Philadelphia Phillies (5-6) vs. San Francisco Giants (5-6)

Cliff Lee (0-1, 2.35) vs. Matt Cain (1-0, 3.00)

Time: 10:15 PM, AT&T Park
TV: The Comcast Network
Weather: Partly Cloudy, 52
Media: Twitter and Facebook

Behind the left arm of Cliff Lee, the Phillies will seek their first road series win of the season when they take on the Giants at AT&T Park. Lee has pitched incredibly well in San Francisco during the regular season, going 3-0 in three starts there, with a  0.72 ERA throughout his career. That includes his Phillies debut in 2009, when he went 9 innings, allowing 1 earned run, with 6 strikeouts to 2 walks. He was so dominant that night, that he took a no-no into the sixth inning. The only hiccup Lee has ever had at AT&T Park was in the 2010 World Series, when the Giants touched him up for 6 runs over 4.2 innings.

On the bump for the Giants is the number two man in their own trio of stud pitchers, Matt Cain. Historically, the Phillies have had some success against Cain, as he has gone 1-4 with a 4.17 ERA in seven career regular season starts against them. Cain has had their number in recent years, however, as he’s posted an 0.96 ERA against them in four starts since 2010. That includes a start in the 2010 playoffs, when Cain stifled the Phillies, holding them to two hits and no runs over seven innings.

This game has all the makings of a two-hour, low-scoring affair, as both pitchers have a stellar record against the opponent. It will rest on the at-bats the Phillies are able to put together against Cain. Though it’s counterintuitive, it may behoove the Phils to take some early hacks with Cain–something that should be quite easy for this lineup–as his BB/9 rate has dropped the last few seasons, and he’s currently sporting an 0.60 WHIP over his first two starts of  2012.

Lineup: Pierre LF, Victorino CF, Rollins SS, Pence RF, Wigginton 3B, Nix 1B, Ruiz C, Galvis 2B, Lee P

Your Gameday Beer: Guinness

There’s no better beer on a dank and dreary day than a tall Guinness. Though this beer isn’t an obscure pick, it’s a highly-respected dark stout with a rich flavor that’s bold, and chocolatey. It’s akin to drinking a beer milkshake. If you’re at the bar, and need to decide between buying food or beer, it’s quite filling and can satisfy both needs. Although it goes really well with a side of wings. -By Ryan

This lineup could be the best the Phils have to offer right now. Although I am not sold on Nix but who else is hitting the ball

I’m impressesd. After a lack luster first inning, Lee has now thrown 32 pitches in 3 innings, including a 9 pitch bottom of the third and 4 strikeouts. Of course Jimmy does not help much by swining at the first pitch…

There offense is really bad to watch. 1-0 giants win

6 games back and fading into the night.

Lee and Cain- all they do is throw strikes. It’s insane.

Pat. What do you think. Cole for Kevin yukey.

Stick him at third. Rotate Polly.

Cole for Youkilis and 4 top minor league prospects maybe. Youkilis has a few good years left. He looks like he has slowed down himself. There aren’t any 3B out there to get.

I’d be tempted to trade Cole for Longoria only because Longoria has such a team friendly contract.

    51 pitches after 5.
Like what we’re seeing from Lee. Anyone sense an offense tonight?

Looks like the same could be said for Cain – Phils need to show some patience

Way to show patience Mr. Rollins, go for the second pitch not the first!

Wow, a 6 pitch inning for Cain. This is incredible.
I think watching for some offense is like watching paint dry or grass grow

Lee has thrown 71 pitches in 7 complete innings. Only 15 of them were balls.
And because the offense is so inept, he may come away with nothing to show for it!

    Another 8 pitch inning.
How about if the manager wakes up and tells them to be just a little more selective?? I know Cain is throwing strikes but isn’t it somewhere in the realm of possibilities to protect the plate and just foul some of these off?

Just really stupid to let Thome hit against a lefty. Does Charlie know that Pierre is better against lefties? Just mind boggling how bad the last inning is being managed.

Dont get how Thome is out vs a lefty…how???why???

Why not just let Galvis hit there? Shoot, he is the only one that has been on this pathetic offense

I’ll bet Charlie Manuel is having second thoughts about not having gold glove fielding Polanco at third tonight. Wiggington’s costly error gave the Giants the opportunity to win and the rest is history.

They could have Brooks Robinson in his prime playing third and it wouldn’t matter if the offense can’t put a single run on the board.

At least Wigginton is in there to provide some offe….oh, what is that? hahahaha

That game is 100% on Charlie and his gut. WTF is Thome doing in there against a lefty? Seriously he lets an automatic K bat and then pinch hist for Pierre whose better against lefties. Should’ve pinch ran for Ruiz in the first place. He was out at 3rd on the Galvis bunt if the pitcher throws it to 3rd.

Even Polanco would’ve been better hitting than Thome since they would’ve hd to bring the infield in. Just DUMB.

His glove has cost us twice now. Against the Pirates as well. This team just doesn’t have the pieces to play fundamental ball right now

It has the pieces to play fundamental ball, at least defensively.

The problem is that those pieces are absolutely terrible on offense.

    Great.

The pieces are doing bad but it all gets back to Charlie. Mayberry has sucked since Charlie pinch hit Thome for him early in the year. Pinch hitting for your six hole hitter. I’m done with his gut. He’s been poor since he left Martinez in against Matsui who owned him. RAJ wanted disciplined baseball. Just not going to get that from Charlie.
