San Diego Padres (11-22) at Philadelphia Phillies (15-18)

Edinson Volquez (1-2, 2.98) vs. Roy Halladay (3-2, 3.28)

Time: 7:05 Citizens Bank Park
TV: CSN
Weather: Partly cloudy, 76
Media: Twitter and Facebook

The Phillies showed some life in last night’s 7-3 win over the Padres and will look to continue their solid play tonight behind Roy Halladay. However, Halladay hasn’t been so Halladay-like this season, as his outings have been inconsistent to say the least. In his last start against the Mets, he went seven strong, allowing just two runs. But two starts ago, against the Braves, he allowed eight runs over 5.1 innings, one of the worst starts of his career.

Almost all of his numbers this year have drawn some concerns from many analysts and fans, including his velocity, BB ration, K ratio, among others. A solid start tonight could help to ease the worries of many Phillies fans out there.

The good news is that he has been dominant against the current crop of Padres hitters. Collectively, they only hit .252/.292/.293 against him, and have just four extra base hits–none of them home runs–in 130 total plate appearances. Youngster Yonder Alonso has only faced Halladay four times, but has already gotten a double and a walk off of him.

Opposing Halladay will be Edinson Volquez, and he’s having a decent season so far. After he facing the Phillies and giving up three runs over six innings on April 20, his ERA hit a season high at 4.60. Since then, he’s pitched 19.1 innings over three starts, and has given up just three earned runs, bringing his ERA down to 2.98. On top of that, current Phillie hitters have posted just a .221/.326/.416 against Volquez, with Hunter Pence struggling the most, collecting just three hits in twenty-one at-bats against the Padres righty.

Tonight should be a low-scoring affair, and since the Padres offense is even worse than the Phils, along with the fact that Roy Halladay will take the mound, I’m thinking a 3-1 victory for the good guys tonight.

Lineup: SS Rollins, 3B Polly, CF Victorino, RF Pence, 1B Wigginton, C Ruiz, LF Mayberry, 2B Galvis, P Halladay

Bases loaded 1 out. Pence is terrible.

Terrible? Or too stuck in his head? He’s got to stop listening to whatever voice he’s got in there at the moment and start channelling Mr. Miyagi, “Wax on, wax off”

No doubt about it, Rollins stinks as a leadoff hitter with just a .270 on-base-percentage. Manual , if he has any guts, needs to bench Rollins ASAP. He should put Galvis at shortstop, Hector Luna at third or second, Polanco at second or third, Pierre in left field and either Mayberry or Wigginton on first.

BENCH ROLLINS, Charlie. At least for a; few games. Grow some balls !!!

Eleven runners stranded through eight innings with ONLY one run scored.. Weak.

If I were Roy Halladay, I would ask to be traded to a serious contender if the Phils do not pick things up by the trade deadline. He wants to go to the World Series, he is not getting any younger and for a team like the Yankees, or Rangers or even the Dodgers or Tigers, he would be awesome and we may get some damn good talent to help rebuild our system and payroll relief to hopefully sign Hamels.

Face it, we will be in the rebuilding mode very, very soon.

We need to revive the Jeltz award for Ty Wiggington. Four at-bats, every single one of them a third out in the inning, every single one of them with men on base (two of them with bases loaded). He is single-handedly responsible for the fact that this game was not a blowout for the Phils.

The team stinks, is boring, and is destined to finish last in the division if things keep going like this. This was a very winnable game against a very poor team. We left men on base all over the place and it was a disgrace.

Back to the Phillies of old — sink and stink.

Good grief! This game was atrocious. I grew with Bart, bench J-bag for a few. Let him send out a whiny, cocky tweet on his twitter account. Every game I watch any more makes water boarding sound enjoyable. The old man needs to retire. Here he is on pence: “Now, what we do about it, I don’t know. You wouldn’t call him a disciplined hitter. He’s unorthodox. He’s the kind of guy who, if he sees it and thinks he can hit it, he swings at it. Right now you’ve got to kind of accept that and hope he gets good balls to hit.” WTF! You’re a “hitting guru”, so give him advice or tweak his style or approach a bit. Good God is is that hard – be a manager! Stop walking in eggshells around these guys! Schmenkman I need your daily does of stats to assist me in believing it will be ok – it keeps my faith in the fightins.

In Jimmy’s defense, Hunter Pence has an absolutely awful approach at the plate. And in the field.

It’s really a shame. If he didn’t have an IQ of 60 and had some baseball acumen he’s got the talent to be a dominant player.
