The Phillies got three solid innings from Michael Stutes in the 6-3 win over the Minnesota Twins in Ft. Myers today. Stutes did not give up a hit and struck out one while walking one.

-Danys Baez got the win and pitched another hitless inning he hasn’t given up a run all spring.

-Delwyn Young continues his hot hitting, smacking a three-run home run. He looks to be in the lead for the final bench spot.

-Josh Barfield also continues to rake. He went 2-for-4 and is not 9-for-19 this spring. Barfield led off and played third base.

-Wilson Valdez haters, sorry: He went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and is hitting .517 this spring. The super utility player is at it again.

Hey, I don’t think it’s hating Wilson Valdez to point out that he’s not an every day player of All Star capability. I respect what he did for us last year. But he does not equal Jimmy Rollins or Chase Utley ever. I’m thankful he’s solid. Glad he’s there. Hope his bat gets hot. But he’s a 7 or 8 hole hitter. We need solid hitters in the 1,3, and 5, hole. Howard deserves being protected with great hitters.

Howard won’t even see a fastball in the strike zone if we don’t have decent 3 and 5 hole hitters around him.

    Just sayin’ …….

I don’t think anyone on here ever said that Valdez is “an every day player of All Star capability.” Or that he “equals Jimmy Rollins or Chase Utley ever”

But the dude’s really not getting the proper respect or credit for what he did for this team last season. I guess most people EXPECT ALL STARS at every position and every level.

So here’s the question…..D Young or J Barfield for that final roster spot?? Both are impressing me, but I guess that Young would have the edge as of now.

Valdez certainly belongs on the roster, AND I’d start him in a second should J Rolled falter at all. Phillies Nation: what’s the take on WV at 3rd or 2nd base?
