Philadelphia Phillies (7-10) at Arizona Diamondbacks (9-8)

Vance Worley (1-1, 2.37) vs Josh Collmenter (0-1, 10.22)

Time: 9:40 PM, Chase Field
TV: Comcast Sportsnet
Weather: Clear, 91
Media: Twitter and Facebook

Hunter Pence is back in the lineup, indicating that his left shoulder/arm injury isn’t too severe. He had an MRI which showed no structural damage. He was unable to lift his arm above his head yesterday, but told the media today that when he woke up, he was fine.  Also of note: This is the first time this season Freddy Galvis has been held out of the lineup for the Phils

The Phillies try to bounce back from a good old-fashioned beat-down tonight when they take on the Arizona Diamondbacks in the middle game of a three-game set.

Here’s the good news: After pitching (if that’s what you want to call it) for the Phils last night, it is all but a guarantee that we will not see Kyle Kendrick on the mound tonight.

Here’s the bad news: The Phillies still have a lineup chock full of guys who swing early in the count and who aren’t hitting for a lot of power right now.

Backing the lineup for the Phils tonight will be the intrepid Vance Worley, who makes his fourth start of the season. There are many among us–myself included–who cautioned that the high expectations accompanying Worley’s 2011 rookie season needed to be tempered because he was bound to come back to earth this season. But so far in 2012, Worley has made his doubters look downright silly. He’s coming off his best start of the season (and possibly his career), a game in which he stymied the Mets, holding them scoreless over seven innings, while notching a career-high 11 strikeouts. Worley has faced the Diamondbacks just once in his career and has never pitched at Chase Field.

The Diamondbacks counter with Josh Collmenter. Collmenter has struggled in the early going, allowing at least four earned runs, while failing to make it beyond the sixth inning in any of his first three starts. He’s primarily a fastball pitcher who has been leaving the ball out over the plate of late. Historically, this would be the ideal pitcher for the Phillies to get right against, but I wouldn’t count on any fireworks with the way this lineup has been hitting. In one career start against the Phils, Collmenter went 7.2 innings while allowing just 2 earned runs.

Lineup: Pierre LF, Orr 2B, Rollins SS, Pence RF, Victorino CF, Wigginton 3B, Nix 1B, Schneider C, Worley P

Orval Trappist AleYour Gameday Beer – Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA

On Friday night, I ventured into the city to try a new seafood place. While looking over the menu, I noticed that they had Dogfish Head’s 90 Minute IPA on tap, and instantly I knew what I’d be drinking for the rest of the night. For fans of IPAs, it doesn’t get much better than the 90 minute. It’s a rich beer with a complex flavor that goes down easy, which is good, because if tonight’s game is anything like last night’s, you may need more than a few to get you through it. – By Ryan

Vance Worely’s last start came with a dominating performance against the Padres not the Mets. You might want to correct that.

Vance is my boy, hope he keeps our Phils in the game. Which I hope means more than a shut out (Offense, I’m looking at you).

I do not get it I know Freddy is not a 300 hitter or a power threat, but what I have seen in quit a few of the loses is the defense has put us in hole that this offense can not get out of. Mayberry needs to be in LF and I know he has played every game but the kid is only 22 he should be in there every game. Here is hoping that what is probably the worst defense the Phillies can put out there(ok maybe Thome at first could be worse) does not bite them in the ass tonight

We average 10 pitches on offense. Disgrace

Pence swings at crap. These guys just swing.

Pence should not swing. He is the only one to fear. This team is boring

    Done for tonight.

Once again this offense is making the opposing idiot look like the second coming of Cy Young.
    Pretty damn pathetic.

And Rollins, on a 3-1 count, makes an unnecessary swing…idiot

Agreed. Looking for a pitch to drive instead of a possible walk.

Pence. Oh baby. Rollins swung at ball four.

Rollins is a waste to sign.

About time they got to this pitcher. He throws meatballs and slow ones to boot.

Here’s hoping Vance continues to pitch well to give the offense a chance to redeem themselves. Jimmy has fallen from grace. Go scrubs! (I mean Nix and Wiggs!)

Man I like the way Worley is pitching. The slider looks great, and he’s going after them in that ball park without fear.

i am still trying to erase the four inning horrific visual Kendrick left burned on my retinas last night night. Anyone else think we shouldn’t have signed him?
“Kendrick also gets too much credit for his versatility — his ability and willingness to bounce between the bullpen and starting rotation at a moment’s notice. While that is nice, it has no practical benefit. The Phillies still had to make a roster move (recalling Joe Savery) in response, so while it appears that Kendrick eats two roster spots for the price of one, he is just a mediocre pitcher who really doesn’t fit anywhere but in a Triple-A rotation as an innings-eater. It just as easily could have been Bush or Hyatt getting taken for seven runs in three innings last night, but they wouldn’t have been on the books for $7.5 million over two years while doing so. Kendrick’s performance last night was just a painful reminder of the superfluous way GM Ruben Amaro has doled out money since taking over for Pat Gillick after the 2008 season. From needlessly signing Ryan Howard to a five-year contract extension in 2010, giving bench bat Laynce Nix, reliever Danys Baez, and catcher Brian Schneider two guaranteed years, and awarding closer Jonathan Papelbon the largest contract ever for a relief pitcher, the Phillies have been terribly inefficient and backwards-thinking. When you run a payroll in excess of $170 million, money can cover up a lot of mistakes, but it won’t be the case as this roster continues to age and key pieces — such as Cole Hamels and Shane Victorino — have the potential to change their addresses.” – Bill Baer Any thoughts?

I rather have anyone but Rollins. First off get him out of the third spot.

Put galvis there. Put Orr at second and get wright. Vance and brown

      Ahh – Rollins hate. Fine.

I agree that he shouldn’t be hitting 3rd. Leadoff vs. Righties. Ideally 6/7 vs. lefties, but leadoff would be fine too.
