2011 Gameday

Philadelphia Phillies (69-39) at Colorado Rockies (51-58)

Kyle Kendrick (5-5, 3.52 ERA) vs. Aaron Cook (2-5, 5.05 ERA)

Time: 8:40, Coors Field
TV: CSN
Weather: Rainy, 90
Media: Twitter and  Facebook

That, my friends, is how you open a 10-game road trip. Down for 13 half innings from the bottom of the second until the top of the ninth, the Phillies eventually won 4-3 thanks to a tremendously patient at bat from John Mayberry, who homered on the eighth pitch of a ninth inning at bat, and Shane Victorino, who followed with a laser beam blast in the tenth.

Once again, the Phillies had Huston Street‘s number.

Tonight, Kyle Kendrick takes on Aaron Cook in a battle of similarly-skilled pitchers. Cook has really only been good in one of his ten major league seasons, 2008, all-the-while maintaining Kendrickian strikeout numbers. In four starts vs. the Phillies since 2008, Cook is 0-2 with a 5.91 ERA. The Phils have hit .352 off him in that span. The current team has hit .344 off Cook collectively in their careers.

Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Raul Ibanez have each had great success off Cook, combining to hit .398 in 88 at bats. Ross Gload, a man without a position, is 7-for-9 lifetime off Cook with a dinger and two doubles.

Kendrick, meanwhile has had the most trouble with Jason Giambi and Seth Smith. Giambi hit three homers in a game vs. Kendrick earlier this season (two were off Kyle,) and Smith is 8-for-11 with four extra-base hits vs. KK. Kendrick has a 6.35 ERA in three starts at Coors Field.

Lineup: Rollins SS, Victorino CF, Utley 2B, Howard 1B, Pence RF, Ibanez LF, Polanco 3B, Schneider C, Kendrick P

  • Ok guys, we got a game with the Rockies tonight. And that only means one thing. Bad news for the Rockies.

Big man connects. Need more than 3 though…..Charlie might be trying to stretch Kyle into the 7th inning. That could be 3 runs before bullpen. Wow, on another note…..Aug 2nd and the postseason invoices just hit the email. they want the cash earlier and earlier it seems.

  • Yea, I got my invoice today. It seems like I am always busy for one of the days I get tickets for. Ohh well, the reason I have season tickets is for playoff tickets.

Pretty good run production so far. They have not done anything special tonight, but have 4 runs. Reminds me of the first week of the season.

Looks more like a team effort on the offense, doesn’t it? They need to do more of this with the mediocre pitchers. They had a habit of making sad sacks look like Koufax there for a bit. Kyle through 4 with 2 hits….looks OK so far.

That swing by the Big Man on the ol’ inside breaking ball…..nuthin’ uglier.

  • They are just taking what the Rockies pitchers are giving them. They are not forcing anything. They are playing really good team ball right now. I said it last night, they are not playing amazing ball, they are playing winning ball.

Really enjoyed that snag on Helton’s liner. Bet that wiped that grin off his face. Let’s see who comes out in the 7th.

There’s the answer….and Kyle gets a base hit to boot.

Looks like the big guy is getting fully into second half mode. 6 more outs to a 8 game lead. Can ya believe it?

  • Howard would have 60 HR at Coors…

  • 30 games over .500 in the beginning of August…

It’s like bizzaro Philly. All they can hawk during games are minor league tix….season basically sold out. I know we had runs like this in the late 70′s under Ozark….this just feels different.

  • I did not want to jinx him. But Kendrick pitched an absolutely fantastic game tonight.

The Phillies are just making sure that every single seat is filled during each game.

If we keep going like this we might be going to a six man rotation in September so I believe we will be seeing KK starting again soon. Everyone seems to be contributing right now.

Too bad KK won’t get to finish it. He did a great job tonight.

No runs on 4 hits, 7 strikeouts in 8 innings pitched. I think this is termed a gem. I wish such a line on any of our starters….bar none. Good for Kyle.

