Pittsburgh Pirates (54-51) at Philadelphia Phillies (67-39)

Jeff Karstens (8-5, 2.41 ERA) vs. Vance Worley (7-1, 2.02 ERA)

Time: 1:35, Citizens Bank Park
TV: MyPHL 17
Weather: Mostly Sunny, 92
Media: Twitter and Facebook

The Phillies have a shot at sweeping the Pirates and holding on to a 5-game lead in the NL East over the Braves.

They’ll also look to continue their hot hitting. Ryan Howard was a monster on Saturday, going 4-for-4 with a homer and two doubles. Hunter Pence slipped into the background in his Phillies debut going 1-for-5 with an RBI batting in the 5-hole. Perhaps his inclusion in the lineup is already starting to pay off.

Or, perhaps this offense is just plugging along at its usual summer pace – they love to hit when the weather gets warm.

Today it’s Vance Worley on the mound seeking the sweep against a scrappy Pirates team that is fighting for its life in the NL Central. I think I speak for many when I say I’d love to see the Pirates make the playoffs again, but for this weekend, we want nothing less than three wins for the Fightins.

I didn’t get a chance to put my two cents in over the last few days, but I’m excited to see Pence flourish here. Was it the best move to make? In my opinion, no; but what’s done is done. I’m upset to see the Phillies continue to pick Raul over Domonic, but such is baseball life. Brown will get his.

For now, this is the lineup we’ll see. It is certainly a lineup that is strong enough to win the division, the league, and the World Series.

The Pirates will have a new face on the roster today after acquiring first baseman Derrek Lee from the Baltimore Orioles. No word on if he’ll make it in time for today’s 1:35 start.

Tonight’s Lineup: Rollins SS, Victorino CF, Utley 2B, Howard 1B, Pence RF, Ibanez LF, Schneider C, Martinez 3B, Worley P.

Orval Trappist AleYour Gameday Beer – Coors Light

Tap the Rockies today on this very warm, slightly humid afternoon. I’ve grown to take Coors for what it is, the best of the Big 3. It’s not going to wow you, but it will cool you off and sort of refresh you. On taste alone, St. Bernardus 12, it ain’t. But if you’re at CBP and in need a refresher, you could do worse, I think. It’s Coors, and it won’t kill you. Enjoy the game.  -By Pat

I cant say I would be surprised if he stays hot, I would however be surprised if he is playing next year. I think he sees the end is near. I believe he will play is ARSE off to win that World Series. If the Phillies do win it all, (besides the fact, that I will probably either have a heart attack, or get arrested for streaking LOL) I think Raul will want to go out on top, and retire.

Look at Pete Roses stats in 1980.
Very pedestrian. But make no douubt about it.
He was the reason they won it all the missing ingrediant.

I am pretty sure Pence is the 2011 Pete Rose for the phillies.
His stats dont really measure him at all.

    I usually predict well.

In the playoffs Howard will have to hit. I thnk he will this year.
I like this team. Alot now.

What does NFL PRE-season have anything to do with MLB REGULAR season? You have not made any sense on any post yet today. If you tried to compare Spring Training to NFL Pre-season, I could understand it. No comparison there. again, DUH. And no I dont watch Spring Training.

Did Andrew say that Howard may come around. 3 nights ago you wanted to throw him off the Walt Whitman. I certainly do not question your love for the Phils, but play the role of This team is the best period. This team was the best period 4 days ago, period. I know adding Pence is a nice addition, but they still were the best in baseball without him. You kept saying they were not.

Just want to get this right….. next weekend if the Giants beat us in SF are we back to not good enough to win it all? I know the Pirates are a much improved team and could win the Central, but they are still not an elite team.

Gotta stay with one path, you are kinda all over the place here

Please do not compare Pence to Rose.

Rose was 39 years old and had about 10 All Star apperances and one of the games best players the last 15 years before he came to Philly. Rose was the missing piece cause of his win at all cost mentality.

Pence is a good player and an All Star, but no Rose.

