Philadelphia Phillies (97-51) vs St. Louis Cardinals (81-68)

Vance Worley (11-2, 2.92) vs Jaime Garcia (12-7, 3.68)

Time: 7:05, Citizens Bank Park
Weather: Clear, low 60′s
TV: PHL17
Media: Twitter and Facebook

For the first time in 2011, the Phillies have an opportunity to clinch the National League East. They would need a win and a Braves loss to clinch. Depending on the clinching situation, the Phillies may put the Braves-Mets game on the jumbotron.

MLB.com must have a Phillies fan working on MLB.TV tonight, as the Braves-Mets game is the free game of the day for out of market viewers. So if you are in the Philadelphia market, you can watch the Phillies on TV and scoreboard-watch the Braves game online. Nice.

Vance Worley will start for the Phillies, coming off his first loss since May 29. He’s had 14 starts since then, and the Phillies have had 14 wins. September 11 was the first time the Phils had lost a Worley start since the May 29 game where he got shelled by the Mets.

He hopes to bounce back tonight against the Cardinals, a team he’s never faced. It will be interesting to see if Worley can confuse the unfamiliar Cardinals hitters. He may record a few backwards ‘K’s’ tonight.

Lefty Jaime Garcia gets the ball for the Cardinals, which is bad news for the Phillies. He’s faced them three times in his career, notching two victories to go along with a ridiculous 0.86 ERA.

Even more telling are the numbers of current Phillies against him. They are a combined 14-77 with Hunter Pence having the most success against the Cardinals lefty–which is telling since he’s gone a whopping 3-12 with three strikeouts. It might get ugly tonight.

Lineup: Rollins SS, Victorino CF, Utley 2B, Pence RF, Polanco 3B, Mayberry Jr 1B, Francisco LF, Schneider C, Worley P

GAMEDAY BEER: Busch Light

When the Phillies are in St. Louis [or hosting the Cardinals], we always go for the smooth, crisp, cheap taste of Busch beer. Tonight, we’ll go light for you, to ease you back into it. They don’t call it “easy drinkin’ for nothin’. This is an underage drinkers dream out in the sticks. Many a time you’ll find empty cans scattered in a wooded area from the local punks. It’s still $15 for a 30 pack, if I’m not mistaken. But really, Busch won’t kill your taste buds, either. It’s not the worst light beer ever invented, but it’s also far from the best. -By Pat

Huh. And the Mets are winning. I would have thought they’d lose just to spite the Phils.

80 pitches and not even through 4. Disgraceful

Cardinals lineup is pretty potent Jeff just be glad he has held them to one run. Not bad for a first year guy who wasnt i think even a top 5 prospect in Phils organization. Offense where art thou?

It’s a lot of pitches, but he’s getting the job done. And the Mets are doing our job fr us.

Seriously, the big bats are not pulling their weight.. We can’t let the Mutts do all our work for us.

I realize we need to rest guys but our offense is suffering. The colts did that a few years back and got knocked out in game one of the postseason.

I really hope this “sputtering” offense does not kill us in the postseason like last year. Wouldn’t that be a nightmare? Bastardo will come around, eventually.

The disgraceful offense continues. 7 games in a row now of less than 3 runs. This is the offense of the 2010 playoffs. They better figure out what’s going on before the NLDS or they’re toast. You can’t expect your starters to pitch a shut out every game, it just can’t happen.

That HR off Bastardo was ugly i didnt even think it would go that far let alone be close to staying fair. An unlucky break for him. Offense ZzzzZZZzzzZZZ

Hmn… well, I didn’t particularly want to back into a division title when the Braves lost, but I don’t want to go that many extra innings…

Great that the Cards made all those adjustments- should be fairly easy to navigate this lineup. Just need to score a run… Walk-off division clicher in extra innings would be sick…

They have to somehow win this yo…

Quick question to all of you… Madson has one of the best change ups in the game right now. Is it the best? Hamels, you could argue, is the next best.

Schwimer stinking it up again, have the guys from Lehigh Valley gotten there yet?

I love this team. I really do. I would also like to see them get knocked out early and eat the pie. Resting big planet.

Michael Martinez is starting to concern me a great deal. He seems a little on the dumb side, despite his athleticism.

Oh well. So maybe I’ll get a chance to see their 100th win on Monday.

  • Avatar of The Original Chuck P

Well, Pujols 4-4 means that his streak is still well within reach (.300, 30 HR and 100 RBI)… He’s got the HR, the avg is there, just needs a few more RBI.

Well the only good thing is Schwimer is getting experience so we can evaluate him for next year. He wanted to get called up an so he did. Next year our bullpen core is possibly going to consist of a lot of young talent. Stutes, Bastardo possibly Scwhimer an maybe even another minor league guy. This offense needs to step it up some cant make any trades now.

The first 4 players in the lineup 0 for 18 are you kidding? Utley hit ONE ball out of the IF. Pence hit the ball hard but close does nothing. Vic walked twice but with nobody hitting behind him, it did not matter anyway.

This is absolutely the worst I have ever seen Chase Utley. Oh well, I will be down tomorrow and with this team, they could easily win 9-4, either way a win.

Anybody know when Utley is supposed to return to the lineup?

He might have more range in the field if he played with a Hover-round.

This has been a week of struggling listening to jimmy rollins telling us his importance to the Team and watching his reality on the field. The DL, constant first pitch swinging, double play ball and the occasional world shattering hit, are causing concern. As a lead off hitter, not so good. Fielding excellent. Do we need hitting or fielding more as he cannot do both it seems. Is this his last year with the Club? Hopefully