Who was that on the mound tonight, and what did they do with Kyle Kendrick? HOLY CRAP. I am officially eating crow. HOLY CRAP again. I cant say it again. Now the question is, is a 5 run lead enough for Herndon? 1 down!

2 down, and THAT my friends is why we have Hunter Pence.

Kyle Kendrick, beast? Never thought I’d see the day. Really awesome when he surprises you like this.

  • Kyle Kendrick and David Herndon just combined to pitch a 4 hit shut-out at Coors Field.

Kendrick was really sharp and could Ryan Howard be warming up for an awesome August and September? That would be awesome. Great win by the Phils.

Love it that Kyle pitched so well. He’s seems like a humble foot soldier who faithfully takes his job seriously even though he’s below everyone else’s rank. I ‘m very happy for him, and for this Phillies team. Let’s race on to a long winning streak!

8 game lead in the Division… is it just me or are we competing more with history than with an actual team right now?

  • I never realized what a good record Kendrick has. 42 and 29 is not too shabby. The kid pitched a great game tonight. Congratulations. It was a lot of fun to watch.

KK shuts out the Rockies Howard 2 Homers nuff said. I think they should of put Lidge in to save it would of been a perfect low pressure situation for him.

Let’s put it like this…..Kyle Kendrick ain’t no Adam Eaton

The question is, will Howard hit like this in the playoffs? I sure hope so. Some October first, I am getting more life insurance. That wat, when they win the World Series and I have a heart attack, my family is taken care of. LOL.

Gee, where is “WAIVEHOWARDNOW”? Moron’s mommy probably told him it was time to go to bed. Or maybe he was just too upset because the Mets lost again, and couldnt stomach coming on here tonight?

And where’s Andrew From Waldorf to whine about “the contract” ?? Funny how these guys hide sometimes….

    Give me a break Chuck.

Where were you when he swung at a 3-0 pitch last night.
    And weakly hit it foul.
If you swing 3-0 you hit the ball hard or yuo dont swing.

I am not always around to amuse you. But I do it enough.

the guy is masterful at hitting crappy pitchers like cook tonight.
And then the meanigless 8th inning homer.

He hasnt done what JMJ and Shane did last night in a long time.

He doesnt play the game right. But this team is probably good enough to over come it now.
It is the best team in baseball despite him. Not because of him.

His style of me first swing at anything play makes the team vulnerable in the playoffs. More so then they should be,

By the way great win. Teams rolling etc etc.
Chucks lack of understanding of baseball and how to play the game right forced me to make that post.

No I am not holding out on you chuck. Just dont feel like posting all the time. Because my posts never go un noticed and I always get involved in defending things.

      1) I didn’t say he didn’t hve a bad game last night. In fact, I made a comment on an earlier thread that he was probably still sitting on the plane because he clearly didn’t show up last night.

      2) You don’t “amuse” me……at all.

      3) MY lack of understanding of baseball?? Let’s not even go there.

      4) And…… I “forced” you to make that post?? Go get some help for yourself. You’ll be happier in the end.

I dont amuse me but I come to just see whats going on and you are calling me out.

You are a typical fan who loves your team. Thats fine.

I know you dont understand that Howard doesnt play the game right.
I didnt mean to offend you by saying lack of understanding.

And dont get mad when you call me out and I respond. I didnt post yesterday either.

The team is going gang busters and I am enjoying it.
Best team in baseball etc etc.

And the contract is one of the worst ones in sports and would get many a GM fired.

So RAJ has to make these deals to over come it.

And Brian he doesnt get meatballs in the playoffs.

and when you swing at everything you are vulnerable.
But it does inflate your HR and RBI stats in the reg season.

Too bad no Aaron cooks or Barry zitos in october.

    What do you thnk chuck?
I dont want him to play well?
    I do.

I know you guys think hes the reason they win. But he isnt.
But he was the reason they lost in the playoffs last year and could be again this year.

