Nothing like a rain delay/postponement to bring back some great memories between the Phillies and the Rays. Cole Hamels was probably sitting on the bench last night during the delay thinking ‘Man, they would have made me pitch.’
Instead, the game was called and it will be Kyle Kendrick, not Cliff Lee, starting today for the Phillies. The Phils will hold off on Lee, who will mostly likely take the hill tomorrow. Kendrick is 0-3 with a 9.00 in his last three starts. He has bad outings in bunches this season, so hopefully he snaps out of it today.
The Phillies took two out of the three in their last series against Rockies, but have dropped 13 of 18.
James Shields will pitch for the Rays, and he’s coming off two starts against the Marlins where he threw a combined fourteen innings, giving up just one earned run and twelve hits. In the two starts prior, however, he posted a 8.18 ERA.
Shields was the starting pitcher in the Rays lone win against the Phillies in the 2008 World Series.

I enjoy the beer hints, but wouldn’t hard liquor choices be more appropriate? I would start with Kracken spiced rum. It puts even the better Captain Morgan to shame. I see Goslins is marketing two bottles of ginger beer with their black rum for Dark and Stormies, an appropriate swill for last night.

We have an awfully hard time getting someone home from third base with less than 2 outs, but an AL pitcher has no problem. Go figure.

Non-game related – Jamie Moyer released by Orioles as per his request. Would you consider taking Moyer over Kendrick in your rotation, slotting Kendrick back in the long relief role?

I just got in, saw Jimmies HR that landed in the camera well just in front of my seats that I gave away today! oye! I hope my friends caught the ball but it looked like they ducked!
I’m glad KK is out of the game, he did not look like he was going to hold any lead… 9 base runners in 4 innings? bleh

When Matsui first came up, his nickname for some reason was Frankenstein, I suppose because of his dire good looks?
What a shot by Juan – I was just looking at his career stats – he has never hit more than .326 in a season nor does he hit with any kind of power – awesome job. And thanks for leaving Shields in for us!

(sorry to nit pick, but they have enough real problems without inventing new ones)
The only situation that they continue to be abysmal in, and maybe this is what you meant, is man on 3rd and less than two out, where they are 14th in average and have only gotten the runner home 45 out 117 times (38%, vs. league average of 49%).

Sounds simple, but in series and this team can claw it’s ay back into contention when the troops arrive. However, I’d really like to see cole and Cliff go deep and throw gems tomorrow and get the series sweep. A great day when the Mets, Braves and Marlins lose coupled with a Phillies win.
Need BP help, now if you want to stay relevant. 3 down for the season is a tough Pill.

They need BP help big time and soon. I’m not deep into the sabermetrics, but, to me, it’ clear the BP is underperforming big as to be expected with all the injuries. RAJ needs to step up and get a low costing stable BP arm a team has no intention of resigning, maybe 2.
Honestly, I fear this owner group fears the ‘optics’ of going over the luxury tax more than the financial impact(purely speculation).

They do need bullpen help. I dont know about 2 but if they can get one good guy in the mix i think they will be much better. Rube couldnt have predicted Stutes and Herndon going down. Too much was riding on Contreras as well. Putting so much faith in Contreras was a real risky move by Rube. It unfortunately didnt work out. The minor league guys arent panning out so far. The only upside is Valdes has been a decent job in his limited innings pitched. However one has to wonder how long he can keep it up. This is still a team riddled with injuries and inconsistent play. Counting on 2 guys to come back and turn the tide. One suffering a progressive debilitating injury. Another coming off major surgery who looked to be on the downside of things before his injury occurred.
