So much for the depth Joel Pineiro would bring to the Phillies pitching staff at the minor league level. According to the Phillies communications department twitter page, they have released the 33-year-old right-hander just before he was scheduled to pitch today.
Many had asked about Pineiro perhaps having an outside shot at making the team, which was never a reality. However, he could have provided the Phils a decent option at Triple-A. He is now gone, and the Phillies continue to go younger, just as they did when they decided Dontrelle Willis was not a fit.

Whenever these guys get released so early in Spring Training I have to figure they must be pretty bad if the team doesn’t want to even spend the time and effort to see if they can work out their problems.

A player with more than six years of service time signed to a minor-league deal after his major-league contract expired gets a March 31 out-clause if he isn’t on the major league roster at that date. If he accepts a minor league assignment, the Phillies would owe him a $100,000 bonus and Pineiro would have another out-clause on June 1.
That same scenario applies to Juan Pierre.
I’m Ted Bell.
