2011 Gameday, News, Posts
Philadelphia Phillies (2-1) at St. Louis Cardinals (1-2)
Roy Oswalt, RHP vs. Edwin Jackson, RHP
Time: 6:07 p.m., Busch Stadium
TV: TBS
Weather: Sunny, 65
Media: Twitter and Facebook
Roy Oswalt wanted to go to St. Louis at last seasons trad deadline. Now he wants to beat them. He can help catapult the Phillies into the NLCS for a fourth consecutive season, and he seems primed to do so.
To beat the Cardinals, however, they’ll have to get through Matt Holliday and gang. He’s back in the lineup after pinch hitting last night. Charlie Manuel raved about the big bat of Holliday. “He is one of the top hitters in our league. And of course he gives them a bigger threat. He’s consistent in his hitting, and he’s got power.”
He certainly does add that powerful element to the Cardinals order – which doesn’t bode well for the Phillies because the Cards have been putting hits up on the board. They just haven’t been able to cash in. They’re hoping Holliday can do so.
If Oswalt were to falter, or even if that doesn’t happen, Manuel very well could use Cliff Lee in relief tonight. Manuel said he is available. Can you imagine Oswalt going seven strong, followed by one (or even two innings) from Lee to close it out? They might need him because of the five-out save Ryan Madson put together on Tuesday night. I have a strong feeling from what Manuel has said that we WILL see Cliff tonight.
The offense really has to bust out. Thanks to Ben Francisco, they were able to skate by last night, however, they certainly struggled against lefty Jaime Garcia. Tonight, they get Edwin Jackson, who is a bit of a journeyman pitcher. He is definitely a guy the Phillies can handle, and I expect they will. This team is hungry, loose, and ready to go back to the NLCS.
Lineup: Rollins SS, Utley 2B, Pence RF, Howard 1B, Victorino CF, Ibanez LF, Polanco 3B, Ruiz C, Oswalt P

Yea, I don’t know why Howard watched that pitch that was high and outside. No idea why he thought that would be a strike.
Amazing job by the umpires to blow two calls on one play.

Good job by Dick Stockton of pointing out that Hunter Pence is a former teammate of Roy Oswalt. Well, he is a current teammate as well. But that is beside the point.

God Howard sucks. Yes he can hit a mistake pitch. I guess the ump got him out in a ball in the dirt. If he makes 25 million a year Albert should earn 50. Jackson stinks. My god

chase getting over aggressive but I like it. not a huge deal . risk reward was worth it to me. you woulda had chase at second with one out instead of pence at first with one out. not a huge difference. great play by pujols.

Wrong bad Play. U want that man on second. Typical phillies score early and dont score again. Howard is ueless since game one.

Red Birds won’t go away. This has been them the entire past 6 weeks.
Fightin’s have to beat them, but not with at bats like that Raul.

Sad part of all this is that the hibernating offense is going to get a free pass and oswalt will take the blame from the fans.

Maybe the old man could of put Mayberry up there instead of Raul. Manage Charlie.

Even if by some miracle they win it all this year, Amaro has got to break up this offense. It’s painful.

Offense and timely hitting (lack of) have been the topic all year. No reason to think the playoffs would be any different. But losing to Edwin Jackson?
Still have 6 outs to make a statement.

we have a cleanup batter mr KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK howard batting below the mendoza line. This Phillies team is choking big time. No quality at bats.
How many runs do u think we will give Halladay on Fri night. We were loose in the top of the first and then our anemic offense took over. This team has the 4 aces but we will lose IMHO to the Cards and that drunk La Russa.

our pitchers have been beaten our batters have been beaten our bull pen has been beaten, and we’ve been out coached the whole series execpt game 1. why is it we have the 4 aces but in crunch time our pitchers always get beaten? why do philly teams always choke with best team, this is the same F##cking script as when the giants beat us. the same f%%cking script.

ryan howard is always in an 0-2 hole every time he bats and he cannot lay off pitches If I were any team I would love to face him in a clutch situation with a lefty on the mound, HE IS WORTHLESS

Ryan Howard – a 25 million dollar dope. Get someone in there who can handle the pressure.

It’s a shame tonight. They gave up after 1 inning, when they had a lead. I just don’t get it.

Howard can handle the pressure. He strikes out in the regular season a lot too. It’s not like he changes for the playoffs. He never chokes up or adjusts his swing.

just like i predicted before the series, we’ll win this in 5. no doubt in my mind. Halladay will crush the redbirds and we’ll light up carpenter. It won’t even be a close game. guys never pitch well their first start after a three day rest start. we got this. easily
