Philadelphia Phillies (97-51) vs St. Louis Cardinals (81-68)
For the first time in 2011, the Phillies have an opportunity to clinch the National League East. They would need a win and a Braves loss to clinch. Depending on the clinching situation, the Phillies may put the Braves-Mets game on the jumbotron.
MLB.com must have a Phillies fan working on MLB.TV tonight, as the Braves-Mets game is the free game of the day for out of market viewers. So if you are in the Philadelphia market, you can watch the Phillies on TV and scoreboard-watch the Braves game online. Nice.
Vance Worley will start for the Phillies, coming off his first loss since May 29. He’s had 14 starts since then, and the Phillies have had 14 wins. September 11 was the first time the Phils had lost a Worley start since the May 29 game where he got shelled by the Mets.
He hopes to bounce back tonight against the Cardinals, a team he’s never faced. It will be interesting to see if Worley can confuse the unfamiliar Cardinals hitters. He may record a few backwards ‘K’s’ tonight.
Lefty Jaime Garcia gets the ball for the Cardinals, which is bad news for the Phillies. He’s faced them three times in his career, notching two victories to go along with a ridiculous 0.86 ERA.
Even more telling are the numbers of current Phillies against him. They are a combined 14-77 with Hunter Pence having the most success against the Cardinals lefty–which is telling since he’s gone a whopping 3-12 with three strikeouts. It might get ugly tonight.
Lineup: Rollins SS, Victorino CF, Utley 2B, Pence RF, Polanco 3B, Mayberry Jr 1B, Francisco LF, Schneider C, Worley P
GAMEDAY BEER: Busch Light
When the Phillies are in St. Louis [or hosting the Cardinals], we always go for the smooth, crisp, cheap taste of Busch beer. Tonight, we’ll go light for you, to ease you back into it. They don’t call it “easy drinkin’ for nothin’. This is an underage drinkers dream out in the sticks. Many a time you’ll find empty cans scattered in a wooded area from the local punks. It’s still $15 for a 30 pack, if I’m not mistaken. But really, Busch won’t kill your taste buds, either. It’s not the worst light beer ever invented, but it’s also far from the best. -By Pat
