Philadelphia Phillies (2-2) at St. Louis Cardinals (2-2)

Roy Halladay (1-1, 3.38) vs. Chris Carpenter (0-0, 12.00)

Time: 8:37 p.m., Citizens Bank Park
TV: TBS
Weather: Clear, 58
Media: Twitter and Facebook

I don’t think there is really much else to say. You know what’s at stake. You know the players. You know what they have to do.

So I’ll leave you with this. Maybe it’s cliche, but I don’t give a rats ass. The Phillies need a win and they need one now.

Lineup: Rollins SS, Utley 2B, Pence RF, Howard 1B, Victorino CF, Ibanez LF, Polanco 3B, Ruiz C, Halladay P

Your gameday beer: Johnnie Walker Green Label

For games like this, beer is hardly enough. Reach into the cabinet and find the good stuff. Or go to your local liquor store and pick up some Johnnie Walker Green Label. It’ll run you about $55, but I look at it this way. If they win, you’ll be celebrating and on a high with some of the best stuff you can drink. If they lose, you’ll still be drinking really good stuff. Sip it, try to relax, and try to enjoy all that Game 5 has to offer.  -By Pat

So much for the comments about The Phillies scoring more runs than the Cards, and all of that. The Phillies outscored the Cards in the series, and still lost. I wish I didn’t call a game 5 shut out when the Phillies jumped on Carpenter the last game. If you honestly thought that Carpenter was going to do the same thing 2 games in a row, you clearly do not pay attention to anyone outside of the Phillies. This is just down right embarrasing. The Cardinals have won the majority of their games based on their offense. Their bullpen SUCKS, and can only successfully shut down 1 team in MLB…The Phillies. I could partially stomach a loss if they could actually score ONE run.

Wow, Jeff, you were right, Ruiz is such a waste of space with that horrible play throwing him out at first off of Madson’s leg. Get rid of him now! LOL

Well, this looks bad, the only saving grace here is that the top of the order is up for the last 3 outs. Thank God, b/c Chooch and Polanco are 3/38 this series! Not even able to bat .100?!! Looks a lot like last year’s NLCS series.

What’s going to be different next year?

Any and every one of these core pieces who can be moved, should be moved.

Please dont make Ruiz bench. He can’t hit

Phillies need to make major adjustments on offense next year. We will lose some big contracts and we need to sign both Madson and Hamels.

    Say goodbye to the following:

    Ibanez ($11.5 mil)
    Lidge ($11.5 mil)
    Oswalt ($16 mil)
    Rollins ($8.5 MIL) PROBABLE
    Schneider ($1.5 mil)
    Gload ($1.5 mil)

Polly should of been taking out its obvious this guy has no swing right now cause of his hernia. Cholly is going with the same formula and wont deviate even though its obvious…See ya next year…

atleast they will end this season like last. With Howard at bat.

I hope the 102 wins keep Ruben warm at night.

With a bloated payroll, they get no farther than an overachieving cash-poor team like Tampa.

Why Charlie batted Gload instead of Mayberry confuses me. Gload has no power whatsoever since his hip injury. Now we get to see Howard make the last out of 2011, similar to 2010. Perhaps he’ll swing this time.

All things considered…..it was a great year. No need to piss and moan.

God, we’re going to get to watch Howard strike out again to end the season.

There’s something fundamentally flawed about this team and their approach at the plate. Can you see this team coming back next year and winning anything? At least last year they were facing a legitimately great pitching staff.

I agree, I think he is milking it a bit to try to take the heat off the fact that the season came down to him 2 years and a row, and lost them both. Where do the Phillies go from here? Jroll? Mayberry in LF? Madson? 3rd Base (Polly’s contract is up correct)? Blanton?, maybe Oswalt? Contreras was a waste. Bastardo seemed to have come back. Stutes, not sold on yet.

