Washington Nationals (77-48) at Philadelphia Phillies (59-67)

Gio Gonzalez (16-6, 3.23) vs. Roy Halladay (7-7, 3.95)

Time: 7:05, Citizens Bank Park
TV: CSN
Weather: Mostly Cloudy, 80
Media: Twitter and Facebook

If the Phillies can’t make the playoffs, they’re going to have to play spoiler to the teams that can.  Even though the Nationals practically have a postseason spot lined up, the Phillies can still beat up on them.  The Phillies beat the Nats 4-2 last night, and will seek another victory tonight.

Gio Gonzalez is looking for his 17th win, which would give him the lead for most wins in the majors. Gonzalez has spent time in several different systems, including Philadelphia, but was always noted as a top prospect.  So far, it appears that Gonzalez has lived up to his expectations.  Gonzalez is having a great year in Washington: opponents are hitting just .214 against him and he averages 9.45 strikeouts per nine.

This brew by Troegs (out of the PA capital) is a mix of Red and Amber Ale; and as a result, it pours a vibrant orange color in your glass. The taste hits you right away with piney hops then gradually fades into tropical fruit flavors. It’s a tasty beer worth trying, especially alongside a roasted chicken. – By Brian

That first inning included a base hit by Chase off a lefty. The other day, someone asked if Utley was done, based on an unChaselike .245, which, as a headline stat, gets you thinking negatively. But if you look deeper in his numbers, you’ll find he’s not too terribly below his career norms off righties. He’s now 13-60 off lefties. What does that suggest? Nobody expected him to come back mid year and be the Chase Utley of several years ago, and even if healthy, age wise, that’d be a high expectation. But that he’s hitting pretty well against righties speaks to the difficulty of coming back mid year and banging lefties with regularity. I’m told the hardest thing to do in sports is hit live pitching. That may or may not be true. But for a lefty to hit off a lefty is the hardest thing to do in life.

I’m a lefty and the hardest thing to do in life is be married for 31 years. But that cylindrical bat and round ball thing is right up there.

Perhaps Mrs. Lefty feels similarly, making it that much harder than lefty on lefty.

        But that’s great, 31 years…keep it up.

Nobody on this team is performing up to their past standards, but Utley is certainly putting in a respectable performance and has gotten a lot of key hits.

Yeah, but the question was at his .245 average, is he done. So it’s not about what he’s done the last couple months as much is anything left for the future. My point is that there’s still some solid foundation there. And I as I expressed the other day, coming back mid year is TOUGH. So I assume you think he’s cool for next year, from the word respectable?

3 K’s, 2 grounders, and a fly ball through 2 innings for Doc. Good stuff (if I counted correctly).

Actually, that’s good even if I miscounted.

Baseball is a joke that the dodgers can grab all those players.

    Red Sox made out.

Crawford green card Beckett are all done.

Looks like KK had a nice sit down with Halladay and showed him how to pitch!

C;mon Amanda. Troegs moved out of Harrisburg a year ago. It’s made in Hershey which I consider the capital of the world, now. The new brewery is beautiful. Well worth a trip if you are in the area.

Utley is doing better at the plate recently. But his range in the field is pretty limited right now. You notice it more in person at the games.

Rats, I thought Mayberry was going to get that in in time.

I do not understand why Martinez is playing right field. Is that not like just giving the Nationals another out in the lineup. This is very confusing. Is Dom Brown hurt?

Brown’s knee is a little sore today. Nothing serious.

I’m not a huge Laynce Nix fan. He must be horrible if Mini Mart is starting over him. I don’t care about any Righty-Lefty matchup. No reason for Martinez to ever start in the outfield.

Good game so far. Mayberry hitting the dinger. If only he could be consistent. I really cannot stand Mini-Mart. I am continually amazed that he gets playing time. Oh well. Let’s notch anothe win tonight, Doc. Go Phils!

I don’t hate Martinez. He is what he is. He should not be in the majors. I would like him at Lehigh Valley. But he totally doesn’t belong in the majors.

Ok Cliff, if there was ever a perfect position to get your first win at home for the year, it’s probably tomorrow.

Big Ed, JMJ is consistent and predictable. Against a lefty, he hits. Against a righty, he doesn’t. Unfortunately, 70-75% of pitchers are righties.

Yea, Phillies won the first two games in DC, and then I decided to drive down to catch the final game of the series. Didn’t work out so well. Phillies are playing a lot better.

Schmenkman, I meant against righties. I thought that was a given. Lol. If he could do that, he’d be awesome. Hoping he heard my sarcasm.

Morris…I suggest you not go to the game tomorrow….just in case!

7/31 Phillies won over the Nats….Winning Pitcher was Lee over Strasburg
8/1 Phillies won ….Winning Pitcher was Worley over Jackson
8/2 Nats won 0-3 didnt check out the pitcher

Hamels pitched for the Phillies. Nats had some journeyman who promptly shutdown the Phillies. Phils put a AAA lineup on the field that night.

If there is one thing Ricky Bottalico knows, it’s not making the playoffs.
