Philadelphia Phillies (2-1) at St. Louis Cardinals (1-2)

Roy Oswalt, RHP vs. Edwin Jackson, RHP

Time: 6:07 p.m., Busch Stadium
TV: TBS
Weather: Sunny, 65
Media: Twitter and Facebook

Roy Oswalt wanted to go to St. Louis at last seasons trad deadline. Now he wants to beat them. He can help catapult the Phillies into the NLCS for a fourth consecutive season, and he seems primed to do so.

To beat the Cardinals, however, they’ll have to get through Matt Holliday and gang. He’s back in the lineup after pinch hitting last night. Charlie Manuel raved about the big bat of Holliday. “He is one of the top hitters in our league. And of course he gives them a bigger threat. He’s consistent in his hitting, and he’s got power.”

He certainly does add that powerful element to the Cardinals order – which doesn’t bode well for the Phillies because the Cards have been putting hits up on the board. They just haven’t been able to cash in. They’re hoping Holliday can do so.

If Oswalt were to falter, or even if that doesn’t happen, Manuel very well could use Cliff Lee in relief tonight. Manuel said he is available. Can you imagine Oswalt going seven strong, followed by one (or even two innings) from Lee to close it out? They might need him because of the five-out save Ryan Madson put together on Tuesday night. I have a strong feeling from what Manuel has said that we WILL see Cliff tonight.

The offense really has to bust out. Thanks to Ben Francisco, they were able to skate by last night, however, they certainly struggled against lefty Jaime Garcia. Tonight, they get Edwin Jackson, who is a bit of a journeyman pitcher. He is definitely a guy the Phillies can handle, and I expect they will. This team is hungry, loose, and ready to go back to the NLCS.

Lineup: Rollins SS, Utley 2B, Pence RF, Howard 1B, Victorino CF, Ibanez LF, Polanco 3B, Ruiz C, Oswalt P

The only people who had a worse game than the umpires were the Phillies.

I love how they celebrate like they won the series. Carp has pitched too many innings this year he has nothing left. Halladay is too good to loose game 5 against the cards at home. Should be fun to watch.

I’ll take my chances with Roy on the hill tomorrow but the Cardinals have certainly put a scare into me. Game 5 ? Winner take all. God lord they better win.

The Phillies can only win on Friday if they actually play a whole 9 inning game. Once again, they jumped out to an early lead and then quit playing. it’s pathetic and embarrassing.

yep. in a game like this with an offense like they have, there is no reason that they shouldn’t have knocked around jackson for 5 or 6 runs early in this game. he’s not a very good pitcher. and he’s exactly the type of guy the phils should hit against. oh well. we’ll smoke em in game 5. I’m feeling carpenter won’t have much in the tank. and maybe the crowd will actually make some noise for a game 5

I actually think the Cards have the advantage now. Carpenter is rested. We have no offense right now. And he shuts down the Phils. Doc will be Doc but he’s prone to first inning hiccups. Phillies can win this but they have to change their approach.

    Lots of complainers!!

We will win game 5. But the part that scares me is if Doc mows them down and we score 1 or 2 runs, it still does not address the problem that we had ALL season- our offense!
Yes, we won a lot of games in the regular season and our O shined at times, but, this is the playoffs!! Matchups are crucial!! Ala the lefty who came in (rezsy..) and K’ed Howard. So, u are seeing a problem that has been w us all season long.
Game 4 and our 4,5,6 hitters go hitLESS- ballgame! No excuse whatsoever.
But PN…on a POSITIVE note please- what do u think we should do? Adjust our LINEUP? But we destroyed Carp w our current lineup. Shane and Plac need a change up somewhere. Your op…
