As first reported by David Murphy, BJ Rosenberg, 26, will join the Phillies today in Baltimore replacing the optioned lefty Raul Valdes. Rosenberg was 1-0 with a 1.74 ERA in 20.2 IP at Lehigh Valley and 11.3 K/9 IP. The addition of Rosenberg gives them a righty with strikeout capability. Rosenberg was on the fast track to the Phillies before injuries slowed down his 2010 and 2011 campaigns. Rosenberg, in his fifth year in the Phillies system out of the University of Louisville, will wear #53.
Thoughts: Valdes was quite effective in his limited time on the Phillies. In 12.2 IP, Valdes posted a 2.13 ERA with 9.2 K/9 IP. Valdes traditionally has posted a “reverse” split and there was no difference this year – righties hit .130/.167/.174 against Valdes in 24 PA.While I am really happy that Rosenberg was called up and think he can be effective on the Major League-level, I do not think Valdes was the right player to go down. I know Valdes has options and Chad Qualls doesn’t but how can you demote Valdes with as effective stats as he has and keep Qualls on the team with a 5.32 ERA and 1.636 WHIP?

Chad Qualls stinks, plain and simple. When he is brought in, I cuss. He is done, toast.
Valdes should have stayed and Qualls should have gone — released.

I think if Qualls doesn’t improve and guys like De Fratus, Herdon and Stutes are back in action, then Qualls likely will be released or put on waivers. Personally, I prefer calling up De Fratus when his rehab ends. We should wait until the All-Star break to take any action on Qualls since he’d be good trade bait to teams with large ballparks.

They should have sent Qualls down unless the idea was to exchange a lefty for a righty. I agree that Qualls should go instead of Valdes regardless of the “exchange plan.”

The idea WAS to exchange a lefty with a righty. The BP had mostly lefthanders, and dumping Qualls and keeping Valdes just doesn’t address that situation. The question of who should have been farmed out instead of Valdes might still be valid, though. Diekman may have more potential, and Bastardo is more proven. Savery seems to be more of a multiple inning guy, which a team also needs. But Valdes was certainly pitching decently enough. It’s pretty hard to make decisions when so many arms are on the DL, and the usual long man is in now a starter.
Strangely, the Phils had the opposite problem last year. Most every relief pitcher then was right handed.

Valdes has a good right split though, so really he’s more effective in the “righty righty” scenario even though he’s a lefty. Should have sent Shwimmer back instead. He’s terrible, and I can’t stand watching him pitch. Wouldn’t have been a lefty righty swap, but anyone have the stats on Valdes vs Schwimmer against right handers? I’m sure Valdes is better.
