Philadelphia Phillies (15-8) at Arizona Diamondbacks (10-12)

Cole Hamels (2-1, 2.92 ERA) vs. Joe Saunders (0-2, 4.98 ERA)

Here we go again. Looking like last seasons slumping lineup, the Phils have managed five runs in two games. Their streak of futility was snapped – they’d gone 14 straight without scoring more than four runs thanks to Ben Francisco’s ninth-inning homer – however, they still could not get themselves a victory.

Avoidance of a sweep rests on the shoulders of Cole Hamels, who has been very, very good since being booed in his first start. He probably remembers those things and wants you to eat your boos. Hamels will need to be on point once again as this Diamondbacks lineup has been quite good in the first two games of the series. But really, we all know it’s not about Hamels. It’s about this damn offense waking up and going on some sort of a tear.

Maybe not even a tear; perhaps just a steady clip of five runs a game for a short while, to at least serve as a reprieve from what has been an ugly two weeks. Sure, the Phillies are 15-8. That’s not making it any easier.

Joe Saunders will fire for Arizona, another starter with an ERA around five heading into action. It didn’t matter for Ian Kennedy or Daniel Hudson, both of whom won in their starts against the Phillies despite an ugly stat line. If the Phillies keep swinging like they have as of late, it won’t matter for Saunders either.

John Mayberry is in there today, Raul Ibanez will sit as he deals with an 0-for-22 slump.

LINEUP: Victorino CF, Polanco 3B, Rollins SS, Howard 1B, Francisco RF, Mayberry LF, Ruiz C, Valdez 2B, Hamels P

Grand Slam Baseball BeerYour gameday beer: Modelo

It’s not that pricey and it tastes fairly decent. I want you to have a taste to see what all the rave is about (is there rave about it?). Modelo is a Mexican cerveza that’s similar to Corona. It won’t wow you, but it is damn refreshing. Had one on Saturday, which turned into 8 quickly. They go down smooth. Be careful. Have some fish tacos and enjoy the game – by Pat

Apparently there are tornados near little Roys home in Mississippi,

    Worry about Ruiz.

    Trust me worry about that

Nice to see the offense waking the hell up today.

J-Roll and Vic w/ HRs already, and a few RBIs.

I want to know what’s up w/ Ruiz being pulled though. I mean, yeah, he’s been cold at the plate, but he was in for the top of the first inning, and then never went to position in the bottom. I assumed he didn’t play last night so he’d be fresh for today. Oh well.

    Bad back
Not a good thing considering he is defensively equal to Johnny Bench and the team MVP in 08, 09 , and 10

    The Marlins did lose today.

Bummer. I guess if he isn’t going to the DL though it can’t be that bad. Plus, Schneider has been hitting well, so a few more starts for him while Ruiz gets a little more rest wouldn’t be the worst thing that could happen.

Also, the stuff they’re saying about Brown is pretty damned encouraging. I know it’s not real in-game ABs, but 5-for-5 w/ 2 HRs in his extended Spring training game yesterday, and 2-for-4 w/ another HR today w/ the Threshers. Please for the love of god, let this mean he’s getting his swing.

Its nice but I dont care what he does 2-3 weeks down there.
He is not a proven major leaguer and this is spring training basicly for him
    Id lean towards 3 weeks

    Chris young another homer.

Ibanez 0 for his last 27.
Yes hes a major league player
He may hit 3 homers tomorrow and one being the game winner.

But it doesnt change things mush in my opinion.

At some point its just over. Was for Ruth, Ted Williams and Schmidt so it will be for him too.

Let’s pray he pulls a Ruth or a Schmidt and, realizing he’s doing more harm to his team than good, retires randomly mid-season before things can get any uglier.

I mean, as the “Bumblers on the Corners” article explained, Raul presently has a -1.0WAR. NEGATIVE 1!! When the indisputable stats, not popular opinion, show that you’re truly taking away from your team’s ability to win, it’s time to call it a career.
