Phillies Place Cliff Lee On The 15-Day DL

The Phillies have announced that they’ve placed starting pitcher Cliff Lee on the 15-day DL with a left oblique strain. The move is retroactive to Lee’s last start on April 19th. The team will recall left-handed reliever Joe Savery to take Lee’s place on the roster. During his first stint with the team, Savery pitched 2.1 innings, allowing one earned run. He had one walk and no strikeouts.

Kyle Kendrick is expected to make the start in place of Lee on Monday when the Phillies open a series with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

This is bad news for the Phillies as their hopes of staying afloat until Howard and Utley are able to return rest firmly on the shoulders of Roy Halladay, Cole Hamels, and Lee. With the offense already scuffling, the Phillies can ill afford to lose Lee for any amount of time. Lee has been relatively healthy throughout his career, so there’s a chance he’ll be able to return shortly after being eligible. Lee has thrown at least 210 innings every season since his Cy Young season of 2008.

Yup. It was reported that he injured himself in the tenth inning of the game against San Francisco. This is a tough injury too. With oblique strains, 15 days could easily turn into a month.

uh ohhhh! the plot thickens! hope KK is up to it.

I think KK is able to give us a few “quality starts” with the occasional stinker mixed in. The problem is whats normally considered a quality start isnt enough with this offense. We need near perfection.

Another result of stupid managing. Cliff Lee really needs to be pitching 10 innings in a game in april? i dont wanna hear anything about pitch count either. its still a long game whether he threw 80 some or 100 some pitches. a completely avoidable injury.

I can’t put this one on Manuel. He actually planned to take Lee out after the ninth, but Lee pleaded to stay in. Even after ten innings, Lee had only thrown 102 pitches, which amounts to an average start. This was just an unfortunate occurrence. One of those things that happens over the course of a 162 game season.

Yep, freakish but Manuel should have said it is too early in the season to pitch more than nine innings. The less these guys are out there, the more likely freak accidents occur. Days of rest are key if the Phillies are to stay healthy during the six-month regular season and be healthy in October.

Ugh… this one hurts. Hopefully the offense can come to life at least a little while Lee comes back.

You know the saying the stars are lined up… wow.
Utley, Howard now Lee – all major players in the Phils system. This is looking like it could get pretty ugly.

      No.

I dont think this offense is going to wake up Maziman. This is with the occasional break out games (4 runs) i think this is what we have to get use to.

AFTER WATCHING THE PHILS INEPT OFFENSE TONIGHT, WE NEED TO START PANICkING AND LOOKING TO THE FUTURE. tIME FOR AMARO TO MAKE THINGS HAPPEN.

Kendrys Morales–AGE 29– is a fine player for the Angels. He can hit and play first base and the corner outfield positions. How about Blanton, a minor league pitcher and either Mayberry or Brown for this hitter? He is a switch hitter and would have a position when Howard gets back and he could play first base in the meantime.

WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING……SOON. THIS IS PATHETIC. AND YES, I AM IN THE PANIC MODE.k

    Need a new manager.
The old man waiting for the skelled out line up to hit 5 run homers isnt going to work.

Pushing older pitchers with tons of innings on their arms also not so good.
But the truth is the long term is right now.
    Need to win this year.

After this year it just gets uglier not prettier.

everyone needs to get off charlie’s back! are you guys serious? cliff’s injury had very little to do with throwing 10 innings. he threw less pitches through 10 innings than halladay did today in 7. anyone who wants to argue poor managing is an idiot. i’m tired of charlie taking the wrap for every issue with the team.

everyone seems to think they would do a better job than the manager of their team, yet in the same situation, would very likely have done the same thing. hell, cain very likely would have stayed in that game too had he not been up in the bottom of the 9th.

is anyone complaining roy was in after 102 pitches today? NO! so shut up. this is a freak injury that could have happened to any pitcher in the first inning of any start.

most importantly… this means that cliff will miss AT MOST 3 starts. 3 starts that kendrick is more than capable of bringing it.

stop getting on charlie! stop getting on the “poor management” of this team! start getting on the current roster for completely under-performing people! the players in this lineup are capable of putting up a significantly better offense than they are right now. yes, they miss howard and utley, but they shouldn’t be scoring 1 run/game regardless of who they put on the field

I love Charlie. He is the old man and he is maybe my favorite Phillie ever. Player or Manager.

Cliff Lee is 33 and has 1655 innings in the big leagues on his arm.
Halladay is 34 with 2554 big league innings on his arm.

Its all going to catch up with the old man at one time.
It really is not his fault.
    Its the GM.

But the old man is going to ride them till their arms fall off. I dont blame him.
    Its his only chance.

When RAJ is canned I will be happy.
When the old man is I will be very sad. But it has to happen.
He cant manage a team like this.
He needed and needs the best line up in the league.

Not Pierre Polanco Rollins hitting 1,2,3.
    Its embarrassing really.

Losing my boy Cliff really hurts …. really hurts. I’m sure all our rivals just love hearing this news.

With the current lineup performing as it is, Cliff Lee won’t be missed. There’s really no difference between Cliff losing 2-1, or Kendrick losing 4-1.
