2012 Gameday, Posts
Philadelphia Phillies (31-34) vs. Toronto Blue Jays (31-32)
Vance Worley (3-2, 3.00) vs. Drew Hutchison (5-3, 4.66)
Time: 7:07, Rogers Centre
TV: CSN Philadelphia
Weather: Mostly Sunny, 74
Media: Twitter and Facebook
The Phillies will try to extend their two game winning streak into Canada tonight when they start a three game series with the Toronto Blue Jays.
Wins have not been easy to come by this season with a lot of Phillies suffering injuries. Charlie Manuel has done his best to put a line up out that produces each and every game. Playing in the American League ball parks has allowed him to use Jim Thome in the DH role; a position he is very comfortable in.
Thome has 99 home runs in a Phillies uniform. His next one will make him just the fourth player to hit at least 100 home runs with three different teams.
Vance Worley will take the ball tonight for the Phillies. In his last start against the Orioles, Worley went six innings and didn’t allow an earned run. Worley will definitely benefit from Joe Blanton’s complete game last night. He hasn’t recorded eight full innings of work this season so the bullpen could be needed. Worley will also be looking for his first decision in four starts.
Neither Worley or Blue Jays starter Drew Hutchison has faced the opposition. The Phillies haven’t won three games in a row since May 23-26, when they won four. Since then, the Phillies are 6-11 including a six game losing streak.
Worley and company will be looking to keep the win streak going tonight.
Lineup: Rollins SS, Polanco 3B, Pence RF, Thome DH, Victorino CF, Ruiz C, Wigginton 1B, Mayberry LF, Martinez 2B
GAMEDAY BEER: Flying Dog Dogtoberfest
Perhaps it’s the rich amber color, the smooth and sweet taste, or the Hunter S. Thompson quote on the label, but something about this beer really does it for me. It’s been one of my absolute favorites since the first time I had it. It has a complex taste, with elements of sweet and bitter, but also goes down incredibly smooth, without being too abrasive to the palette. Despite the name drawing inferences to Autumn, the Dogtoberfest is actually a perfect summertime beer. Have it with some traditionally grilled food. -By Ryan
Go Phillies!

Once Worley gets past this inning, what else can we expect from him? 6 innings, 3 runs. That is better than what Lee, Doc and Hamels have been doing.
No offense tonight. Funny, Juan Pierre is not in the lineup either… coincidence?

I seriously don’t understand some of Manuel’s moves. Resting Polanco becausse he has a hurt finger? He’s rested enough this year.

buggy whip-
noun
a horsewhip once used by a driver of a buggy; “since buggies have been replaced by cars the buggy whip has become a symbol for anything that is hopelessly outmoded”
Does anyone know what Wheels is talking about?

Every team in the NL Eqst is losing. A win here is a must. Can’t waster good starts by Worley/Kendrick/Blantan. Still pised Polanco isn’t playing.

Wasted effort. All starters need to play when you have minny Mart in the line up and no Howard.

Riding on the bandwagon called the Stinkville Express.
Little joy and excitement, but a big ole mess.
Soon we’ll bid adeau to Amaro and his crew.
Sell off all our players and start the team anew.
We’ll live in the second division
And like days of yore, we’ll hear nothing but derision
And we will be riding on the bandwagon called the Stinkville Express
Little joy and excitement, but a big ole mess.

It’s easy to manage a team with all stars. That’s what Charlie did. Now that it’s different, he has failed as a manager. For example, with Rollins and Pierre on 1st and second, instead of having Pence bunt, as he should, Pence hit into a double play.
Wigginton is a poor fielder and should never play 3rd and when Polonco is playing, Mayberry should be playing 1st.
How much proof does Charlie need to understand that Fountenot can’t field?
Savery lost the game because with 2 strikes on the batter he should have “wasted” a couple of pitches and not thrown one down the middle. I blame Charlie. Frankly even when the Phillies were a great wining team, I felt that, at best Manuel was mediocre.
How much time do Ryan and Utely need in the minors to be ready to play?