Sorry for being an idiot and saying it was doubtful the Phillies would win, and I was smoking something. Clearly I was way off base. Umm. At least Howard made contact? NOT. And went down with the left ankle problem again? Sorry boys and girls, I am done defending Howard. I defended him last year after the strike out. I defended him this entire year, but really came up big in the clutch twice? He is not clutch, and when it mattered the MOST in the ENTIRE season, he chokes like Donovan McNabb. Halladay AFTER the first inning, pitches VERY well, and the Phillies offense CHOKES. This is just down right embarrassing. Why the hell Cholly looks at his struggling lineup, and puts the same thing out there thinking it is ok for 3 hitters to be hitting very well, and no one else hitting at all, instead of all of them getting some hits? I dont get any of it.

Find me at the Phillies Home Opener next season, and say it to my face. See how well that does for you. I will give you a hint. I suggest calling the Hospital not to reserve a bed, because you will need it. That is of course if you actually get out from behind your computer screen hero, and out of your mommies basement.

What a disappointment. Once again, Ryan Howard is going to be the poor victim in this (even though he doesn’t deserve it) and everyone is going to call for his head. Plain and simple, the blame lies on our pitching staff. Lee blew a 4 run lead (and likely is the reason we lost the series), and Halladay had a horrible first inning in a deciding game. Some will blame our hitting, and perhaps they’re right…but the fact is, had we won on Sunday, the Cardinals wouldn’t have made it to a game 5. The pitching let us down when we needed it most. Plain and simple.

Yep, Today’s loss definately lies on out Pitching staff, and not the offense. If we had a good pitcher on the mound, we would have won 5-0 because that was our problem. Even Game 4. Howard, Ruiz and Polly did not help. The problem is Howard left the most on base of any Phillie in games 3,4,5. They lost 5-3. A little clutch hitting by Howard in game 4, 3 left on base, but 3 Strike Outs. Maybe Pence, because he left 3 on, but Pence at least got an RBI. Fact is, Howard IS the face of the Franchise. He is making millions of dollars to come up big when it matters most, and he consistantly does not. That isnt even talking about 3-0 count, Carpenter not hitting the strike zone, why swing?

Well, the turning point was the 2nd game and Lee getting lit up. Had they gone up 2-0 this would’ve ended differently. The bats on this team just suck – no other way to say it. This team won games all year with pitching, only spurts of scoring. Shut out in last game? You have to be kidding me! Next year, we’ll be luck to win the wildcard. We’re going backward from 2008 every year.

I’ve been saying it all year; you can’t hit, you can’t win. Simple as that. This team’s approach at the plate is absolutely pathetic. Now, you throw in the age factor. Prepare for a very long championship drought. The nucleus is totally going downhill. Let JBlow walk. Trade Howard. Get younger and maybe there’s a chance. Continue with this crew and the season will end this way every year. Totally pathetic.

Not so easy once the playoffs roll around is it, Philadelphia? Should have rolled over and let us win a couple at the end of the season, then feasted on us in the playoffs, instead of letting St. Louis in, I guess.

Yep, we learned that one in 1993 when the some horrible scrappy Wild Card team beat the “best team in baseball” to go to the World Series. I called in the sweep. The problem with your comment? Cholly tried everything he could think of to roll over against the Braves taking out starters, putting in his worst bullpen pitchers, and they still swept them. Oh well.

There was no wild card in 1993. Believe it or not, the Phillies actually won their division once back in the 1990s, before we came over and completely dominated the East.

Oops, you are correct about the Wild Card, however, who had the best record in baseball with the best pitching staff? DUH. I will give you as hint. The same team that choked that year, and it was not the Phillies.

In fairness, the Phillies weren’t really a lucky team of scrubs that season. I’d hardly consider the 1993 NLCS a choke by Atlanta. I’d think you, as a Phillies fan, would want the team to take credit for defeating the Braves that season.

I mean, we overcame the 103 win Giants that season and played unbelievable baseball down the stretch. Hardly a choke.

