Ken Rosenthal of Fox Spots is reporting that the Phils watched Roy Oswalt throw a bullpen session last week near his Mississippi home while the Boston Red Sox took a look at him this week. Rosenthal Tweeted: “One source said Oswalt appeared in good shape, but not surprisingly, more in spring-training mode than mid-season form.” We will have more on this as it develops.
In other Phillies-related news, Rosenthal also Tweeted: “Baseball suspends #Phillies manager Charlie Manuel for one game stemming from incident that led to his ejection by Bob Davidson on Tuesday.” Lesson learned? Never argue balls and strikes.

It’s about time an umpire got suspended. Too many times they handle potential flareups with a blowtorch instead of a fire extinguisher.

Davidson should have been suspended ….. Rule #1 of team-umpire relationship is DO NOT SHOW-UP the Umpire. Saying whatever Charlie said from the dugout, happens 100 times a game in the big leagues. . . . but Davidson took of his mask, and stepped towards the dugout, yelling at Charlie … Good for MLB for stepping up and suspending Davidson for being unprofessional here.

Don – you’re funny, dude – Wheels, oh how observant he is. When Richie Phillips took over that union umpires started to get more combative. It was always very simple to me: Players and managers freak out in games because the competitive juices are flowing – the pressure to win. So they can snap because of the emotion. Umps don’t have that – they’re merely calling a game. They have no stake in who wins or loses so why should they lose their tempers? They should just stand their stone faced until a participant crosses the line and then throw him. Just like the old days.

Thanks! …. and yea, I agree…. Wheels is by far the most observant of the TV announcers, and only Franzke rivals him overall . . . . . . . Tmac, Sarge, and LA are all clowns, but LA is the only one that tries to be funny
and actually, I should be too mean to Tmac, I just hate the combination of him and Sarge – its like Baseball 101 ….where McCarthy asks him the most obvious questions in the world, and sometimes Sarge answers them

For the most part I agree, but remember that umpires are human beings (even if they sometimes don’t seem like it). I know if someone were calling me a %&**!!@# I’d get pretty upset, too, no matter what the situation. Any living person can and does get emotional when his integrity comes under fire.
It does seem, however, that nowadays a manager can just ask a question and get tossed, and that’s too much.

OMG! Just trade Cole already! That’s all you hear about………trading Cole Hamels. Honestly, I don’t know why they didn’t do it in the off-season. Did they think anything was going to change? Now it’s Roy Oswalt. For the love of God, trade him tomorrow or re-sign him.

Blanton isn’t a sub-3 ERA pitcher. Hell, he’s not even a sub-4 ERA pitcher. If you can make a trade and get a little something in return… and then go out and sign Oswalt…. That would be swell.

Good point by Dipsy, Umpires only lose their cool because of their ego and arrogance. Players and managers are in the moment and doing everything they can to win.
Hamels must not be traded this season. We’re in this thing this year. Once we get in the play-offs, we’d be pretty happy if Oswalt can pitch relief too.
The offense may be hit or miss, but when it’s functioning well, with a good bull pen, and our great closer, we’re World Series contenders.
A slow start yes, but I can feel it now….. come back Howard, come back…!

On a serious note.
The Phillies coverage is atrocious. The constant cheerleading is a problem. They arent hardly ever realistic about the team. And it leads to alot of the fans misconception of things.
I guess when they were the best team in baseball it was more acceptable and tolerable for me. Anymore its just annoying. Its constant promotion and you can tell the team even sends them talking points every day and they go by those talking points.
Please no Oswalt.

There’s probably not a broadcasting team out there that isn’t constantly cheerleading for their own team, and talking up all its supposed good points.
The only “unbiased” guys are those clowns on FOX. They just compare players to the ones on the Yankees, and pass along their own erroneous ideas on why so-and-so should or shouldn’t do such-and-such. Personally, I’d take a little league P.A. announcer over Tim McCarver. At least the little league guy usually has something besides a banana between his ears.

Hilarious as always.. You do realize that the broadcast team is employed by the Phillies though right? So obviously they won’t bash their employers product … It’s their job to deliver the news of each play, and why each team might attempt such-n-such a play in a given situation..
It’s also in their best interest to help create excitement, “cheer leading” if you want to call it that adds enthusiasm to the broadcast which is being watched by fans of the team in that market.

When a pitcher of Oswalt’s stature throws, you’re crazy not to watch, especially if you’ve got a starter on the DL and another starter who’s likely pitching better than his usual abilities would indicate. Oswalt would be a good acquisition, because even if the Phils are still struggling later in the year, he could maybe be a decent trade chip.
As far as spending the money on offense, there so far aren’t any players available who could help, unless the team trades half the farm system for one. The Phils will have to wait on the returns of Utley and Howard.

One other thought: if Oswalt does get signed, and if Worley gets well soon, it would be Blanton who’s sent to the pen. Oswalt, I don’t think, would even sign unless it was to start, and Joe has had some relief experience in the past.

I can’t see Joe being moved to the pen though. I mean he’s been pretty darn solid as a starter and is really a starter, I don’t care how many relief appearances he may have.
This leads me to believe there may be some talks of a Blanton trade (which I am for. I love Joey B. Been following him for years since he was with Oakland (my 2nd team)) Seriously, he is pitching a little over his head so why not try to move him to a team that may be a contender but is missing a starter and is looking to make a hasty move.
GO PHILS. I go to school in Boston so I’m hyping this series up (in addition to the Celtics/Sixers series going on)

I’m not so sure Blanton would be traded. No one has seemed to want him when the Phils have tried in the past. They could, of course, try again. But if they couldn’t trade him, he’d be more of a bullpen candidate than Oswalt. He’s younger, and could get ready more quickly because he wouldn’t be slowed by having to ease a bad back into high gear.

Wheels – The colorless colorman. Bland beyond measure. Knowledgeable bu thoroughly unentertaining. Sometimes smug.
TMac – Made of teflon. No substance or personality. He and Wheels might make for good bridge partners but they are terrible in the booth.
Sarge – Goofy and whimsical. Says obvious things. A needed presence to counter balance the Wheels/TMac yawn-a-thon.
Truth be told, out radio team should be on TV and vice versa. I pive for Jim Barniak and Garry Maddox.

They’re probably too ugly for prime time (insert Sit-com canned laughter). Not that the current T.V. crew is easy on the eye, though, either (more canned laughter)!
Radio guys almost have to be better, because the television guys don’t really have to call the game, they just have to fill up the dead air between pitches. A radio guy has to tell you what’s actually going on since you can’t see it for yourself.
I’ve been forced to sit through some other team’s radio broadcasts. The Braves’ radio guys, for example, just don’t seem to understand that no one just listening can see what’s going on. Sometimes they don’t even give the score, the number of outs, or what inning is being played. You should maybe hope that Barniak and Maddox aren’t doing T.V. because anyone else might suck as badly as those Braves clowns do.

Im aware they are cheerleaders.
For the 1% of fans who understand the game though it gets old.
To me the Sarge is the best part of the Phils TV.
He is at least mildy amusing and is sometimes hard on the team.

Way too early to trade anyone. Phils are climbing fast despite a huge amount of injuries. If they get helthy the bench will be the best in baseball. need a reliever or two, but it’s too early for tht.