For me its gets tiring trying explain the sport to you guys. Some of you will NEVER get it.

Like my Rose to Pence comparision.
Or trying to explain to you that the stats arent as important as other things.

    OK enough chuck?

I thnk this is the best team in baseball clearly.
And it would be a better team with Gabby sanchez at first or Helton or any of about 20 other names.

And as he hits homers like tonight. I understand you will NEVER understand this.
So I really dont want to bother. Like Baumanns crying about the Pence deal.
Or how you guys would sign j rol to 5 yeat deals. And would never trade a player etc etc.

Ive stated my points alot. They dont change and generaly they are proven correct.

BTW I liek you chuck and you amuse me most times. You arent likr the guy who pulls the string on your back. I hate him.

Now I am hoping you are happy and I will try to post tomorrow. Just for you.

The Phillies didn’t lose the playoffs last year just becaue of Ryan Howard. It’s a team game….and AS A TEAM…..they pretty much sucked in that series, Ryan Howard included.

And please don’t try to “explain the sport” to me. Trust me when I say I have been around the game of baseball for a very long time.

And your Rose to Pence comparison is ridiculous. Think about it for a minute…. you are actually putting Pete Rose and Hunter Pence in the same category?? Please.

    No chuck

I am saying Pete Rose was the player the phillies needed in 1980.
Look at his stats. 282 1 homer 64 rbi and 95 runs scored.
For a first baseman no less.

Pence is actually a better player in 2011 then rose was in 1980.

But the Phillies werent winnig the world series in 1980 without Rose and this team wasnt going to win it this year without pence.

If Howard did things like nto swinging at 3-0 pitches and missing or tapping them the team would be better. It would mean less home runs and RBI though if he did that.
He should get 125 walks every year. But he does not. When you look at when he was a top 5 first baseman he had over 100 walks.
If he played the game right he would have better ratios and percentages. But less homers and RBI. The team would be better. Do you understand this?
This is were I thnk you dont understand the game. His 2 homers are great. It excites the fans but his OPS should never be below .900. And it will never be there again because of what he chooses to swing at.

    OK Chuck?
Thats my opinion on Howard. I wasnt hiding out. I was watching the game and talking to a friend.

He does seem to be coming around some. I am hoping the overall mood of the team and roll they are going on now will rub off on him. I think its possible.

I dont hope he does poorly. I hope he does well. But I do honestly evaluate him. Like I do any player. And thats my opinion on him.

If he hits 4 tomorrow afternnon and I am not posting its nto because I am upset or proven wrong etc etc. I just am not always on line or wanting to post.
Its up to him to prove me wrong. I hope he does.

Again….Andrew, DON’T question my understanding of the game. You come off as condesending when you talk like that on here. There are a lot of great minds on this site…yours included…..but stop acting like a know-it-all all of the time. You really end up looking and sounding foolish.

As for Howard, I never said that he doesn’t have issues at the plate. I get as frustrated as the next fan when I watch him swing at stuff in the dirt. But I’m not gonna constantly b!tch and moan about it all the time. So far, his entire body of work ….AS A WHOLE….is impressive. Forget last year’s playoffs. It’s over. Done. I would imagine that we are gonna see him win some big, big games this year and beyond. But that’s a topic for another day.

And, as for the Rose/Pence thing I get what you are trying to say. But I just don’t think it’s good idea to try to compare those two players at any time or in any context. Pete Rose is in a different stratosphere, no matter what stage of his career.

Thats how I post. I dont mean to be that way. I understand it comes off that way. Its why people either love me or hate me. I understand most do not like. And I am fine with that.

I am also tired of talking about Howard. He is going to get his homers and RBI. I really hope he does it when the chips are down this year. Because this team is an all time great team. And is probably good enough to win a title even if he hit .000 in the playoffs. But it would help alot if he hit.

Take care chuck and hope I amused you a little. If you didnt amuse me some I would not bother with you.
