bullpen overusing them.. Poor guys half of them will be getting their Tommy John’s next year.

I used to say Braves have a A class pitching and A+Bullpen.. That is not true anymore.. Hudson is hittable, and Bullpen have deadarms .

Fielding is at its worst. Only positive I see is Derek Lee and Jason Heyward, rest are all struggling.

    Good Luck Phillies.

How the hell will the Phils and Giants play a 7 game series? Only 7 game series in baseball is the World series….So from someone who doesn’t know that much about baseball, isn’t intelligent enough to pick a world series winner, sorry brah

Only worry if at all for Phillies could be Joey Votto. He could knock a few homers and keep Reds in the game.., but their young pitchers are not going to be any good in playoffs..

  • LAND SHARK,2ND ROUND IS A 7-GAME SERIES……..

No team in baseball wants it with the Phillies this season…In all honesty I think the Braves are tough enough to sweep the Giants, and we all know what we done to the braves these last 2 weeks (5-1 baby)

  • OR THE NLCS,I SHOULD SAY……

Land Shark, Looks like you are baseball illiterate.., LCS games are best of 7.., I have seen quite a few guys on this blog with absolutely no basic knowledge of baseball..,

  • BUT I DO AGREE WITH YOU ABOUT THE PHILLIES……

Jay…I know. What Im saying is that the Giants aren’t going to get passed the Braves to even see a 7 game series with the Phils

Land Shark…YOU’RE the one “who doesn’t know that much about baseball” if you think that the NLCS and ALCS are 5 game series.

Okay, Okay….I admit I didn’t realize that it was a 7 game series. Guess I am an idiot, but HEY! They still aren’t beating the Phillies lol

@Ryan – after this weekend when the “Gigiantes” just barely got by the Padres, you’re now callling for a WS win? Please share more on this uninspiring team that squeaked in to the playoffs.

Chuck, Don’t worry about that bruce guy..,

Jay Bruce can only hit in that Great American “Small park”.., He has 18homers in that small park and 6 else where..,
