Washington Nationals (74-79) at Philadelphia Phillies (98-56)

John Lannan (9-13, 3.68) vs. Vance Worley (11-2, 2.85)

TIME: 7:05; Citizens Bank Park
TV: Comcast Sportsnet
Weather: Showers, 72
Media: Twitter and Facebook

Right off the bat, a shameless plug. Tomorrow morning at 930, I’ll be on the 94 WIP morning show with Angelo, Rhea, and the rest of the crazy morning team. We’ll be talking Phillies, of course, so tune in and listen to me represent the Nation!

Now onto business for tonight…if there is any. No one really sees to want to play baseball right now – it’s truly an ugly time to be a Phillie. Last night, two humans named Ross Detwiler and Tom Milone shut down the Phillies for three runs in 19 innings over two games. Despicable. I know everyone is mailing it in, but geez, it’s really ugly.

Anyway, for tonight Vance Worley gets the ball, and could be his final start of the season. He is likely to come out of the bullpen in the playoffs, so Rich Dubee and Charlie Manuel could look to get him a few appearances in the later innings before the season ends.

The rotation for the final games (tentatively) is Oswalt, Hamels, Kendrick, Halladay, Lee, Oswalt, Hamels. That way, Halladay and Lee will be set up to pitch games 1 and 2 of the NLDS on one extra day of rest on October 1 and 2.

PENCE UPDATE: Here is Hunter Pence speaking to the media today about his left knee patella tendon strain that is keeping him out of the lineup after the jump:

LINEUP: Rollins SS, Victorino CF, Polanco 3B, Utley 2B, Mayberry 1B, Ibanez LF, Francisco RF, Schneider C, Worley P

Post Road Pumpkin AleYour Gameday Beer – Post Road Pumpkin Ale
Oktoberfests aren’t the only beers appropriate for the month of October – you’d be surprised how you can make a beer that tastes like pumpkin but isn’t gross. The Brooklyn Brewery secret for this beer is to mask most of the pumpkin flavor with spices such as cinnamon, brown sugar, clove and nutmeg. Though not the best pumpkin beer out there, it is definitely one worth trying on this crisp afternoon of playoff baseball. Have it with some roast turkey, like in one of those Gobbler sandwiches from WaWa. – By Brian

Ugly at bats to start. Guess no one cares about this game.

Peter the gammon agrees with me. Today on wfan he said he does not think the phillies will make it to the show. He said this team needed to keep it going. Like the Yankees. One and done. I will bet anyone

Good at bat chase. 3 pitches. Looking like the big planet.

    Its hard to care.

But this is not the way you want to be going into the playoffs.
Part of the issue with clinching so early is just this.

The offense on this team hasnt struck me as one that can just turn it on at any time. They go through streaks of all or nothing. Not good to be on a nothing tilt on oct 1.

My biggest worry though is the Giants sneaking into this and facing them in round 1.
No I still favor the phils. But thats the team in all of baseball that can poses the biggest threat ( maybe Texas)

They need to play better. Period. The sky is not falling and I am turning away fromt eh games some to monitor other playoff races. So I am not caring as much till oct 1.

Maybe 5 hits and 2 runs helps.

    Espinosa is a PIA –
Worley has taken himself out of the ROY running, last outting.
Phils offense can be summed up by adding the number of hits the first 4 in the lineup have, 0 – 0 for 11.
Forget Ryan Howard bashing, how about the ugliness of Utley, Jroll (gimme 3 singles when nobody is on base), Vic and Poly. Its pretty lame. Phils are behind now, Worley’s season has gone on long enough, he needs his rest.
Glad I’m not there tonight, this is embarassing.

8 games left – probably the only way we’ll make 100 wins is by a couple of shut outs at this point. Francisco, Utley, Gload – Jimmy – where did the power go?

This game in’t over yet. They’ve shown more spark tonight than they have in a while.

Thanks a lot, Moss. Next time, we’ll just let the pitcher bat.

This is not how a 100 win team plays.

Brandon Moss impresses me not. A rolling stone gathers no Moss.

Sorry Tracey, I am finding it hard to see ‘Sparks’ with another single surrounded by 1-2-3 outs, again.

Perhaps if they could generate some consecutive hits? Hey, Clutch hits would work.

      Lets see –
Worry about losing 5 in a row?
Worry about the BP falling apart?
Worry about the first 4 batters in our lineup going 0 for 14, again?
Worry that nobody is hitting with ANY semblence of power?
Worry that our starting 4, our claim to the championship has started to pitch somewhat pedestrian of late (which is not really bad, considering 0 offense, it makes for losses)?

Why worry? These games mean nothing – right?

Here is my positive thought for today – they go 1-2-3 in the 8th and 9th.

Schwimmer… nice – at least 3 baserunners and he does not finish the inning as cholly takes him out and he gives up at least 1, perhaps 2 runs.
    Schwimmer!

      There’s 1 runner – go schwimmer go!
Is he married to Cholly’s kid?

    We shall see.
The progression has gone. Win world series, lose world series, lose NLCS. So the next is lose NLDS.

That would be quite shocking but is the most negative I can think of.

I am very worried about Utley and Howard hitting 3 and 4 in the playoffs. All banged up etc etc

Nats so cocky they are using a no name for his first career save oppourtunity.

Brooks have a drink. Im buying.

Braves lost Cardinals trying to lose.

I can so see the Giants as the wild card.

And then panic in the streets.

Not that tonight matters alot or this series. Im not stupid.
But trust me on the Nats. They are the suprise team for next year.
New manager Bryce Harper Strasburg for the season.

I think they come second in the division.
