2011 Gameday, News, Posts
Chicago Cubs (25-36) at Philadelphia Phillies (37-26)
Carlos Zambrano (5-2, 3.98 ERA) vs. Roy Halladay (8-3, 2.56 ERA)
Time: 7:05, Citizens Bank Park
Weather: Cloudy, 84
TV: Comcast SportsNet/MLB Network
Media: Twitter and Facebook
Charlie Manuel is as desperate as a housewife. He’s willing to do whatever to get this team out of its offensive funk. Manuel will put Placido Polanco fifth tonight to shake things up a bit.
I don’t have a problem with that. Nothing else is working, so putting your best bat in a run-producing position can’t hurt. Let’s hope Polly gets a few opportunities to score some of his guys tonight, with Victorino moving up to #2.
Halladay vs. Zambrano, two of the better competitors on the mound tonight. The only difference is, Halladay is as sweet as a nun off the field, while Zambrano’s antics remind you of MIke Tyson a little bit.
Bold prediction: The Phillies score 5 runs tonight. Not asking too much, lets start low and work our way up.
PHILLIES LINEUP:
Rollins SS, Victorino CF, Utley 2B, Howard 1B, Polanco 3B, Ibanez LF, Brown RF, Ruiz C, Halladay P
Your Gameday Beer: Yards Saison
Not too heavy, not too light, just perfect for this beautiful night. I’m like Shakespear, baby! I’m a big fan of Yards Saison, a Belgian-style ale. It’s not as unfilerty (not a word) as Blue Moon or Hoegaarden. I actually think the taste is a notch above those two mainstream beers. It’s a tasty brew from our boys on Delaware ave. – By Pat

No. No. McCarthy just referred to the plural of RBIs as “RBI”. No. Violation! Its 112 RBIs, not 112 RBI. Good god. If I have to hear him say that for the rest of his career I’m turning on the effin radio. I still haven’t gotten used to “Walk Off Homer” its still a “game winning homer” as far as I’m concerned. Why do we need to screw with the vernacular of the game? Just leave well enough alone, please. Thank you.

@Dipsy: (scratching head) I’m not sure why you object to the term “walk-off.” I think it’s a useful part of baseball terminology, identifying a hit in the bottom of the 9th inning that puts the home team ahead, ending the game regardless of how many outs have been charged in that inning. The term “game winning homer” does not fully convey that. A “game winning homer” could occur in any inning, as long as it puts the winning team ahead of the highest score the losing team achieves.

I always say RBIs
People got cute with the RBI crap a while ago. Always annoyed me
I am not saying runs batted ins I am saying RBIs
Jimmy did a good job on the run down and Zambrano did a poor job.
Zambrano is always ready to lose it.
and has an ERA over 4 now

@Tracey. No one gave a damn 20 years ago about a guy who hit a homer in the fifth inning that ended up being the winning rbi. They would say, “nice homer, dude”. A “game winning HR or RBI” always happened in the 8th or 9th inning until we started micromanaging statistics. Everyone knew what you meant by the latter and no one cared about the former. Until they started caring. And changing sh*t around.

Funny to hear Wheeler talk about the old days and the leather helmuts and when it took 5 balls to get a walk.
I wonder if wheeler ever called any of the Philadelphia As games

Joba Chamberlain to get Tommy John surgery.
Remember they had the Joba Rules and babied him.
Like they did Hughes and the Senators did Strasburg.
etc etc etc and on and on to many to name
Seems to me when pitchers werent babied they didnt break down so much.
Seems the more they baby them the weaker they are.

Wheeler’s the worst. THE WORST. He’s never cracked a joke in his life nor ever understood one. He got a job with the Phils by being the kid that watched the money at Bill Giles’ McDonald’s Backyard Fairs. He’s a total nerd and I heard he wears a cup and jock strapin the booth. To go with his rug.

You have to try to laugh at how goofy he is
The hair
The saying scalding every night
Mccarthy said scalding a few days ago and I just laughed.
Pat did you get food at Sarges pig roast?
theres 3 hits !
way to go Ruiz

3 hits through 4
Since the rules committee only allows the Phillies 5 hits in a game ( 6 if it goes 11 innings or more)
I really hope they make thier last 2 hits count

I’m past laughing. Its embarrassing. He’s such a dope. What baseball god did Phils fans offend to be sentenced to an eternity with Chris Wheeler. He makes me pine for Andy Musser. Richie used to do two things: make fun of him or totally ignore him. If he and I were the the only two people waiting for the bus, I honestly wouldn’t speak to him. I would tug on his hair though. Point to his chest and say “hey, whats that?” and then go aiiiirrrt with the finger in his nose……….

We are stuck on three runs forever. AMAZING
Jason Stark was on the fanatic today
Here is what he said. Rollins wants 3 years and the phillies want to give him 2. No way would I sign him to 3. He is done.
Hamels will want Lee money and they will most likely pay it. He said Gilick said yesterday they gave lee 5 years because most pitchers are not Lee. Hamels is better. 3 pitchers making over 20 million. Never been done before…
On last nights game. Stark said KK should of comeback out and pitch. He said Manuel knew he was short in the pen. He said these players can stay loose in the cage. It was only a 1 hour delay. Get two more innings from him. If god forbid he got hurt who cares. He is terrible. Dutch today said players are premadonnas. Larry Anderson said he pitched 2 innings in a double header then came back out later that night and pitched 2 more.

Hes a bad broadcaster
But he is old and feeble enough and goofy enough for me to laugh at
But before I got the baseball package in 2006. I didnt get exposed to him living here in DC
I can see where 20 years would get annoying.

And when I first got the package and heard the guy I couldnt believe someone with that voice and how he presented himself was a paid broadcaster.

Good god Dipsy you sound like an old fart tonight. People evolve, the game evolves, the vernacular evolves.
That said, my pet peeve is this “swinging bunt” bullchit, which is nothing but a weakly hit ball, or what we used to call a topper. A bunt or drag bunt is an intentional action.

Yea your right. they babied Joba and he is DONE. GOODBYE…
5 Reason Shane should leadoff
1. Rollins is past his prime and a poor on base percentage..
2. number of stolen bases have decreased. 47 in 08…31 in 09 and 17 in 10…injuries
3. victorino gets extra base hits better. 5 triples in 39 games.
4. shane has better numbers in every offensive cat.
5. shane is a player that leads by example. plays harder and wants to win.
jimmy is declining.

They started babying pitchers after they started paying them so much. In the old days many pitchers broke down, but they were paying them next to nothing so the owners didn’t care. It was just considered part of the game.
Then the bonus babies like Kerry Wood went down, it was thought that Jim Riggleman and his ilk over used them, and the owners decided it cost too much to pay them while they were out, so they started babying them. Now it’s gone the opposite way, if the ulnar collateral ligament is going to go, it’s going to go no matter how much you baby them. IMO- They need to concentrate more oncorrecting their delivery and pitch speed. Not how much use they get.
Grand Salami!
Gibson and Seaver and Carlton did not need babying.

Conteras being 60 caught up with him
Was impressive what they got out of him before he went on the DL
JC really offers nothing.
You absolutely take Halladay out after 106 up 7-0
You pay these guy to do something.
All that said. Should still get the win

Probably more runs scored then the games he homers in.
