Buster Olney on Possible Phillies Trades

Buster Olney of ESPN reported at 2:30pm Monday afternoon that the Phillies have already begun trade talks for a righthanded hitting outfielder. The two offerings he made were Josh Willingham and Michael Cuddyer.

Over at Brotherly Glove, Eric and I have discussed possible outfield solutions for the Phils a good amount, concluding that Hunter Pence would be the best player to trade for, while players of the Cuddyer mold are considerably less attractive. Cuddyer makes $11MM this season and would not be a part of the Phillies’ future even if traded here. The Phils, ideally, should obtain more than a rental.

His redeeming quality is his ability to hit lefthanded pitching – he has a 1.139 OPS vs. southpaws this year and a .902 mark the last three. He plays poor defense, however.

Willingham would be a nice get. He is considerably cheaper ($6MM in 2011,) and will almost definitely be moved by a fast-fading Athletics team. If the Phillies were to acquire Willingham at the All-Star Break, they would only be on the hook for two million dollars, provided the As don’t pick up any of that salary. Willingham and Cuddyer are similar in many ways. Willingham holds the plate discipline advantage while Cuddyer has been better against opposite-handed pitching this season. Willingham costs half the price, making him all the more enticing.

MLB Trade Rumors lists as possibilities Jeff Francoeur, Matt Diaz and Marcus Thames. I don’t know if the Phils would even sign Thames if he were released by the Dodgers tomorrow. While I’d love to have Diaz, the fact that the Phils could have had both he and Francoeur this past offseason and chose not to sign them tells you that the organization is not in love with either.

Olney’s comment comes at a strange time. It was based on information from sources within other organizations, and there is no guarantee that these “inquiries” made by the Phillies are recent. They could have come a month ago, before Domonic Brown played his way into the lineup and Raul Ibanez proved he was more than a corpse.

The Phillies are not in dire need of a stop-gap outfielder. If the cost is minimal, it would be worth it, because there is no problem with plugging small holes. But to pay Cuddyer $4 or $5 million or to part with intriguing prospects is probably unnecessary at this time. Pence naturally remains the best option, but that possibility is looking more and more far-fetched given the Astros’ ownership change and Pence’s career year.

Unless a move has an extremely high probability of being worthwhile — either financially or in terms of added production — an old team that is already spending a ton of money needn’t pull the trigger at this time.

An old team? Stop. Its one thing to be old and tied into long term contracts with the old guys. We’re not. Ibanez, Rollins, Oswalt, Lidge are all up after this year. Polanco after next year. Nothing wrong with renting an old guy for the rest of the year. Cuddyer probably won’t cost big prospects because he’s not having a good year. Willingham is OK but not worth a good prospect. Pence would be a nice pickup. I like Michael Bourn also. I am glad the Phils are starting to acknowledge that LF is the spot for improvement and that they are at least asking around (if you believe Buster Olney). When Peter Gammons or Jayson Stark report something lemme know.

The Phillies are an old team…is that really even debatable? Of the four players you mentioned, the only one who probably won’t be back is Ibanez. Lidge could be back depending on what happens with Madson, Oswalt could be back depending on if he wants to be, and Jimmy is going nowhere.

Regardless, the Phillies ARE an old team. If you replace Ibanez with Cuddyer you’re replacing a 39-year-old with a 33-year-old who, like Ibanez, cannot run or play defense. Players like Cuddyer and Willingham are not going to be a part of the Phillies future. They’d be half-season rentals. I questioned whether or not it is worth it to spend precious extra dollars or intriguing prospects on guys who contribute nothing to the future and not a whole lot to the present.

I was looking at this earlier . . . and Willingham is nothing special, he’s the type of move the 2005 Phillies would make at the deadline. His career numbers aren’t better than Ibanez – and if you’re only going to platoon him, is he definitely better than Francisco in that same role? Worth giving up prospects for?

I think Cuddyer hitting 5th, playing LF against LHP is as good an upgrade as we can get this year …. I’ve been calling for him since the preseason, and would love to see him hit at CBP regularly

Hey Don, don’t jump on my pick! Unless he was yours too. I’ve been all over this guy since last season for the Phils to get. You know he plays 3rd and RF, too? I’d give up Rizzoto and Kendrick for him I guess.

Excuse me. 1st base. I was thinking of Michael Young.

