2011 Gameday, Posts
Philadelphia Phillies (72-39) at San Francisco Giants (62-50)
Vance Worley (7-1, 2.33 ERA) vs. Jonathan Sanchez (4-5, 3.81 ERA)
Time: 10:15, AT&T Park
TV: Comcast SportsNet
Weather: Breezy/Clear 59
Media: Twitter and Facebook
They just keep on winnin’. The Phillies go for 8 straight with the unstoppable force on the mound, Vance Worley. He hasn’t lost since the dawn of time, or so it would seem. It’s actually May 29 against the Mets. Over two months since getting an L next to his name is quite impressive. I know people are waiting for it all to unravel, but when are we all going to come to the realization that Worley is a very good pitcher.
Tonight will be a telling start for him. The Giants stink on offense but they just saw Worley last week, so it could change the second time around. If that deceiving arm angle continues to baffle hitters, then it’ll stay the same.
The lineup is different tonight as Ryan Howard rests. Red-hot John Mayberry Jr. will fill in at first base and Chase Utley will be the cleanup hitter this evening.
I’d like to see the Phillies really stomp the Giants in this series to prove a point and continue with the winning ways. They’ll go up against Jonathan Sanchez who is coming off the DL and is a mess when it comes to location.
Patience, patience, patience tonight, fellas.
Lineup: Rollins SS, Polanco 3B, Victorino CF, Utley 2B, Pence RF, Ibanez LF, Mayberry 1B, Schneider C, Worley P
Your Gameday Beer: Anchor Steam Humming Ale
Anchor Steam is based in the Bay Area, the site of tonight’s game with the Giants. This bold hoppy ale, which we have created to celebrate the anniversary of their first brew at 1705 Mariposa Street. It’s a two-row barley beer that is a potent 6% ABV. Pretty much every Anchor Steam beer I’ve ever tried has been pretty tasty. And while I haven’t had this one, I look forward to trying it. I’m heading Burgers and Mac and Cheese tonight. Do the same and enjoy a late-night game. -By Pat

Howard usually comes back strong after a day off. Hope Mayberry continues to hit and earns a spot on the post-season roster. It may be time to say goodbye to Ben Francisco, who may really need some at-bats at the AAA level.

Agreed Bart – Ben needs to go somewhere.
Not a very strong start for the fightins tonight so far. As Keith would say, the night is young.

I was just about to go online and ask if anybody else )other than me saw) a rising possibility of John Mayberry becoming the Phillies starting left fielder next year when he hit a two-run homer tonight.. I can see Domonic Brown only given a starting shot (if they don’t trade him) on days that Mayberry platoons with Ryan at first.
I just really like Mayberry’s physical talents, cool and smarts.
His stance change has made him a dangerous hitter who seems to know how to make contact and wait out his pitches.
Thoughts anyone?

I’d like to see Sanchez’s numbers vs the Phils in his career. Phils sure look outclassed offensively so far.

I agree regarding Mayberry. He has immense power and if he can be discreet at the plate, improve his contact, he should be a genuine asset to this team for at least six years. I think he is a late bloomer. He must be a smart guy because he went to Stanford, not a school that accepts mediocre brains. I really like his, but what isn’t there to like. Plus he plays all outfield positions and first base.

Mayberry Jr. certainly has clinched a spot on this team for the remainder of the season. He has certainly made a case for being at least a platoon starter against lefthanders now. You have to give Charlie Manuel credit here because nobody else seemed to think he had any potential.

I must be a sick old fart, but I always enjoy a brawl. Bochy is a turd. But, because the Phils are so good, and because they are kicking the Giants’ asses, I am not surprised at the frustration of these dudes. Wait until we [play the Braves. Kinda makes you wish we still had Pete Incovilia, maybe one of the strongest dudes to ever play the game and a former Phil

Man, things seemed so quiet when I checked the score right before the movie I went out to see started. Seems like I missed A LOT. Victorino is a little guy with huge heart. Man I love this team.

Another nice win. So glad to see Rowand be the last out. I can’t stand that guy. When he was a Phillie, each day he brought a pack of cigarettes and a short length of tubing to the park so that he could blow smoke.

Anyone else notice cole not smiling or shaking hands with Worley after the game? Maybe it’s nothing but it seemed like frosty body language. Either way, it ain’t hurting the team’s success.

Maybe Cole is thinking about the payback he will have to dish out tomorrow for Shane getting hit?

the NLCS 2010 was very close. The Phillies left a ton of runners in scoring position … The 2011 Phillies has Mayberry and Pence . In 2010 the Phillies did not. Those 2 right handed bats make a BIG difference ….

the 2 run HR by Mayberry was set up by PENCE… big take out slide at 2nd..Raul was able to beta it out at 1B and THAT lead to the 2 run blast
later after the fight Pence buries one deep into left field
Yeah getting Pence was D+ trade … brillant call Philliesnation

There is a reason the Phillies Nation writers write for Phillies Nation and nothing of merit ( Pence a D+ trade). Man I love the Phils but come on Nation….come on.
