2011 Gameday, Posts
Philadelphia Phillies (7-3) at Washington Nationals (5-5)
Roy Halladay RHP (1-0, 0.69 ERA) vs. John Lannan LHP (1-0, 3.60 ERA)
Time: 7:05, Nationals Park
Weather: Cloudy, 55
TV: CSN, MASN2 (VA viewers)
Twitter: Phillies Nation
It feels like Opening Day 2010 all over again doesn’t it? Roy Halladay is on the mound against John Lannan in early April. And expectations for the Phillies are extremely high while for Nats fans they get to see one of the best right handed pitchers throw the ball. It’s an even trade off really.
To understand the dominance Halladay has had over the Nationals, think of an adult lion stalking a wounded zebra. Yeah, it’s not fair. Against Washington, Halladay is 8-1 with a 1.96 ERA for his career and has a seven start win streak against them. In 2010 he started three times against the Nats, winning all three, and posted a 0.39 ERA in those games. This year Doc is 1-0 with 0.69 ERA in two starts. He has 13 K’s in 13 innings pitched this season.
On the other end of the spectrum is Lannan. He is winless against the Phillies going 0-8 with a 6.09 ERA. This season he hasn’t been horrible in two starts. He is 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA in two starts. Lannan has seven strikeout and three walks in 10 innings thus far.
Raul Ibanez loves it when he sees Lannan’s name on the score card. He has 10 hits, two homeruns, and is hitting .667 against the lefty. Ryan Howard, however, has not been so lucky. He is hitting a dismal .185 with 11 strikeouts against Lannan.
The Phillies have three losses on the season. All three losses have come in the first game of each series they have lost a game in. They have won three straight series to start the season and need to win tonight to ensure that streak stays alive with a win tomorrow as well.
Lineup: Victorino CF, Polanco 3B, Rollins SS, Howard 1B, Francisco RF, Ibanez LF, Ruiz C, Valdez 2B, Halladay P
Your Gameday Beer – Whirlwind Witbier
Tonight we have a gentle offering by Victory. This classic German Witbier is supremely drinkable on any evening, especially a rainy one like today. The flavor is comprised by wheat malt and yeast with notes of orange zest, coriander, and clove. Essentially, it’s another more sophisticated version of Blue Moon, if you fancy those. If you can find some fresh shellfish, like a bushel of crabs, have that with it. – By Brian
GO PHILLIES! This one is for you Harry.

Low scoring game tonight, hopefully the Phils can pull it out.

I wonder why John Mayberry is not in the lineup. He’s right handed, a better fielder than Ibanez and could give the lowest hitting starter (Ibanez) a day off. Charlie, what are you thinking? Let’s let the young right handed outfielder play !!!!

Wondering the same. Why not give this guy a start on occasion. It’s no platoon role, but at some point Mayberry has to show what he can do for a whole game, right?

Well, doesn’t Kieran note that Raul is hitting .667 against Lannan with 10 hits and 2 homeruns. Gotta respect the stats I guess…

I”m not saying tonight, I just mean in general. I’d like to see what the kid can do at the plate and in the field. I guess Charlie doesn’t wanna mess with whats working.

Agreed. The kid has promise. Seems like he really has trouble with the breaking ball, though. Livan made him look silly last night.

Rauuuuul. I love the look on Lannons face when he looks back and sees the balls go bye-bye. This ones for Harry K. I say 12-1 phills

I had forgotten that today was the anniversary of Harry’s death. Weird that they’re in DC on that day again.

How many times will you see Poly hitting into a DP?

MLB has a replay of the barehanded play that Poly made earlier. What a grab, what a throw!
Very impressive!

Werth is 0-for-3 tonight. I don’t wish him any ill will, but there was just too much discussion of the “harm he did to his former team” last night; good to nip that in the bud.

I dont understand why when Lannan left we did not see Mayberry. Raul is having an aweful game tonight. Hopefully, Cholly will be giving him a rest tomorrow.

There goes the shutout, but I’m still not worried. Halladay is running out of a little steam, but the plate ump has a lousy strike zone (if any), and he’s throwing a lot of unnecessary pitches.

123 pitches for Roy in april. The old man is a charachter. I guess Roy wanted to be in there and wouldnt come out. But lets save some for october and november.
A wins a win though

Roy had the anchor out. He was either going to finish off that inning or shank the Nats on the basepaths to make sure they didnt score.

Sometimes Old Cholly sticks with his players tooooo long. Tonight, he showed his confidence in his great right hander. And his confidence won out. I am sure Roy H is pleased with Cholly’s confidence in him. Fun game. Our offense is starting to give me a few worries, but I am a worry wort. Let’s hope Mr. Lee is firing on all cylinders tomorrow.

@ Brooks,
Change of plans. Have to work tomorrow evening, would miss the first 4 or 5 innings, decided to go see Doc tonight instead.
