Righty Brian Sanches had his contract selected from Lehigh Valley today. He fills the roster spot of David Herndon who was DL’d last night.
In 8 appearances with the Iron Pigs this year, Sanches is 1-0 with a 3.22 ERA. He has allowed 17 hits in just 14 innings, which is a relatively high number for a middle-reliever, but has also struck out 12. Sanches is pitching to contact, evident by his 2 walks.
It was thought that lefty Jake Diekman would get the call, however, the Phillies are instead going with Sanches who has major league experience.

Wow, I actually predicted something correctly.

I think Sanches has a chance to be pretty good. Probably saving Diekman in case Bastardo can’t re-gain his command.

I think the same exact thing, Lefty. Diekman also gives them an out if they are not satisfied with how Savery is performing. They also stall the arb clock a little bit on Diekman by doing this, not that he’ll be terribly expensive any time soon but it’s worth considering.

Not sure the Phillies are really all that worried about the arb clock with a guy like Diekman. He has yet to prove he can pitch at the ML level, so they probably just wanted the guy who’s been there before.
