Jayson Stark of ESPN.com said in a series of tweets that the Phillies were attempting to unload Joe Blanton in an attempt to clear salary space to keep Roy Oswalt.

Verrrry interesting, to say the least. Who would that taker be, if they were able to find one? Undoubtedly, the Phillies would have to eat some, if not ALL, the remaining money on Blanton’s contract. Right now there does not seem to be any sort of market for Blanton, which significantly hurts the Phillies chances of re-signing Little Roy.

Well had we traded Blanton last year, even if for crap we would have been fine. The big oompa loompa is getting paid good for being a crap of a pitcher.

I’m sure this story comes as a surprise to no one.

They’ve been trying to move him for a couple of years now…this must be a slow news day…

    Hey Pat,
I probably should know this, but have to admit I still have a lot to learn about the business side of baseball.

    Three part question-

If the Phillies paid most or all of Blanton’s salary to move him, does that count against their payroll LT threshold?
Or does it go against the team that acquires him even if the Phils paid for it?
Or is it just an expenditure that doesn’t have to be accounted for by MLB?

    Anyone know?

Lefty, it would count against the Phillies payroll.

If you look at this link at the bottom, you’ll see the Astros picking up $7MM for the Astros: https://spreadsheets.google.com/a/philliesnation.com/pub?key=0Ah4PW47PiAi-dHZvamdrWFZfWlljRW5mejVNa2pmRVE&output=html

Ok- Now I’m just further confused. If that’s right, how does moving Blanton clear space for Oswalt? Sorry man, not trying to pin you, just really curious to know. Also I got your email and I’m working on it.

I guess it means that the only space that would be cleared would be whatever of Blanton’s salary the other team would be willing to take on.

Depending on the rest of the trade, that could conceivably be substantial.

Don’t forget to add on the 2m they already paid to Oswalt to get out of the contract. So, if for instance, they could got a substantial amount – say half- of Blanton’s 8.5 off the books, plus the 2 they already paid Oswalt they still will have paid 6.5 plus whatever RoyO is asking for. If that is 10m- then they should have just kept him and paid the16 he was owed.

This makes no sense to me whatsoever.

i guess it couldn’t have hurt to ask around, but at this point, they should probably just keep big Joe and hope for the best. There’s no reason to believe Oswalt’s back was any better or worse an injury then Blanton’s elbow. The original contract was a mistake, but it’s almost over.

In the early 2000′s, Dallas Green was interviewed and said that back in the late 90′s the Phils were considering picking up an aging Randy Johnson.

Oh well… trades that did not happen… nothing done

Yea we kind of figured that would be a possibility. They tried this last year no takers. He is the Phillies version of Mr. Elton. Im afraid we will be stuck with Joey B for another year.

I know I am alone on here on this one, But no one has a crystal ball that can tell them if someone is going to get hurt, and what Big Joe brought to the mound if he was not injured money wise is not really a lot of money look at what average 7-8 innings guys with a 3.5-4 ERA are getting, look at the innings he pitched in the past and there was no signs that he was a health risk. Yea now they are over paying him because he has been hurt for two years, but you could not know that when he was signed. And if he can pitch all year with out getting hurt it may not be bad money spent, Little Roy will not pitch a full season every again maybe 23-25 starts. I like him as a pitcher but the back issues worry me more. I am surprised he is not retireing to his farm

If no one has a crystal ball on this, how did you find out that Oswalt “will not pitch a full season every again maybe 23-25 starts.”?

You must have better tarot cards than the rest of us.

Sorry beta – I did have some higher hopes for Joe when he came here, he won 16 for Oakland and an ERA in the mid 3′s would be fine for a #3 or 4 starter but, there were too many games where Joe would give up a 3 spot in the top of the first and the Phils would have to fight back. Going 7? He usually made 5 maybe 6. If at 7, it was a definite stretch for Joe and Chollie.

Who cares. What I want is for Hamels to be extende.

What a shock, there’s no market for Blanton!!!!
If we can manage to unload this guy and bring Oswalt back, I believe it could be the difference between struggling to win the division and rolling into the playoffs.
Put a fork in Blanton, he is done!
Hopefully there is an Ed Wade kind of GM out there willing to take a chance on him.

As usual i agree with Brooks. Joe would start a game give up 2-3 runs in the first 2 innings. He would then settle down for a few innings then implode by the 6th. Seven with Joey B was usually a stretch. If he some how manage not to unravel by the 6th, he would go Chernobyl on the 7th.

Ruben has made two very obvious mistakes regarding Blanton, and some of us have been pointing it out the minute he’s made them:

    a) Giving him an unnecessary 3-year deal. He probably got too excited about that WS HR, cause that 4.20 ERA in his short stay with the Phillies at that point did NOT warrant that type of deal. He gave him even more money than Shane Victorino! That made little to no sense.

    b) Not trading him before the 2011 season. Some of us fiercely advocated that it was definitely the right time to trade him… even if it was for PEANUTS… the main objective was to clear up salary space (16 million at that point, which would go a long way in helping us extend Hamels… or do anything with it. Today that would mean having back Roy Oswalt, a solid upgrade to our rotation).

At this point, we might as well hold on to him because there’s absolutely no point in giving him up and sending more than half of the money he’s owed to whoever wants him. There’s still a chance that he’ll be serviceable like in 2009. (Gotta say, though, his decision to not get surgery and instead just rest has me worried that the problem will pop back up again. Why not just get surgery… fix the problem from the source? He would’ve still had time to recover for the 2012 season.)

The winter that RAJ extended Blanton was certainly an interesting one…especially when you look at how Amaro handled Lee. They couldn’t afford Lee at $9M, but then went and signed Blanton for $7 (plus two additional years). The fact that RAJ then brought Lee right back after one season made it even more bizarre.
