Milwaukee Brewers (44-50) at Philadelphia Phillies (41-54)

Randy Wolf ( 3-6, 5.60) vs. Roy Halladay (4-5, 3.96)

Time: 7:05, Citizens Bank Park
TV: CSN
Weather: Overcast/T’Storms, 88
Media: Twitter and Facebook

The Brewers are in town as the Phillies look to work their way back into wild card contention? Is it possible? Charlie Manuel is stillĀ  holding out hope. He seemed relatively positive before the game knowing the team is nearly fully healthy. However, with the trade deadline looming, how long will they all be together for?

The feeling around the park is that Hamels will sign. I was feeling 70/30 before this past weekend, but after hearing his quotes, I’ve lessened my stance a bit. Still, there is no time to mess around. Just about a week until the deadline.

For tonight, Placido Polanco is out with a sore back, which he started feeling last week. You’ve got to wonder how much Polly has left in the tank. He has just 17 extra-base hits this season. He’s no power hitter, but even for him that’s weak. They’ll give him a rest and let Ty Wigginton play tonight.

The Phillies will try to tee off on Randy Wolf. Wigginton has really good numbers against him (10-for-30), as does Juan Pierre, who is not in the lineup, for some reason. Pierre hits Wolf at a .412 clip, but Mayberry will start.

LINEUP: Rollins SS, Victorino CF, Utley 2B, Howard 1B, Ruiz C, Pence RF, Wigginton 3B, Mayberry LF, Blanton P.

Brew Free! or Die IPAYour Gameday Beer – Sierra Nevada Bigfoot Ale

Anything Sierra is a friend of mine. If you’re into barleywines, which I’m not, I’ve heard this is a good one. I’ll ride with SN because they just make damned good beers. It’s a gold medal winning brew just about everywhere, but be forewarned – it will put you on your ass. At 9.6 ABV, it’s strong. And it’s pretty bitter, so have one, then reassess.

GO PHILLIES!

I’ve been giving some thought today to the school of thought that Vic might not be dealt so quickly. This Quentin signing adds another 3 year OF committment, like Willingham, and Cuddyer, the market seems reasonably fixed for now. This might not thrill Shane, but at 10 mil for 3 years, he’s right in line with the market.

He won’t have quite the chance to showcase a season ending recovery now. With the Yanks acquiring Ichiro, that’s one less suitor.

Looks like the trade winds are clsoing in on whatever extent they will provide a hurrican warning. At least Ruben will enter the game when less supply is for the taking. Or so it seems. I figure that’s Thursday, after the Cole conclusion.

Even though I’m not sure these thoughts belong on this thread, I have to admit that they are definitely thoughts worth considering. The market does appear to be thinning some.

However, it’s also worth thinking that Victorino just wasn’t quite the type of player the Yanks really wanted, price considerations or no price considerations. He might be perceived as a better fit by a different team.

    Thank god
    Chris Wheeler is back.

    I missed him.

I saw Chris Wheeler drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic’s,
    And his hair was perfect.

    woo hoo

I love Hunter but if he cant field his position.
you either need t work with him so that he can or you need to move him.

This is 2 runs because he cant field his position

and all these extra pitches (25) on Doc who is already on a limit

    If the phils lose
Does he get a -1 on his war?

Its rough to see Doc this way. He hasn’t even hit 90 and he needs to be in the low 90′s to be effective.

Getting doc was a good move. Great job to the jays. Breaking down
    Old man.

This nightmare season cannot end soon enough for me. Let’s take a poll: who can field better: Pence or a little leaguer? In betting the house on the little leaguer. Time to drink heavily. Go Phils ( sound with a whimper of a wounded dog.)

I get your frustration based on tonight’s contribution to the frustration, but I’ve felt all along since 6-2 the Phils will make a run at it tonight. Understood about the lack of comebacks, and all that good stuff, but I look at the Crew pen, and I don’t see the game being over. Course they haven’t done much since they fell behind, but Randy’s about done.

Guess I sort of implied the Phils pen would hold ‘em. That’s called Risky Business, but that’s my thinking watching the game so far, disappointing as it is.

Sad to say, you couldn’t throw a better pitch than Axford did to nail Chooch in a reasonably high drama 10 pitch at bat.

Phils might lose tonight, and it’s small consolation, but at least they aren’t lifeless, like they have been in many defeats.

Still have a shot, maybe even including RyHo getting another at bat, and doing something good. Tough K that inning that could have really been a huge connection.

Ken, I’m with ya brother. Trying to remain faithful, but it is getting tough. Almost as tough as enduring TMac and Sarge’s brain farts, I mean labored breathing. Lol.

Nice to see a breath of optimism Ken but tonight it isn’t happening.

Anyone notice that in July, Hunter Pence is 12 for 62 with 1 extra base hit. His slugging percentage is now .244 for the month.
    Nice

No, but I was just looking at the in game box, and noticed his average was down to .268, so it’s not surprising.

The 4 guys pitching tonight so far’s seasons ERAs were what caught my real attention.

I’d have killed for grade point averages like those back in the day. Doc’s at 4.32 now, if my memory from a minute ago is accurate.

Games like this remind me that they have no shot to make .500 let alone the playoffs

I didn’t write it at the beginning of the inning, but I was thinking the goal is to get to Chooch as the winning run. Might could kinda sorta almost get there at this rate.

Juan Pierre has been a diamond in the rough this season. Kudos to him. C’mon Utley.

This what we pay good money to see right? Utley then Howard with a chance to tie or go ahead late in the game – and its happened before.

    Base loade Ryan…(fingers crossed)

Dr. Joyce Brothers would define that as a psychological orgasm when Ryan Howard beats the shift.

    That’s cool stuff.

Pence is up, huh? That’s okay, but frankly, I’d pinch hit Brian Schneider here.

Wouldn’t even care that he’s not on the roster.

    Let him hit anyway.

Its not the first time we slapped our old buddy FROD around and it wont be the last

Damn, Hunter took that last pitch? What a pleasant surprise.

    Good at bat.

Helped by a pitcher pitching to the tune of a bad inning.
