Amaro Talks Lee, Contreras, De Fratus Injuries

Ruben Amaro spoke to the media on Friday, the Phillies’ first full-squad practice day, regarding injuries to several players.

Cliff Lee missed a bullpen session yesterday with midsection soreness. “It’s really minimal, I’m not worried about Cliff,” Amaro said, according to MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki.

The Phils and Jose Contreras were “very encouraged” by Big Truck’s bullpen session Friday morning. “I think he had a really good demeanor when he walked off the mound,” Amaro said of the 40-year-old righty who made only 17 appearances in 2011 because of elbow problems. “That’s a very, very good step for him.”

Young reliever and Phillies Nation contributor Justin de Fratus will be shut down for at least a week because of right elbow soreness. De Fratus’ elbow reportedly first tightened in January and the team is taking a cautious approach.

In other news…

Michael Schwimer was a guest on CSNPhilly.com’s Lunch Break this morning. He sat down with John Gonzalez to discuss life in the big leagues and rookie hazing.

So Ruben… you’re not worried about Lee? Just like you weren’t worried about Utley last year?? We’d rather know the truth up front this time.

Not going to happen not with the Phillies and RAJ. Theyll hide smoke and screen any injuries until the last second.

Amaro has played things close to his vest, but I don’t think he is this time. Lee himself has said he’s had this abdominal tightness in the past, that ii’s no big thing, and he (Lee) just wants to be cautious. He also flat out stated that DeFratus would not throw for at least a week and would be seeing the team doctor shortly. Finally, he’s being really cautious about Howard, seemingly taking that “ahead of schedule” thing with a grain of salt.

Last year was last year. Maybe Amaro’s finally learning not to alienate fans with his murky and overly optimistic injury reports.

I’m fairly new here, so what’s the deal? Do you have some kind of issue with Utley?

Schmenk, I kinda think he has issues with everybody …

GMs are supposed to give us and the opposition as little injury information as possible- and they’ll be cautious with their big ticket players… No need to rush Lee, Howard etc back we need them healthy for the stretch-run, not for the stretching and running

I’m fairly new here, too, and I gotta wonder why some of these people bother going to games or following the team. All they do is gripe.