I really don’t think Andrew was trying to “compare” Pence to Rose. I think he was just trying to say, that having a RH bat was that missing ingredient. I don’t disagree. As for his Howard comment. He usually hates on Howard. He often is vocal about Howard. He does seem to be a bit all over the place, but he is correct. Howard needs to hit in the playoffs.

Oh definitely, because Howard is not tied for 4th in the league in Homers, 2nd in the league in RBI’s (by 1 RBI) and top 10 in walks. He also SUCKS in the field, has no endurance at all, and ZERO leadership considering he snd in the league in innings played by NL First Basemen (, and still tied for 4th in Fielding Percentage at .994.). This is all with the most total chances of any First basement with 1016. He does really suck, and has never done anything for the Phillies. Maybe you are right. Maybe we should bench Howard and start Ross Gload at first? That sounds like a GREAT idea. Did you even look at any stats at all prior to posting on here, or do you just like to look like a complete MORON.

        I KNOW THE NUMBERS

Apparantly you don’t know the numbers. Or if you do know the numbers, you dont know that they mean. If you did, you wouldnt want to “WAIVE” him now. I might understand it if you could trade him for Pujols, or maybe Prince Fielder, but other than those two, who else? Those are the only two who have a chance of moving, and I doubt Fielder will move now that they are in the lead for their division. What is your answer? Who do you want to play 1st base and CONSISTANTLY be in the top 5 for RBI’s every season? I have seen some STUPID comments on here, but wow. Today really takes the cake.

I am saying Rose was the missing link that put the 80 team over what hte 3 previous teams could not.
Roses stats were pedestrian. It wasnt his play so much that did it but the intangibles.

    Pence brings that.

I am not comparing the players.

    BTW
2011 Pence is better than a 1980 over the hill rose.

But no way the Phillies win that title without pete.

    Comprehende? Jeff

Rose hit .282 with 1 homer and 64 rbi for the 1980 phillies.

But wthout him they dont win it.

Alot of you dont really read outside the stat lines and the obvious ( Baumann)

Rose added something you cant see in the stats

Pence is more than his stats. And his stats are pretty good.

Gentlemen, you too I believe are trying to get to the same point. Even Jeff said “Rose was the missing piece cause of his win at all cost mentality.” That would be those intangibles considering stat wise, he didnt do much. Pence is a hard nose play hard all the time type of player. Having a player like that around brings some of those intangibles, to sometimes just elevate the play of others around them. Not to mention, Utley also said it, that it says alot to the players that the Front Office realizes that the Phillies have something special here, and will do what they need to to win the World F’in Series again! That in my opinion is another intangible. I think this was more of a misunderstanding where Jeff thought that Andrew was trying to “compare” which I do not believe was the case. Regardless, this team is awesome. The bats are picking it up, the pitching should continue. This could get really messy for the rest of the NL if they continue with this offensem which will just be that much more fun for us right?

And I do not belive this was the best team in baseball 3 days ago and do today.

I also do not think the 1980 Phillies win the world series without Rose.

1 player can mean that much.

…….so was Ted Williams, Carl Yzstremski, Stan Musial, Frank Robinson, Rogers Hornsby, Ty Cobb, Red McNertney, and others. Not saying that Raul is in their league, but these players were old when they had outstanding years, as well.

Okay so not comparing Rose to Pence but saying Pence is the missing piece after 2 games is really hard to fathom.

Don’t get me wrong, I think Pence is great for the Phils, I love the deal it did not cost us what many of you on here were willing to give up for him. He is definitely a great piece to the puzzle, but I will stick with my prior statements This team was a Championship calibur team prior to the trade. You do not have the best record in baseball through the first 4 months of the season without being the best team or in the conversation.

Many were screaming for Pence when we lost 2 out of 3 to the Giants. Just remember that same Giants team lost 3 in a row to the Reds right afterward. The Giants pitched their 1 and 2 and 4 against us and we pitched our 4 2 and 5. The matchup of the 2′s was a toss up game that we happened to lose.

