Joe Savery can breathe easier tonight. He’ll be a Phillie for a bit longer, afterall.
In the corresponding move to Roy Halladay being activated from the DL, Brian Sanches was outrighted to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Sanches was ineffective in 6.1 IP, posting a 9.95 ERA and allowing 4 HR in his second tour with the Phils. Halladay will start tonight against the Dodgers in LA.

Here its OK for Howard to hit vs a lefty in the 8th.
In other cities they dont just send players up aimlessly to fail.
They play to win.
SF benched Zito and Rowland simply to beat a team like the phillies.
Here we have our stars and they hit 1 3 and 4.
Regardless of anything else they will hit.
Charlie, Ruben, the fans and the orginazation stand behind this.
I am horrible for even pointing this out.

That was a total pull the pants down for me. I said youd trade them all for Dunn and they wouldnt.
With the 122 average last year.
Ryan Howard would not hit for me in a close game vs a lefty in the late innings.
He wouldnt.
Id send up a pitcher or anyone else.
A woman from the stands.
Why would you send him up?
What belief do you have?
Not even so much tonight or in the regular season.
But if the miracle happened and they made the playoffs.
If 700 year old Arthur Rhodes threw 7 000 000 pitches the big contract wasnt hitting any of them.

Obviously there is a statistical argument for what you say. But put into context. The Phils are locked into Howard – whatever you say about the decision that is a fact. So the Phils need to get what they can which means they need a motivated Howard. Pinch hitting for a star late in the game will have a negative effect on his pysche. It will, how much I don’t know. These are human beings not statistical models.
Another point is that you after you pinch hit for him he is gone. So if the close game becomes tied and you have to go around the lineup again there is no Howard and perhaps the lefty is out of the game.
When you add those two together you will tend to keep in your left handed challenged start. Which gets back to Schmenkman’s question and why the answer is none. What these manager’s know is that these are people and you have a limited bench.
We all want to win but there are lots of way to win AND lots of ways to lose.

I start Worley in game 4.
And I sit Howard and hit Worley 4th.
Worley pitches and plays first.
Guess what. It couldnt have been worse.

Hey Andy from WalMart. The Phils stunk without Howard in the lineup in case you missed it.Ty Wig and AAAAberry didn’t cut it. They won 102 games last year with Howard carrying them. Utley bats third because no one else on this team can. You are right about JRoll leading off though.

I agree. You are a major league baseball player. You get paid zillions of dollars. I get paid squat and I still try my best. If you can’t run hard to first base than you are a dog, a canine, a mutt. I decided last year when Brown didn’t run that ball out that I was done with him. I want him in CF for the rest of the year to build his trade value but I don’t want him on my team. A guy not running a ball out is kinda like what they say about dogs: A dog can be the best dog in the world until he bites. Then you take him out and shoot him. A guy not running out a grounder is despicable and it is a glimpse into a man’s heart. Word.

Howard blew out his achilles tendon on the last play of the ’11 playoffs, and it cost him half a year and his absence was a major factor in all but eliminating us from the ’12 post-season.
But he looked great in trying to run out a routine grounder, and was a “real winner” …
Just thought I’d point out the other side of the argument.
P.S. OT: I thought “Prima Donald” was that schmuck casino owner in New Jersey.

well now another smart one! what or why did howard run hard? that’s the question fool! he ran hard for me and you, and all of us fans. even after he blew it out, watch the video it’s tells you something about the man himself! he tried to run on it even after it blew but the pain must have been too much and he collapsed. and i don’t think for one second that he was thinking about 2012 he was trying to win now!
now on the other hand watch vidoes of j-bag pulling up short 99% of the time. that tells you about the man! j-bags contract he just signed has a vesting part in it . it automatically kicks in after the first 2 years if he gets a certain amount of AB’s during that time. now here’s another question . what kind of a man do you think j-bag is gonna be the next 2 years to get that fourth year of 11 mil to kick in? the howard and utley type who’ll bust it for us? or the person that you expect to pull up short for himself?

One thing about this here blog, it’s all Phillie fans, whether views are similar or not.
So I don’t mean to cross lines by a couple mentions of other clubs that might inspire anti- feelings, but a couple things on individual notes catching my attention on the out of town scoreboard as we are t minus less than an hour until The Doc.
First, Decline alert. Albert Pujols has raised his average to .279 and homer total to 16 with a 3-3 effort against Detroit. Pujols has been in decline for about 3 years. He continues to reinforce it.
Same game, Trout alert. Mike has upped his average to .354. He’s now on top of the mark needed to become the first 20 year old to hit .350 since Ty Cobb. Ty Freaking Cobb. That is huuuge when your baseball skills or ahievements are mentioned with Cobb. One irony of the Angles situation is that Pujols is like the greatest player of some measure of time or competition by reputation. He’s only a rook, with a long way to go, but wouldn’t it be ironic if the greatest whatever he is in Pujols is actually playing with the greatest in his yet to be determined category in Trout.
Lastly, in no way, shape or form am I comparing the situations, but there’s another quality pitcher making his 2012 re-debut tonight, and in his case sans any rehab against actual competition. CC Sabathia. 6 shutout innings, 4 hits, 6K, 1 walk versus a Batistaless Jays.
squad. Let’s see how close Doc comes to approaching those impressive results.

Not to take their futures for granted, although they both seem real, real bright, it’ll be fascinating to compare the free agent experiences of Trout and Harper to Cole’s when their time comes.
Cole’s will seem like .5 on the Richter scale.

I’m with Dipsy and Chuck that players need to run out ground balls, routine or not. Maybe I’m old school like that, but I’m Ed Delahanty, and in my day, if you didn’t run out grounders, you got thrown off a moving train.
@Ken: I used to pal around with Cobb at his famous drinking, whores, and card parties. Tough SOB and one of my favorite players of all-time. To see this kid match or beat his record would put him in the company of THE best. But if he does succeed can he raise his average that much more and then keep it at the level for his entire career? Not likely, but he is Jersey boy so we cannot rule anything out.
Hoping Doc sends the Dodgers to the infirmary.

ISpeaking of old timers, I’m on the Dodgers feed tonight (MLB.com), and it’s really weird listening to Vinnie live 2 days after listening to the tape of By, Bill, and Whitey. Vinnie was at his peak when they did those calls, and that he’s still very listenable to is really an amazing thing.

And the Dodgers turned the lineup, which figures to be to their advantage.
Be nice to see some mid game groove before the Doc’s night is done. At this point, 5 innings looks like the max, which was about what was expected, but even pitchinjg better, 4 might be the way to go.
It’s only his 1st start back, so we’re not looking for miracles.