I can’t imagine that any team has interest in Kendrick?… or Blanton…

This goes directly to my stance earlier about trading Worley when his value was high

Maybe not Kendrick but i would assume a team would like to pick up Blanton (before his injury) an a Phils prospect. Pence would be nice but i dont see that happening.

what about Blanton, after his injury? I don’t think he holds any value at all right now

I don’t think that anyone will really want Blanton anytime soon, if at all, this year because of his price tag. I think that as the Twins get farther into the season, they might appreciate getting rid of some money, hence, perhaps a team picking up Cuddyer’s contract, and not what they’re getting back, may be the primary motivation.

I am happy the Phils are talking about getting a right handed bat. Also, I hope they are bullish on Hunter Pence. Frankly, I would welcome Willingham or Cuddyer. or Francoeur.
    ..
But if you are going to take a shot at someone, go for Pence. ANd the Phils should go hard for this deal. I would be satisfied (not thrilled) with Willingham or Cuddyer. . I would be placated with the other names mentioned.

Hopefully the Phillies Management is focused on keeping ME a happy camper.

Blah..blah..blah… same old rumors. Unindentified, unofficial, unauthenticated, etc. And as Mr. Seidman suggested, this rumor could have been circulated a month ago..prior to Brown being called up to stay..and.. Ibanez’s revitalized hitting with a BA over .300 since May 3rd (ending his 0 for 35 slump).

Oh, in the meantime, The Phillies have all their regulars healthy again and playing together for the first time this season. With Utley in the lineup, is it coincidental that the offense is coming to life? Isn’t it nice to see our team having the best record in baseball (40-26) ? Clap ya’ hands Phillies fans! (smiling)

No more mortgaging the future for rentals, I completely agree with Corey’s stance.

    My take-

Watch the waiver wire after July 31st for an underperforming hidden gem that could come to life in a new environment.

Just like the Giants did last year with Ross. It’s true, they lucked out. They didn’t really want him, but they claimed him to block the Padres from taking him when the Pads outfield became thin due to injury. So they got him for virtually nothing, and they wouldn’t have won anything without him.

Would I rather be lucky than good?, no- I’d rather do both.

  • I really do not get it, if you get a rh bat it would be to platoon with everyones golden boy Dom Brown and his 230 BA Raul his the LF for this year and you can worry about next year this off season. Lidge will not be back in Philly if anywhere with his injury history, Raul will be gone, JRoll will be back. So you have Raul and Lidges money to spend on a LFer. And i would almost think JRoll will be 8-10 million for 3 years. I really do not think they need to trade any prospects for rental bat that can not play defense. Mayberry has proven he can come off the bench and hit and has shown he is probably the best defensive outfileder we have. I think Ben will be sent down eventually and Mayberry will be back and platoon with Dom Brown. Come playoffs if the Phillies make it Martenez does not have to be on the Playoff roster, so that will be a spot for Mayberry. Really trade talk in the middle of June with the best record in the Majors, and a 21/2 game lead in the east over a team that has won 10 out of 11 and what 9 in a row. RELAX this team is built to win now and in the post season

      thru 95 games, in parts of 3 MLB seasons… Mayberry is a .231 hitter, with a .300 OBP, .343 SLG%, and a .734 OPS

ALL of those numbers are less than Francisco’s career averages:
      Ben Fran= .258 avg, .331 OBP, .436 SLG, .767 OPS

So while neither is anything amazing.. I definitely don’t think anyone can make the argument that “Mayberry has proven he can come off the bench and hit”

If we’re going platoon and playing them strictly vs LHP, then Mayberry has a slight-edge over Francisco, but overall Ben can do more at the plate

Beta, can never hurt to get better. Platooning Willingham with Raul is a great idea, or with Dom Brown if he needs a blow. I don’t see anything wrong with it – he’d only be paid about $3 mil the rest of the way.

Mayberry can field but he cant hit at least not yet. I believe that he may just be a back up type of guy at this time I was looking at a replacement for a few years. Raul will be gone so that would leave Shane as the only (current) everyday starter for the outfield. Dom Brown will continue to be bought along and most likely will assume an everyday starting role next year. That still leaves us with one missing outfielder. Why not get him now when he can possibly help us in the Post Season. Specifically with out best threat off the bench is playing injured. At the end of the off season they can possibly unload Ben Fran an possibly Blanton.

  • I am not saying if you can get a rent a player for cheap without giving up anything in return from our minor league system. I just do think we need to slightly improve by giving up some of the young talent.
