Votto Wins NL MVP as Three Phillies Finish in Top 10

Joey Votto was named the National League Most Valuable Player today in a landslide vote, with Albert Pujols finishing second and Carlos Gonzalez third. Votto grabbed 31 of the 32 first place votes (Pujols got the other) while three Phillies finished in the Top 10.
Roy Halladay received one second place vote and three third place votes to finish sixth with 130 points. In eighth place was Jayson Werth; his highest vote was a fifth rounder. Werth had 52 points. Ryan Howard was 10th with 50 points, however, he grabbed a second place vote and a third place vote, a bit of a surprise. Catcher Carlos Ruiz even took home three votes to place 17th. Congrats to Chooch.
It’s good to see Halladay get some recognition, but you could make an argument he could have finished even higher; the next closest pitcher in the vote standings was Adam Wainwright who placed 19th. Halladay’s performance this season was MVP-worth on so many levels. He kept his team in countless games throughout the year and could have finished with more than 21 wins had his offense not let him down.
The writers got it right with Votto taking home the award, but certainly Halladay could have finished in a better spot.

hard to argue with Votto. although I actually thought Carlos Gonzalez was the best player in the NL this year.

Wow Andrew… the first thing you do is complain that Ryan Howard got a second place vote and throw in a comment about his contract. It must be a sad existence alone under that rock…
Votto deserved the award – Tulo probably took votes away from CarGo (and vice versa); those two were a two headed monster like baseball has never seen before down the stretch. For what it’s worth, Halladay finished tied second in WAR overall (tied with Jimenez) behind only Albert Pujols. Votto finished 5th in WAR overall.

No other clean up hitter
EVER
had 0 rbi in 6 game series
Because no other team could EVER get to a game 6 with 0 RBI
But you climb out of that rock and keep defending the contract
Its what you do

Hes the bestest
Certainly better than low lifes like Adam Dunn and Adrain Gonzalez who make half what he does.
But hey you guys keep making him the bestest
He should have been MVP of the league and the playoffs
I will never get the people who are driven to defend athletes like they are their children.
Dont let facts or truth get in the way.
Hes great and the contract is too low

One more thing
You cry babies who cry when anyone says a bad word about the 25 million dollar man
You better buck up
This is the tip of a big iceberg
Settle in and get used to it.
And stop crying when people point out hes the most over paid player in MLB
wah wah

I think we are the only team with 4 guys on this list. We could have had more because we have more players that are capable of getting MVP votes- Utley, Rollins, Lidge.

Glad to see Chooch get some votes, well deserved.
Andrew, could you please get off the fence on how you feel about Howard? I mean, for crying out loud, take a stand man! (:

I’m glad Votto won it!
And I told you guys that Werth would finish in the Top 10… Can’t believe people wanted to run him out of town midseason!

Well, Andrew sounds like he’s about 13. Sounds like a hypocrite, too. “I don’t get people who defend athletes…”, turn that around, and look in the mirror. You sound like a baby and nobody really cares or is defending Ryan Howard. Either way, he’s a fantastic player, and will continue to be one for many years to come. Quit your whining.
On topic, I’m very happy that Ruiz, Halladay, Werth, and Howard all made the list. Each deserved it. It’s been a while since a pitcher won the MVP, but I’d definitely agree with the consideration each got. Ruiz was an expert with the staff, Werth was durable and steady in RF (despite his avg with RISP), Howard still put up great numbers, despite missing about a month, and Halladay was what we expected him to be, and more. All-in-all, it was a great year for the Phillies Players. Disappointing end, but remarkable year.

What does chase utley have to do?
Four straight years as a better player than Howard. Four straight years finishing behind him in MVP voting.

I do not have any problem with those that say Howard is a fantastic player and put up great numbers this past season but no doubt what sours many posters and fans was his unproductive post-season so far as RBIs go (great playoff BA but did not knock any runs in) his shaky play in the field at first and all of his striking out during this past season. His big money extended contract adds to it.

Wow. I haven’t been here for a few weeks and Andrew sounds like a completely different poster.
Don’t blame the man for taking the offer. If you have such a problem, blame the front office that gave it to him.

@ Greg – lets deal with Andrew, he has not changed much and frankly, his dissappointment with Ryan Howard is within the scope of understanding (although it does lean towards annoying after a while). To me Howard just looked lost at the plate this year and certainly did not look anything like the superstud we hoped was signed. The propensity to watch the good pitches go by and swing badly at bad pitches and even when he did make contact, where was the power? He was just lost this year, I sure hope he was not happy with his performance.
But Andrew definitely has made some very astute points and other than his favor for replacing Howard with Adam Dunn (gag me), I enjoy listening to him and would probably enjoy hoisting a couple while we talk Phillies.
Regarding giving a pitcher the MVP award, yeah – I think 2 things have to be set up for this to happen. 1) Great year by that pitcher (which Halladay’s season qualified) and 2) No outstanding hitting performances. Votto was probably the most deserving as he was also pretty consistent this year.

Let me clarify my position on Howard as I am not a hater – I have gone to the games since he came into the league – I have watched as he addressed problem after problem with his defense (still working) and his offense (getting his average back up). I think if he did not sign with the Phils for that kind of money he would be somewhere else with that same money (if not more) – its just the market now. I love Ryan Howard, man I hope he does not let this past season or that last at bat stay with him… Perhaps he needs a dose of that same ‘manly potion’ that Cole used last year? Perhaps he needs to put the baby fat back on?
I hope (here we go again) the best is yet to come with Ryno and Chase – if so, we have more good times ahead of us.

I’m gonna laugh my a$$ off when Ryan Howard helps the Phillies win several more divisions, a pennant or two and another World Series in the next 5 years…
…cause…you know….highly paid athletes with big contracts don’t do sh*t….ever.

If he hooks back into his power supply Chuck, I can forsee at least 1 more MVP award coming his/our way. But that too depends on the battery around him – Chase, Jroll, Vic, Poly – if they get on base he should be the one knocking them in!

I just think that people need to back off and not worry so much about contracts… be a fan and until he actually gives us reason to think he won’t be productive (a larger sample than one month when he was injured), let’s be supportive. I’m not saying that you can’t be critical; everyone is entitled to their own opinion but in case you haven’t noticed, Ryan Howard has contributed a lot over the course of his short career… he’s given us a lot to cheer about and has done everything the right way. I’m sorry but Ryan Howard deserves more credit than guys like Andrew are willing to give him. You would think that the wheels were falling off listening to Andrew – we won more games during the regular season this year than any other team in baseball and Howard was one of the most productive players on our team this season. Why did he earn MVP votes? Because we were the best team in the NL over the course of the regular season and statistically he was one of the best players on our team.

You’re right. Ryan Howard doesn’t have a track record of insane production. He’s been a huge bust since his callup from the minors.
