The second half of the season is underway! In recent history, the Phillies have been known to be a second half team. They have to start playing good baseball immediately if they want any shot at getting into the postseason. Playing against the Rockies could be a good start, especially since the Rockies have a worse record than the Phillies.
Cliff Lee is coming off his first win of the year. Lee needs to put his first half behind, and put together a nice streak of wins. Lee will be opposed by rookie Christian Friedrich, who has struggled in most of his starts.
The Rockies are without Troy Tulowitzki, who had surgery in mid-June. However, All Star Carlos Gonzalez is having a tremendous year, batting .330 with a .967 OPS. In addition, Todd Helton is always a threat.

Not necessarily fair to mention this, let alone of great importance, but Chase is now hitting below .200 since his first at bat homerun. Still less than 40 at bats. 14 total bases in those at bats.

Earlier today, I was reading a quote from Cliff Lee about his first win. He said that his failure to get a win wasn’t a big deal. Well, guess what, Cliffy. It IS a big deal. And maybe if you remembered that it’s a big deal, you wouldn’t suck so badly.
This is ridiculous. We start off the xecond half of the season against one of the few teams that’s doing worse than we are. And that team is now winning. Thanks for nothing, Cliff.

I assume he meant that the fact that he personally had not been credited with a win is not a big deal, which of course is exactly right.
At this point, and it’s a low bar, but this is a quality start for Lee. Tonight is on the offense.

It does measure out that way, but he had some bank account savings that carried him to it with that lack of control in the 6th. Wild high. Not the first time this year. But he pitched real well for the most part, great groundball ratio.
It is on the offense, but that’s so far.

dead on schmenkman! 3 runs 2 earned. schwimmer sucks, put the game out of reach. the article about our pen yesterday was encouraging. and i agreed. i even commented on schwimmers outings being better! then tonite my son and i are watching and lee is beginning to struggle and i’m squalking to my son that a real manager would have a righty and lefty warming up going into the inning with lee at 70 pitches to start.and i see schwimmer stretching his arms out then he sat down after lee gave up another hit! i’m screaming at the tv! come on charlie you moron get somebody up will ya! next thing i know dubee’s out there kiling time then schwimmer comes in . say to my son he’s been doing pretty good lately i hope he’s loose enough. no sooner i get that out boom boom boom i say my son .i’ll keep my mouthshut! i think part of our pens problems are they let the veteran starter stay in too long because of who they are and don’
t have guys loose enough when they come in! the starter gets left in and he puts runners on and gives up a few runs then nitwit decides it’s time and brings a pitcher in not warmed up then it’s over. how many times have you seen that?

I don’t think that’s true. The lead singer of the group died a few years ago, and I think the other members of the group are retired.
The Four Jokers must be a different group. Matter of fact, they may not have even been 1 hit wonders. Kind of like a certain baseball team that won Opening Day, and feels like they haven’t won since.

lefty we need alot of things. i’m getting to the point where if we’re gonna lose then bring up a couple of AA position players and see what they can do. can they be any worse? poly can’t run his hits are all soft he has practically no run production. dinglberry get two hits one infield then promptly gets picked off. he’d be at AA tomorrow replacing the player we brought up. trade vic for anykind of bullpen piece you can get. ship schwimmer out. i can go on and on. these guys piss me off i’m running out of hair to lose! lol

I was hoping this game would start off the second half on a good note. I think we were all hoping for that. I just hope this game doesn’t set the tone for the second half, because they looked deflated, just like in the first half.

I have been saying this for ever. Pierre is GREAT at the top of the lineup. He is quick, he can steal and he can bunt. His average is better then mostly everyone on the team. Why does Charlie insist on not playing him as a starter?

Because it’s a platoon. Pierre has started against 26 straight right-handed pitchers.
Mayberry starts against most LHPs, and that’s a good thing. Mayberry is hitting .258 against lefties, and has shown power, with a .506 slugging percentage and .769 OPS.
Pierre has hit lefties fairly well for his career, but this year he’s hit .171 against them with 0 walks and 0 extra base hits, for a horrendous .361 OPS.
There are 301 players who have at least 40 at bats against lefties. Pierre’s .361 ranks 299th.
Seems like the right decision.

I would rather have an actual number 2 hitter and someone who can bunt and have speed at the top of the lineup then playing Mayberry and batting him 7th and then putting Vic in at second. It messes up the whole lineup when they could have a more legitimate lineup with Pierre in there. For what its worth, Pierre’s WAR for this season is 1.04, Mayberry…-0.1…Yes, negative. He does not help the team in anyway. You cant simply look at average. You have to look at how a player overall helps a lineup and helps the team.

Please confirm to make sure I understand right: againts lefties, you would rather have an automatic out in the lineup than a better-than average hitter with some pop. The “for what it’s worth” part isn’t worth very much when you’re quoting overall stats as an argument for playing Pierre against lefties.
Mayberry has certainly struggled this year, and his 128 at bats against RHPs have been as big a hole in the lineup as 2011′s Michael Martinez was overall. But against LHPs, he’s been pretty good, and has helped the team loads more than Pierre has.

I just dont think 250 is all that much better than 170 when the one other player is a lot better player. He can work walks more, he doesnt strike out as much, he can steal bases if he gets on base, he can actually drop down a bunt. Pierre can help this team produce runs by playing small ball which is what this team needs.

Okay, but there’s lots of things Mayberry can do that Pierre can’t do like, for instance, hit the ball out of the ballpark. Mayberry also has an arm with some strength in it, as compared to the wet shoelace that is Pierre’s arm.
The bottom line is that Pierre is a better hitter than Mayberry when facing right handed pitching, while Mayberry is a better hitter than Pierre when facing lefties, and they’re getting playing time accordingly.

Only Hamels will bring more back than the second and third tier players that Polanco or Victorino or Wiggington or Pence or Mayberry or Fontenot will bring back. Nobody acquired in those deals will be seen until 2015!

I know people are upset with Schwimer. But you have to realize that he plays a very valuable role on the team. Once you see Schwimer coming into the game, you can safely change the channel without any concern that the Phillies will come back and win the game. The Phillies might be trailing by 1 to 3 runs late in the game, and you kind of know that they will not make a huge come back. You may be thinking, “Hmm… the Phillies still have a chance, but I really want to get caught up on Game of Thrones” But alas, you see Schwimer coming in from the bullpen, and you feel safe about changing the channel, putting in a DVD, turning on the Playstation or going to bed.

Sign Hamels and get what you can for the rest even if you have to pay salary in the trades. Pierre will get you a decent middling prospect or 2. He’s destroying righties and is once again a huge threat to steal. Vic will get you something. He’s killing lefties and is a gold glove caliber cf. after that only pence would net value.
