2012 Game Recaps

Phillies Get Swept Out Of Canada

Jim Thome makes home run history.

Losing 6-2 to the Toronto Blue Jays capped off the Phillies 12th loss in 15 games and the third time they have been swept in a series this season.

Thome makes history –

Jim Thome hit his fourth home run of the season in the second inning becoming just the fourth player to hit at least 100 home runs with three different teams.  The other three are Darrel Evans, Reggie Jackson and Alex Rodriguez.  Thome hit his home runs with the Phillies, Indians and White Sox.

Thome’s home run put the Phillies on the board 2-1 and John Mayberry Jr. added his own long ball in the third to tie the game at two.  It was Mayberry’s second home run in two games and fifth for the season.  Mayberry was 3 for 4 on the day.

While the Phillies did add six more hits today, they would fail to cross the plate another time.

Kendrick being Kendrick –

This was the third consecutive start Kyle Kendrick has allowed at least five runs.  In his last three starts, he has allowed 16 runs compared to only five runs in four previous ones.  Since his complete game shutout May 26, his ERA is tipping the scales at 7.59 in just four starts.

Kendrick is no ace, but he knows how to pitch.  Rich Dubee is going to have to put some extra work into this one.  I don’t want to see KK headed back to the bullpen.

Looking ahead –

The Phillies will, hopefully, enjoy an off day tomorrow before welcoming in Colorado, Tampa Bay and Pittsburgh for a 10 game home stand.  This is a team leading the division, second in the National League, in hitting.  The problem lies in leaving runners on.  Better situational hitting is what’s going to get this team over the hump.

Philadelphia is sitting nine games back of the Nationals and six games under .500.  I won’t even try to pretend that I remember the last time that has happened.
