Fox Sports Jon Paul Morosi reported earlier today that as many as six teams have scouted Phils’ CF Shane Victorino including but not limited to the Dodgers, Rangers, Tigers, Pirates, Marlins, and Giants. Morosi states that one executive thinks Victorino will be the first “big” MLB name traded. Jon Heyman also reported today that the Yankees have interest in the Flyin’ Hawaiian.

Cole Hamels will receive an offer of around $120 million within the next few days according to Heyman. Ben Nicholson-Smith of MLB Trade Rumors speculates that the offer will have to exceed the similar deal handed to Cliff Lee in December 2010 and fall somewhere near Johan Santana‘s 6-year, $137.5 million deal. Nicholson-Smith says some MLB agents believe Hamels can earn up to $150 million as a free agent. The Angels, Dodgers, Rangers, Pirates, Tigers, Marlins, and Giants reportedly scouted Hamels’ last start and Ken Davidoff of the New York Post is reporting the Yankees will keep tabs on the lefty.

Lastly, we learned today that the A’s are searching for shortstop options. The A’s are not in on Jimmy Rollins, but Danny Knobler of CBS Sports believes Rollins may be a fit for the Dodgers with Dee Gordon out. Ken Rosenthal reported today that teams are interested in Rollins but are having a hard time justifying his contract. For what it’s worth, Rollins has been worth about $11.2 million this year for the Phils according to FanGraphs, earning around $11 million annually, and on pace to have a better season than he did last year, contrary to what Knobler reported.

Other teams are having trouble justifying Jimmy Rollins’ contract? Haha. How do they think we feel? Giving Jimmy up and eating some contract might be a good idea. I figure we could eat 6m over the next two years. Fangraphs can say what it wants, Jimmy is not worth that contract.

Some agents think that Cole will be worth up to $150? Wow, thats going out on a limb. Try 7/175.

    Let the trading begin.

    Bourn
    Headley
    Utley
    Howard
    Chooch

Dawg1972…I believe you have some of the dumbest comments I have ever heard. Why get rid of Howard? and why is Victorino Honerable, he’s kinda been a dick this year. And Hammels as you spell it, is sucking???? Have you watched a game this year, or are you just one of those people that like to say stupid stuff to make people that actually care mad. please keep your comments to yourself if they make no sense again!

Not to put much effort into protecting John Heyman off what might be a planted rumor with purpose, but in the spirit of defending the English language, Ian said the Heyman story was that the Phils were planning to offer around 120 mil, and the story said at least, not around. To me, that’s different. The 120 mil offer is really good as long as Hamels is oblivious to current events and doesn’t realize the spring Matt Cain story. Then again, it’s at least 120 mil, so reserving comment sans specifics is wise.l

I smirked at that as well Dipsy. Jimmy going to the Dogers will be weird. Every time i hear Dodgers and J-Roll mentioned together i keep thinking of the walk off Double against Broxton NLCS. Wow I cant believe that was almost 3 years ago. If we have to give up J-Roll and eat $$ we better get at least a MLB ready prospect and at least a B prospect. Just because the team might be in sell mode doesnt mean they should get peanuts back.

that video almost makes me sad. That team was so fun to watch.

As far as Hamels goes, I’m comfortable with 6 years, $130+ million. I think experts are right that he’ll cost more in the offseason.

I think thats a 5y120m. Which would make sense. If he cares about money he would be nuts to take that.

I agree bacardi. Could they give us Dee Gordon, straight up? Thats not a silly question (I don’t think).

Just to put this Hamels story in perspective as it intensifies at a rapid pace to its finish line, I’m offering this as perspective.

You guys realize how old this story is, of course. It’s at least 17 months ago that people were clammoring to get something done with him.

This is a link to a discussion in May of last year on the Seidman’s Brotherly Glove site. Some articulate views came across about the Phils getting Hamels done for x dollars versus today’s y speculation.

Even the timing of this discussion is old compared to this spring, when the Phils and Hamels agreed on 1 year to avoid arbitration. At that time, AGM Scott Proefrock was quoted in explaining the 1 year deal with words I shall long remember…”there’s still time to get something done long term.” I coulda swore Germany said similar words in the early days of 1945.

So here’s a look at sentiment on Hamels dating back 14 months if anyone wants to read it.

Pretty smart offer by the Phils to Cole, if that report is true. If Hamels turns it down then he loses sympathy from a lot of Phillies fans and then a trade can be made with less backlash.

I don’t think a Rollins trade will be a complete salary dump especially if Hamels does not resign. They will be aiming for some prospects.

“If Hamels turns it down then he loses sympathy from a lot of Phillies fans and then a trade can be made with less backlash.”

179 degrees opposite would not accurately measure how different my opinion is than yours. Not to sound snotty, but if it is 120 mil (as opposed to the at least clause), the Phils will get zero sympathy. Zero.

      Simple disagreement.

If we trade all our favorites, they might as well send the team to another city. We are having a bad year. Everyone has them from time to time.Give Cole a good contract and keep our favorites.

How much money does Hamels need? No matter what he signs for, he will be extremely wealthy for the rest of his life, with millions to pass on to whomever. If he really wants to spend his entire career in Philadelphia, as he says, there shouldn’t be any problem for him in doing so.

Fair statement, but honestly, how much does Phils ownership need? They been selling out for 2+ years straight and were one of the hottest teams merchandise wise over at least that span. It may as well filter to the players, especially the players who are starting pitchers and should still be in their prime in 3 years.

The Phillies ownership needs enough money left over after signing Hamels (which I hope they do) so that they still have cap space and some financial maneuverability to make deals – something the club will have to do if it wants to remain as a top-flight contender. If Hamels is really into the “Phillies thing” – that is, as a “team guy” he’s willing to leave management some room to enhance the roster and address weaknesses … then he’ll accept management’s offer of a godawful fortune … but something less than a record breaker. Hamels can’t have both, because 7/175 or 11/999 or whatever ridiculous sum is par for the course in this day and age will leave the club without options. That kind of money can’t be made up by filling seats and selling T-shirts.

First, I’d be really surprised if Rollins actually gets traded.

Second, I agree with Ken that there is a huge difference between “around” and “at least.” No years have been mentioned, either, so no one can’t say if it’s a large yearly salary or just a salary. (120M+ would be an insult if it’s spread over 150 years, but it would be ridiculously generous if it’s only for 3.)

Third, regarding “how much money does he need:” it’s not just money, it’s ego. The highest paid guy will feel he’s getting the most money because he’s the best player. His wife will think so too.

Fourth, Victorino would sign a 1year/$6M contract? I’d bet on the Astros to win this year’s World Series before I’d bet on Vic signing for that.
