Philadelphia Phillies (74-40) at Los Angeles Dodgers (52-61)
Roy Halladay(14-4, 2.55 ERA) vs Hiroki Kuroda (7-13, 2.96 ERA)
Time: 10:10 PM ET, Dodger Stadium
TV: CSN
Weather: Cool/Clear 69
Media: Twitter and Facebook
Update, 9:18 pm: Placido Polanco was hoping for good news. He got none.
Polanco has a sports hernia, according to Ruben Amaro Jr., and one that could require surgery. First, the team will administer a shot in the area to see if they can alleviate the pain. If that doesn’t help, his season could be gloomy the rest of the way. In the mean time, the Phillies will continue to use Wilson Valdez and Michael Martinez at third base, but look for them to become players in the non-waiver trade pool.
Well, the Phillies finally lost. It had to happen at some point. They now look to start a new streak tonight as they begin a three game series with the Dodgers out in the city of angels.
Roy Halladay will get the start for the Phillies, coming off a 7.0 IP, 4 ER performance in Colorado. He should fair a little better in Los Angeles, where he has a 2.35 ERA in three starts at Dodger Stadium. Andre Ethier should be a tough out tonight for Halladay, as he is 5-7 lifetime against the Phillies’ righty with a home run and a double. Just for laughs, his OPS in that sample is 2.063.
Starting for the Dodgers will be Hiroki Kuroda, who sports a sub-three ERA. Although his ERA tied for sixth in the National League, his xFIP and SIERA tell me he is pitching a little over his head. No one on the Phillies has had overwhelming success against Kuroda, who shut down the Phillies offense over 5.1 innings back on June 8th. He recorded the loss, even though he gave up just one run–a home to Ryan Howard.
Lineup: Rollins SS, Victorino CF, Utley 2B, Howard 1B, Pence RF, Ibanez LF, Ruiz C, Martinez 3B, Halladay P
Your Gameday Beer- Port Brewing Co. SPA (summer pale ale)
You’ll need something to refresh you, and that won’t be easy on his hot evening. That’s why we present to you a refreshing summer pale ale from Port Brewing, from Southern California. SPA is a largely citric and piney blast of hop aromas that greet you. It has a very dry finish, but will refresh you nonetheless. Some corn on the cob, sweet potatoes, and filets on the grill would kindly go with this brew. -By Pat

These injuries dont make no sense how you going to be out for your back but not mention other pains. That could of been dealt with early on in the season not towards the end when you are needed the most….

real shame. atleast we know now when we can still get somebody. I know Brandon Inge is obviously available and maybe a change of scenery could jump start him. there’s probably some other options too.

I think Jayson Stark was saying Friday that its going to be tough, with the best record in baseball, for good players to fall to the Phillies position on the waiver wire . . . every team with a worse record has a chance to claim that player first (and I think all AL teams go first for an AL player.. then he’d have to pass thru all NL teams to get to the Phillies)
we’ve seen with the RedSox, Yankees before… them claiming a player just to block the other team from getting him. Baseically, its going to be tough to get any solid help on the waivers

yea. in fact the bane of our existence , Cody freaking Ross, was only snapped up by the giants last year to block him from going to the Dodgers.

What about Pete Orr? Casey Blake is another version of Raul w less power. No Mayberry cant play 3rd he barely played 1st.

hey, Dom Brown is learning LF, so maybe Mayberry can take some time in the minors to learn 3B.
he’s a tall, fairly athletic guy, so who knows.
I just know that we have zero 3B depth internally, and by my understanding zero solid 3B prospects coming up. so yeah, just trying to think creatively, ha ha.

Are you telling Jeff not to be himself? He has been like this the entire time he has been on here.

Had to work late and missed the suspension thread. But wanted to quickly chime in and say that I agree that by flipping his bat and starting for the mound Vic was wrong. He should have just gone to first and taken one for the team.
BUT…. for him and him alone to get a suspension is bullcrap in my opinion. Whiteside and Ramirez should have also gotten something and Vic is right for appealing based on that decision by MLB.

