New York Mets (11-14) at Philadelphia Phillies (16-8)

Mike Pelfrey, RHP (1-2, 7.23 ERA) vs. Vance Worley, RHP (0-0, 0.00 ERA)

The Mets are back in town for a three game series against a Phillies team who just keep adding names to the disabled list.  Latest resident is Joe Blanton.  He joins Chase Utley, Domonic Brown, Brad Lidge, Jose Contreras and J.C. Romero on the growing list of ailing Phils.  Carlos Ruiz is there too with some lower back pain.

The Phillies called up Vance Worley from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to fill in.  Last season he was 0-1 with a 1.80 ERA in two starts for the Phillies.  This season for the Iron Pigs he is 2-2 with a 2.78 ERA in four starts.

Worley is one of those kids from the ‘straight brim crew.’  Guys like Drew Storen of the Nationals and Joba Chamberlain of the Yankees that are young and hungry.  The 24 year-old right handed pitcher is striking out 9.9 batters per nine innings.

The last time the Mets were in town, the Phillies took two out of three from New York.  Tonight they will be facing off against right hander Mike Pelfrey.  Pelfrey is 6-4 with an ERA over five against Philadelphia.  Ryan Howard has had the most success against Pelfrey hitting .406 with two home runs.

After winning the series finale in Arizona the Phillies offense will look to continue to heat up.  Placido Polanco has 10 hits in his last 20 at bats and Ben Francisco has six RBIs in his last seven games.

Brian Schneider will get the start again filling in for Ruiz, who is suffering from back pain.  Dane Sardinha was recalled earlier today to be the third catcher in case something happens to Schneider.  Instead of sending Ruiz to the DL, they decided to send Mike Zagurski back down to the minors.

The Nation’s Pat Gallen is down at CBP and here are some things he is hearing:

On Blanton – Felt a burn when he tossed changeups; that’s what took him out of the last game.  After that it didn’t really get any better.  Amaro and Manuel say they hope to have him back sooner than later.  More or less, he just needs rest.

On Worley – Charlie says if he can get 5-7 innings from the youngster, it will be perfect.

On Ruiz – No DL yet, going to give him 2-3 days rest and see where he is then.  Sardinha was called up in case the DL is needed.

LINEUP: Victorino CF, Polanco 3B, J Roll SS, Howard 1B, Francisco RF, Ibanez LF, Orr 2B, Schneider C, Worley P

Fire Island's Red Wagon IPAYour Gameday Beer – Fire Island’s Red Wagon IPA

Tonight’s selection comes to us from Fire Island, NY, that crazy place off Long Island where cars are prohibited. And it is this quirky phenomenon that give us the name of the beer since red wagons are what locals use to transport goods around the island. Ah, simple times call for a simple beer. This golden beer is balanced with floral and fruity hops and is perfect for a September evening. Have it with some grilled pork chops.
GO PHILLIES!

The Mets have won 7 of 8. And Pelfrey was thier opening day starter.
Still this rivalry is about as dead as Edison vs Tesla.

Don’t sleep on them Andy. This isn’t going to be an easy series.

Oh no. I was just saying there is no hype anymore.
I could see them winning the series.
I certainly as a betting man would bet on the Mets in tonights game in particular.
But I do not bet on baseball

I think we might see some ugly baseball this weekend.

    Good news.
I have access to the Phillies feed tonight.
Keith Hernandez is like fingernails on a chalk board for me.
And I dont have to get through 3 hours of the Mets broadcasters talking about what a bandbox the Phillies park is.

You’re definitely not kidding about Joba Chamberlain being hungry. I don’t think that guy has ever met a buffet he couldn’t empty.

At least Worley seems poised out there

Those errors were fairly ridiculous. As were the 4 at bats, each ending on the second pitch.

That’s the first base runner that Worley was responsible for. The other two got on base from errors.

Why do the bad or missed calls always seem to go agains tthe Phils?
Umps gonna squeez Vance now I guess

I wonder if the Phils will turn Pelfrey into Cy Pelfrey tonight.
    Chances are good

I guess the umpire’s union doesn’t provide for vision benefits.

  • Posts: 0 Andrew from waldorf

The one really obviously one was jsut a missed call
Between the strike zone and the errors
Worley isnt going past the 5th or 6th
Get ready Herndon. I guess Zagurski is gone

@Andrew: yes, they sent Zagurski down so they could bring up Sardhina to back up Schneider.

OK, if the newbie pitcher can get a hit with 1 out, the least we can do is bring him home!

And by the way: all of them were looking. Ya think that’s because the ump doesn’t know where the strike zone is?

Pelfrey really sums up the Mess of the last 4 years. Or was it Oli Perez?
Or Reyes? who is finaly playing decent because hes in a contract year

That was a bomb by howard.

I feel bad for Raul and would love to see him get hot.

Worley is doing really well and all, but Mike Pelfrey, you know you’re having a rough night when a kid who comes up from AAA as a last minute replacement for your opponent’s 5th starter outlasts you.

Its painful with Ibanez. the old man should show some mercy.

Even when the rest of the team hits he isnt.
He is such a good guy this is just painful to watch.

I want to be positive. I think sit him for a week and come back and see what happens.

Just got here, I see that Worley has 99 pitches and Dubees coming out, how has Worley looked overall?

    • Posts: 0 Andrew from waldorf

Great a couple of key DPs including one in an inning the phils had 2 errors.
But it is still the Mets

I thought he was mostly solid. Had some control issues here and there, so he walked a few, and he let more fly balls go then I’m sure Dubee would have preferred, but at the end of the day he tossed 6 shutout innings, so who can complain?

Just finished reading the thread from earlier today. Andrew was right folks, Werth’s status as a former playoff tested winner as a Phillie had a lot to do with the Nationals giving him a large payday.

Their plan was to give him that contract, hoping to then lure someone like Greinke or Lee. They thought that they had to show that they were both willing to spend the money and serious about becoming a winner. It didn’t work- yet, but it probably will and there are more good FA pitchers coming up next year.

I think ithe Werth deal will do long term damage to the Nats.
Also unless he changes his delivery Strassburg is destined to be Mark Prior.
Only with less big league success.

As for me being right even a blind squirrel finds the occasional acorn. :)