There are a lot of short memories on here. This team went a month and a half without losing a series until the Giants and it was like the world ended and we will not win the WS blah blah throw Howard and Ibanez in the ocean and trade the Brown and Worley for everyone available.

I am just pointing out that as I agree that the trade was a good one and in the small sampling it looks like a smart one, this team was not spiraling out of control nor was it in danger of losing its place in the league.

I know I have not been on the boards responding all summer due to work and family, but I have been reading all the stuff posted and there are many that can be pissed that I say this or that, but I am just reminding many of you how quickly your positive or negative tone for this team changes hourly sometimes.

In the grand scheme of things I want this team to win it all this year and every year. I am also glad RAJ is not sacrifiing the future for it as well and is able to make this team better.

As many of you who know me I have been around since the beginning on here and I live and die with the Phils. So if I act annoyed when some are saying that this team was not going to win it and now they are when they add a good outfielder you hopefully can understand. Cause this team will win it all because the guys who are the heart of this team (Howard, Utley, Rollins, Victorino, Ruiz) hit and drive in runs like they have before. Will Pence help them? yes but so will Polanco who has been out since before the break(remember him career 300 hitter, oh and also right handed)

Anyhow bottomline, Phillies are looking to get more healthy and are looking to have a great rest of the Season!!!

How can you tell that about Pence in 2 games? He played on a dreadful last place team! Maybe after season you could tell that but not yet

  • Posts: 0 Andrew from Waldorf

He will run through a wall like Derek Jeter.
This teams line up was odl and stale.

It is 100% what this team needed.
Not Quentin or Ludwick or a big 40 home run hitter.

Trust me Jeff. I will lead you to the promised land.

I have a feeling this is going to be a nice west coast swing.

Remember Jeff I never once got excited resigning Cliff Lee. Not for one moment.

So I am hardly a guy who goes ga ga for anything fed to me. And I still doubt the big contract.

I have a very good feeling on this deal. Very good. Compared only to signing Rose in 1980.
    = title

and no without Pence I do not think they could or would win one.

Andrew I am on board and hope you are right, also agree that it was getting stale, some of that is Charlie. He has trouble making changes and sitting veterans he is loyal to.

Pence could be the spark they need, but what I am saying is that I don’t think they were not a championship team if the did not make the trade. Their pitching is far superior to everyone’s including the Giants. Howard, Rollins, and Utley are great second half players too. If they all get hot right now it may be because of Pence, but it may just be because that is what they do and have done in the past! I mean they won the WFC in 08 not 05 it is 3 years ago this core is still solid, but the window is small.

Touche, Raul. I am glad to eat crow when Raul has a great game. I hope nobody thinks that I root for Raul to fail for the would be the same as rooting against the Fightins. I was at the game in fact and it was hotter than hell.

Pete Rose for the ’80 Phils. Mutombo for the ’01 Sixers. etc.

When a time is missing that “it”, I believe that “it” can something other than pure stats. Pence loves the game. He’s different. He’s wide eyed. When you saw Pence grab his helmet and smile after that blown call last night, did you love him? His bat adds balance and perahps his personality adds balance, too. This core has been together a long time. Professional, workmanlike, etc. A jolt of exuberance? Maybe he’s just got what the Phillies need, period and leave it at that. I love the guy. Didn’t think I would this much. But I do.

He’s not Pete Rose but he just might do.

Its always nice to see people come on here and eat crow, it seperates the adults from the children in my eyes. I dont think any believes you root against him, but I believe at times you turn a blind eye to what Raul might actually be doing. For instance, in the Month of July he has hit nearly .300 with 15 RBI’s, or was that before today? Thats a nice split! Even with those numbers BEFORE today, just yesterday you wanted him gone. We all know he is streaky.

The way summed up Pence is perfect! A jolt of exuberance, enthusiasm. And yes, when he was called out when he was CLEARLY safe yesterday, his reaction was classic. Show emotion, dont get in the umps face, and go on a tirade and get ignorrant (Niger Morgan ring a bell). He grabs his helmet and jogs back to the dug out, clearly not happy with a blown call. Hard nosed, hard working player, who gives it his all.