I love Chooch, I have always liked him. He’s a good player. But he is not the catcher they need. Catcher is supposed to be a power positions.

Power position? Your kidding right? How many catchers have power today…Not many. How many catchers in history have had power compared to other position players such as, oh I dont know the POWER positions like say 1st Base, or 3rd base? Lets see, 1st/3rd Tex, A-Roid, Pujols, Berkman (1st for much of his career) Howard (declining I think), Fielder, Schmidt. How about catchers? Molina is regarded as one of the best catchers in the league…Not a power player. Posey had some power, but not sure now. Sorry bro, but if you said he should be able to hit for average, I might be able to take your comment seriously.

But really, it had to be this way. All the signs where in favour of the cards. They had to win the wild card on the last day, Cliff Lee had to ruin a 4 run lead, Utley had to be out at third etc, etc. Fate made this all happen.

Well, I think the turning point was a slightly less thought of moment before the lead was lost. I thought it was Vic’s last at bat against Carpenter. You have a pitcher who had a COMPLETE inability to hit the strike zone, and he swung at first pitch, and grounded out. Following that at bat, the Phillies had a whopping 1 hit and 1 HBP. Vic should NOT have swung at that stupid pitch. I wish I didnt call it then, but I said then, that was the turning point in the game, and maybe the series.

Seriously? You find it completely impossible to see a game impartially and know when a team matches up with your favorite team well? Just because I can watch the game always wanting the Phillies to win, living and dying by the team like everyone else, I can watch the game impartially knowing full well when my team is being outplayed, and you know what? It does NOT make me any less of a fan. Get over yourself dude. I did call it after game 2, and I was told I was smokling something saying it was doubtful the Phillies would win the series because of the offense. Maybe, just maybe there are people on this board who pay attention to baseball outside of their favorite team to know the Cards match up against us better than any other team. Also to know the Cards have almost no chance against the Brewers at home, but will kill them in St Louis considering the Brewers have a LOSING record at home.

Ill write a novel in the post game thread.
Just throw out some thoughts here.

Someone blamed the pitching? Thats hilarious.

I said opening day this line up was old and stale.
Pence came in and gave it a little shot in the arm but that wore off.

Rollins bye bye. Utley try to move him if you can. Polanco bye. Ibanez bye.

Howard is unmovable. Because of his contract. But you can start someone else against lefties and pinch hit for him late in games if the other team brings in a leftie.

I am not suprised at all. I tried to paint a bright picture and be positve.

Also before I hear the crap. Last year the Giants were better than the Phillies. This year the Cardinals are BETTER than the phillies.

You guys need to get a grasp on things. I understand I am an asshole alot. And like mixing it up. Its my way to have fun. But it really is a realistic out look on the team.

Ill be on jack daniels for a few days. And will try to be nice. I understand EVERYONE is hurting like I am and wont be a dick.

Ill shed a tear for DOC. He deserves better and deserves a title. If this team cant compete and get him one I truly would like to see him on a team that can win the world series.
I dont think a team with Ryan howard circa 11-12 hitting 4th can win a world series.
So I dont want to trade him. I am saying I would like him on a team that is capable of winning a title.

Anyway Howard is alot like A Roid. Hes a complier of stats but not worth much when the chips are down.
I love the guy personaly. And would love to give him a hug right now.

This is a blow. But I really thought it was coming the last 2 days. Right down to the score.
    They didnt score a run.
Time for some young guys to come in and see what they can do. Period.

Look at all the fun we had this year. So, we lost in the playoffs but we will be back. Changes for the positive will be made. Folks, it is just baseball. Put your hearts back in your chest and realize that it really was a fine year. We lost to a great pitcher who pitched a great game. Halladay vs Carpenter will be discussed for a long time. No reason for Halladay to hang his head. Our offense needs an overhaul. We will have the money to do this and sign Hamels and Madson. Keep the faith
