Yup, these are our Philadelphia Phillies. A constant up and down roller coaster peeking about the .500 line before dropping back down. Win streaks of five games are continuously overshadowed by losing streaks of three and four. At one point this season the Phillies were 0-8 when Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee pitched.

The Phillies haven’t had much to get excited about this season. The starting pitching has been sketchy and the offense just doesn’t like to show up sometimes. A couple of bright spots for the team has been the output from rookie Freddy Galvis. He was brought in to fill the gap at second base for Chase Utley defensively. No one thought it would be his bat we would be talking about come May.
Also, Placido Polanco has seemed to turn things around and is hitting a lot better. He may not be the .300 guy we are used to but he can definitely help this team out.

Don’t forget about the future of the Phillies with the Minor League weekly wrap up. The organization has to be happy with Clearwater, Reading and Lehigh Valley sitting in second place for their leagues.

There has not been much going on this week besides the usual game play. Some things to think about this week is the fact Roy Halladay just left the game after two innings in St. Louis and Roy Oswalt is still available. We are hoping it’s nothing serious, but it seems the Phillies are going to need some help.

The Phillies are still holding on at 25-24, 4.5 games back of Washington. As always the NL East is a tight race and I suspect it will continue to be.

If Halladay is hurt, for any extended period of time the Phils are in deep. They could bring back little Roy, but well it wont be the same, plus we need offensive help as well.

No, offense is fine.
Unless Halladay is out, in which case they either need to get a lot better on offense or find a very good replacement.

i hope roy isn’t hurt too bad! hoping it’s not a rotater cuff. however if it isn’t and they can give him some rest and rehab he’ll hopefully get back to the good roy. as far as little roy coming back, to me that’s a big no no! then our bullpen will be really thrust into a rough situation while he builds up his stamina to go deep in games ( if he can at all) and if that happens we’re sunk!
now if i were GM i’d bring up a pitcher who can pitch and go deep! tyler cloyd is that guy! he can flat out pitch! he’s another worley waiting in the wings. roy wasn’t winning games for us we lost like his last 6-7 starts! so why not bring up a kid and give him a shot? the pen might not get wasted and if he pans out and roy comes back then dump qualls and keep the kid in the pen.

The only story this week is that of Roy Halladay’s right shoulder. Yes, other things happened, but none of them mean anything if Roy’s injury is serious. Shoulder injuries are amongst the most disasterous for a pitcher, and shoulder surgery has an atrocious return rate…something between 30-50%.
If Halladay is forced to miss significant time the return of Utley and Howard will just offset the loss of production from Halladay, who was an 8+ rWAR player last year. Howard, at this point, over the course of a full season is in the 1.5-2.0 WAR range and Utley is probably somewhere around 4 (+/- 1). That’s not enough, on a team that’s barely treading water, to compensate the loss of an MVP calibre pitcher. So every cross your fingers and toes and hope that Halladay’s injury is just general soreness and nothing beyond that.

Yep we are hoping its just soreness. Oswalt was spotty at best last year for us and from what i was reading his asking price is high. If they bring back Roy O that will probably shut the door on any other move the Phils where pondering. Including any bullpen help or any outfield help to replace or supplement the ineffective Mayberry.
