Shane gave the Phillies some great seasons (MLB.com)

The Phillies have sent two time all-star outfielder Shane Victorino to the Los Angeles Dodgers for relief pitcher Josh Lindblom and Ethan Martin. Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports was the first to finalize the news, via twitter.

Victorino spent six full seasons, and parts of two others, with the Phillies, joining the team  late in the 2005 season. This year, Victorino is hitting .261 with nine homers, but also shows a career-low .724 OPS.

Lindblom, 25, has a 3.02 ERA in 47 2/3 relief innings this year. Some of his other peripherals: 8.1 K/9, 3.4 BB/9, 1.70 HR/9, and 38% groundball rate. The homers are bit concerning, but he is young and under team control through 2018. Lindblom is also pronounced “Lind-Bloom” for those who were unaware.

The righty reliever is mostly fastball/slider, topping out around 94 on the gun. He would instantly be there second best relief pitcher upon arrival.

Martin, 23, is currently in Double-A and has started 20 games this season. Over 118 innings, Martin has struck out 112 but walked 61. Walks have been an issue for him throughout his minor league career, allowing 269 free passes in 426 innings in the Dodgers organization.

Domonic Brown is on his way to Washington D.C. to meet the Phillies for their series with the Nationals.

As our Eric Seidman pointed out, it actually made some sense to keep Victorino around next year. The Phillies felt it was time to get as much for him as they could, so on he goes to the team that actually let him go in the 2005 Rule 5 draft.

As frustrating as Victorino can be at times, he gave the Phillies some really great seasons. It was the ultimate low-risk, high-reward player that often times does not pan out. He will be missed in Philadelphia, as the city had grown close with the Flyin’ Hawaiian. However, his contractual demands were over the top in the eyes of the Phillies brass, so they made a move to at least capitalize on his remaining value.

Victorino is the first chip to fall on Trade Deadline Day. It feels like the end of an era. Who will be next?

Amaro did not get much for a gold-glove centerfielder. I hear that Victorino’s salary demands demanded that the Phils trade him for some value. Good Luck SHane. You were fun to watch.

Better hope that Martin is actually good, because Lindblom is very questionable. Your idea that he’ll now be the Phils’ second best BP arm is debatable. Second most experienced, maybe, but I sure don’t like those peripherals, particularly the miserable ground ball rate and that HR/9 ratio.

I’m glad to see Brown getting another look. It’s hard to determine his true talent without giving him a shot when there’s no pressure to save the team.

So who wants to load up the busses and turn Nats park into Citizens South? What? Oh, that’s not happening this year? Sorry, my bad. Let the fire sale continue. HAHAHAHA!

I don’t understand… one day, Eric suggests trading Lee and Pence because the Phillies have too much on their payroll but then posts that the Phillies should give a $12.5 million offer to Shane Victorino… am I missing something? Vic isn’t worth that – he won’t get that on the open market and the Phillies would have been crazy to offer him that.

Lindblom is just what the doctor ordered–an actual setup man who can strike batters out. The phils have also gotten a couple of guys in the minors who can pitch in these deals as well. The RF they got from SF is about as good WAR as Pence, and Lindblom has produced .9 WAR compared to Victorino’s 1.4 WAR, but Shane is 34 and Lindblom is 24. These deals are great all around—strengthens the bullpen, gets the team younger, lowers the payroll and gets some deadwood off the team. We all will miss Shane, but he was in sharp decline.

Sounds like this is coming from a Phillies PR person…

Well, hopefully the Phillies Brass is intent on reloading in the off season and not subjecting the fan base to bad baseball until they can afford to rebuild. Don’t want to go through the dark ages again. Unfortunately, we’re stuck with the core of Howard, Utley and Rollins, which means abysmal offense for the next several years. Dom Brown can’t play baseball and hopefully that experiment is put to rest for good over the next few months. I think winning Phillies baseball is over for the foreseeable future. For a fan like me who has stuck with them for four decades, I cringe at having to endure bad baseball gain. Hopefully, it’s short lived.
