Livan Hernandez (6-11, 4.41 ERA) vs. Cole Hamels (13-6, 2.53 ERA)
Cole Hamels will look to continue to boost his Cy Young credentials tonight against the Nats. He has given up 2 runs or less in 13 of his last 14 starts. He missed a shutout by one pitch last weekend against the Giants. He’ll have another opportunity for one against the Nats offense that has a team OPS of just .688 on the season. And, they’ll likely be without slugger Mike Morse who is dealing with a bruised arm after taking a pitch off it.
On May 3, Hamels tossed a complete game against the Nationals, giving up just one run on five hits while striking out six. He owns them.
The Phillies as a whole own Jayson Werth, too. Not literally, because the Nationals are inexplicably paying him $126 million over seven seasons, but because he’s just 8 for 33 against them this season – which is actually a step above his numbers otherwise. He’s hitting just…wait for it….227. It’s hard not to giggle just a little bit because basically everyone (and maybe even Werth) knew this would happen. He took the big-time contract, but even he never really seemed to be sure about it. Bad decision, but good decision financially. Oh well.
Your Gameday Beer – Corona Light
We’ll be enjoy Corona Light’s all weekend long on the beach and we soak up the rays and wait for the Phillies game to start. That’s livin’ right there. Corona light is surprisingly smooth and won’t fill you up. Most beer advocates look down upon Corona, but I’m of the many that believe it’s a great beer. I’d much rather drink it than Miller or Bud – but that’s just me. Enjoy the weekend! – By Pat
