2011 Gameday, News, Posts

St. Louis Cardinals (0-0) vs. Philadelphia Phillies (0-0)

Kyle Lohse vs. Roy Halladay

Time: 5:07, Citizens Bank Park
TV: TBS
Weather: Cloudy/Showers, 60
Media: Twitter and Facebook

NOTE: Game 2 has been pushed from 8:07 pm to 8:37 pm due to the Yankees/Tigers series that was affected by rain.

Welcome to the postseason. Last year, right around the same time, Roy Halladay was busy dicing up another NL Central foe for the second no-hitter in MLB playoff history. While it’s highly unlikely he can reproduce such a historic feat, Halladay will absolutely be at the top of his game when Game 1 between the Phillies and Cardinals gets going.

Kyle Lohse pitches for St. Louis – no one really had any idea what the rotation would look like up until yesterday, even Lohse himself. In 10 career starts against the Phillies, Lohse has a mixed bag. He’s 3-4 in 10 starts with a 3.43 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP. In 60.1 innings, he’s given up 60 hits. So it comes down to, can the Phillies hit with runners in scoring position, because Lohse will give up his fair share of them, especially against the Phillies.

Halladay against the Cards; only 4 starts and a 2-1 record. Earlier this year he tossed six innings, giving up one run on just four hits. He left with a no-decision but the Phillies won, 10-2.

With Matt Holliday and Rafael Furcal both out – Holliday with a hand strain, Furcal with a hamstring strain – the potent Cardinals offense will take a major hit. But that doesn’t mean sleep on them. Pujols and Berkman are obviously firing on all cylinders. Allen Craig, who will fill in for Holliday, has been quite the replacement. Halladay will have his hands full, but I wouldn’t worry about him.

Let’s worry about what this offense will do against Kyle Lohse. A couple of weeks ago, Lohse pitched 7 1/3 innings, giving up just one run (not earned). In June he was the hard luck loser, pitching eight innings, allowing three runs. The odd part – he did not strike out a batter and allowed 16 fly ball outs. If the Phillies find themselves staring a repeat performance from Lohse, expect them to knock in some runs.

It’s what you’ve all been waiting for, playoff baseball. Enjoy, Nation!

Lineup: Rollins SS, Utley 2B, Pence RF, Howard 1B, Victorino CF, Ibanez LF, Polanco 3B, Ruiz C, Halladay P

Nugget NectarYour Gameday Beer – Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald Porter
Had this for the first time after picking up a random six pack before dinner. Strong, but so very tasty and not overbearing at all. Some porters have the coffee/cigarettes aftertaste, but not this. A guy at the sixpack store was giving out free samples of Great Lakes (a beer I’d tried maybe once before) and I was instantly sold, especially on this brew. Really dark brown, teetering on black with a taste of chocolate and a bit of coffee. A real thick foamy head that subsides after a few minutes. If all of those ingredients are your cup of tea (or beer) then get on this.  -Pat Gallen

worried about the rain. this is a major advantage to us to have halladay v. lohse and I really hope the rain doesn’t screw it up like it did for verlander v. sabbathia last night

Stop with the rain. We are a better team. So many excuses. I want it to be fair on both ends. The rain will get nasty tonight. Just call the game now. Play them in spring training.

OK, let’s show these red birds what the best team in baseball can do when they’ve got all their starters in one game!

Halladay will throw in a monsoon. No need to worry about the rain. I think it will hold off at least until later.

How does a Yankees game at 3 cause the Phillies game at 8 to be pushed back?

So sick of the Yankees dictating the schedule. Somebody at TBS or MLB should have checked the weather for yesterday to see that it was supposed to be nice all day, and then rain at night.

@Morris: Especially since we’ve got rain coming in tomorrow night, and the later our game starts, the more likely WE will get rained out! And I have tickets to tomorrow’s game, so I am NOT a happy Phillies Phan. :(

Kyle Lohse is a bonafide career skell.

LA on the radio said, “Can I change what it’s going to take to win this game? Because they’re not going to score first.”

Now boys you take pitches. You cant hit a 4 run shot with no one on.

Yeah, they need to run up Losche’s pitch count. I gather the Cards’ bullpen is their weak spot. We won’t get to the pen taking only 6 pitches an inning.

Game over baby. wow. Thats why the phillies should of rolled over and let the braves beat them. the cards are a better team. berkman on the juice is better then anyone on our team. phillies get swept. cards are hot and pushed hard to make it while we played with ourselves.

    WHEW! Nice play by Howard!

  • Posts: 0 Andrew from Waldorf

    Nice play Howard.
Now when you lead off an inning down by 3 or more you take pitches.
A walk is better than a homer in that situation.

Phillies have to take some pitches next inning. Calm down boys.

    Some one else count
    I cant.

Lohse is a career skell and the Cardinals bullpen is a disgrace.

WOOHOO!!! I was getting worried that the next post-season no-hitter with Halladay was going to be AGAINST the Phils!

Leave to the Phillies to make Kyle Lohse look like a Cy Young winner. No hitter through 3. Pathetic.

YES, Virginia, there IS an offense!!

Ok, got a couple hits and a run. Whew. Now let’s try to even the score. I don’t like our chances in the series if we lose game 1

Ah well. The offense has awakened. That’s a good sign. And we’ve got Lohse’s pitch count close to Halladay’s now.

What’s the deal with the batting order? I thought the whole point of the Pence acquisition was to prevent opposing teams from batting around Howard, and here’s Pence batting in the 3 hole

That’s 11 in a row. Now we just need some more offense.

@Brian: The good thing about the crow is, it comes with a Phils come-back (I won’t call it a victory yet, but it’s certainly looking good)

I’m sure the Raul haters would say what they Howard haters usually do: yeah, but he hit the HR when they didn’t need it (which is BS, because a couple of insurance runs are always a good thing, and very demoralizing to the opposition)

@Buffy: Thanks! I think the nation is mostly on Facebook these days, but I find that it’s hard to hold a conversation on a fan forum on Facebook. It’s mostly just a lot of people shouting into the wind.

Pitcher slot is up in the bottom and he’s well over 100 pitches. I’d probably pull him at this point. Don’t know what Cholly will do.
