Blanton Goes to the DL with Right Elbow Injury

Joe Blanton has been sent to the disabled list with a right elbow injury, according multiple sources. He has a medial impingement of the elbow. Vance Worley has been recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley and will make the start tomorrow against the Mets at 7:05.

Worley is 2-2 with a 2.78 ERA, 9.9 K/9 and 2.4 BB/9 in four starts for the Iron Pigs. Sad news for Blanton, who had finally come into his own over the past two games, throwing quality outings against both the Brewers in Padres. He went seven innings, allowing only two runs in each start.

He becomes the latest Phillie on the DL joining Chase Utley, Brad Lidge, Dom Brown, JC Romero, and Jose Contreras. No word yet on Carlos Ruiz, who felt back pain after his first at-bat in Arizona on Wednesday. Hopefully it’s better news and he won’t become the sixth player to hit the DL this year.

Any word on a replacement or backup for Schneider?

Sucks to see Joey B headed to the DL, but 2 things about this give me some hope:

    (1) Vance Worley is solid, and I was hoping he’d get to make a start this season under better circumstances (maybe a double header), so at least he was the guy we were fortunate enough to go to in Blanton’s absence; and

    (2) Blanton’s DL trip is only 15 days, and retroactive, so it will initially be quite short. If we’re lucky, he may only miss this one start, and I think maybe another. Of course, if the final diagnosis is much worse, that optimism vanishes, but until then, one can only hope.

We have seen Worley very little, too soon to say what he is but hope is good.
Frankly, I don’t mind that some of our pitchers are not in the lineup now. Resting up for September.

Dave Sardinha and Erik Kratz are the two internal options out of Lehigh Valley. Neither are especially good, but Sardinha has way more major league experience, so if I had to guess, I’d say him.

I’m excited to see Worley get the call up… not rushing to pick him up on my fantasy team but I think that he’s got it in him to be a solid starter and he’s been really good since the midway point of last season. I also think that he’ll benefit from working alongside Halladay and Lee. Worley doesn’t have electric stuff but he’s good enough to be effective as a #4/5 starter. He’s got a couple of good pitches and a couple that could use improvement. With some tutelage, maybe he’ll improve those other pitches… if you’ve got four or five above average pitches, you can stick in this league.