Frank we still have Pete Orr an Carlos Rivero is starting to show some promise. From what i understand Rivero is solid in defense his offense is lacking but is starting to show improvement. However he is as least next season away before to even be considered that;s why they went with Mini-Mart.

Jeff, who would you rather have at 3rd?? Polly or MiniMart? Just askin’…

Polly is a great player, but as you get older, injuries tend to add up. And having a bad back can throw everything out of wack. The Phillies have a good offense. They have some big names. As long as those guys are doing their jobs, the Phillies will be ok with Mini Mart and Valdez. They have All-Stars at almost every other position. The next 3 months should not be decided by Mini Mart.

I agree. I was just responding to jeff’s comments that “Polly sucks”….which we all know….jeff included…that he doesn’t.
I’m fine with Martinez and Valdez.. Actually would rather see more of Valdez.

Valdez is a better player, but I think Martinez brings a bit of a spark to the team. But I am fine with either one of them.

Rivero… Interesting. That’s quite a jump for the young man.

Both Valdez and Martinez are good guys who hustle but they really do not have offensive impact potential. The Dodgers do have a player who was a hero last year with the Giants and he plays third base. I do not know if he is healthy. His name: Juan Uribe. He also has some power at the plate. Just a thought.

Aaron Miles is their 5 hitter… My personal funniest Phanatic skit of all time involve Miles- the Phanatic was whizzing around on his quad during warm ups and stopped dead in his tracks next to Miles who was running some windsprints… He got off the quad and observed and then made a few gestures about Miles’ short stature and the finale- he imitated Miles running behind him… on his knees.
Remember when the Dodgers were seemingly the team that had the best chance of de-throning us? Subtract Manny, kill the confidence of their closer, add a couple of injuries and a first baseman with no skills and you end up with the mess that is the Dodgers.

I did not think that 3rd strike to end the inning was even close. But I’ll take it.

The Dodgers biggest problem is the divorce of Frank McCourt. It has completely tied up the team. They can not make any moves. That is what is killing the Dodgers. And the Dodgers fans are protesting. Attendance is down by 8,000 a game. Earlier during the game, they said the Dodgers will make $22 million less this years just because of the drop in attendance. They are going to be a mess for a few more years.

If James Loney didn’t stink and if Billingsly was healthy/effective they would have a decent team. They get nothing out of Loney- some defense but no power and a terrible BA. Can’t have that from your first baseman. But with Ethier, Kemp, Kuroda and Kershaw, you’d think they would have a better record than they do. Depth is so important…

Baseball players are human too. And if you have ever worked at a company that was having financial problems or turmoil at the top levels, you know how it effects the performance of the entire company. I have been through it with different companies. It is hard to give it your all when you know the upper levels of management are a mess.
They are having problems with payroll, and could not sign any players during the off season. So that is affecting the depth. They have some great players on the team, but when there is that much negativity going around, it is hard to focus. Some people respond to it by stepping up their game, but most people do not. And it can be quite difficult to get out of that slump.

Gee, I don’t get a chance to see anything until now, and it looked like Bastardo was doing well. Not sure why Charlie yanked Bastardo to put Stutes in. Tonights lead is not looking good right now.

This is amazing. Watching the ESPN Gamecast on ESPN, the Phillies chances of winning went from 92% before the first pitch of the inning to 60% right now with 1 out, 2 runs scored, 2 on, and Lidge pitching. Those are not my numbers or odds, but ESPN’s.

I don’t really think thats a damnation of lidge. just a reality that a base hit could’ve given them the lead.

Whew. Out of that inning. Question is, who comes in for the save? I wonder if we can keep a 1 run lead.

Way to go Shane! I think he is PISSED about the BS fact that he got beaned, never threw the first punch, or didnt jump around like a 2 year old throwing a temper tantrum (Whitehead) and he is the only one to get a suspension. BS!
