2012 Gameday, Posts

Colorado Rockies (56-81) at Philadelphia Phillies (67-71)

Game 1: Tyler Chatwood (4-4, 5.53 ERA) vs. Cole Hamels (14-6, 3.04)

Game 2: Drew Pomeranz (1-8, 4.93) vs. Tyler Cloyd (1-1, 2.77)

Time: 1:05 p.m. and 6:35 p.m. at Citizens Bank Park
Weather: Mostly Sunny, 78
TV: My PHL 17
Media: Twitter and Facebook

Because of strong storms, the Phillies-Rockies game was postponed on Saturday.  We’ll have a split double-header on Sunday.

The Phillies enjoyed a nice come from behind victory on Friday.  Despite the victory, the Phillies couldn’t do too much damage against a struggling pitcher.  They will be facing  pitchers today who have poor numbers: Tyler Chatwood and Drew Pomeranz.

Cole Hamels wasn’t his best in his last start, but he continues to have a terrific season.  Hamels faced the Rockies on June 19 and pitched 8 strong innings, allowing just two runs.

Tyler Cloyd is off to a solid major league start.  He earned his first major league win in last start.  He has 14 strikeouts in 13 innings.

It looks to me that if they wait until 9:00 or so, they have a good chance to get this in. Better for Cole to wait.

When you yield a base hit to the opposing pitcher to lead off an inning, and you hold the lineup turnover without a run, your offense should feel obligated to score 2-3 runs the next inning. So we’ll see if the offense feels obligated. Those leadoff walks, or hits to a pitcher can just kill ya. Probably takes more to work through them than meets the eye.

Nice job by Chatwood, throwing a complete game by Denver Daylight time standards. Extended all the way to 75 pitches. Now the key is to exhaust their pen to set up a sweep. Ah, the best laid plans of mouse and men.

Couldn’t ask for a much more favorable situation than high OBP guy like Chooch to lead off a potential game winning inning. If rust isn’t a factor. Pretty big if.

All you can do is keep winning, and hope for a lot of help. Like the Rox pen seems inclined to give. Good job by Clutchberry there. Broom time.

One down, one to go! Six out, but would gain 1.5 on at least Pirates and Brewers if scores hold and Phils complete the sweep.

Mini Mart, making a valiant attempt to be added to the post season roster collection of 25.

If the Phils sweep.. That is a big “IF.” Let’s cross our fingers as well as other appendages.

Arizona lost. If we win (and yes, that’s a big IF right now), we’re 6 games back and tied for 5th place. That’s better than I expected.

Yup! Phils are winning! And Blanton is doing our work in Frisco (which is to say, he’s losing for the Dodgers)

St louis goes to the west coast tomorrow too.

San Diego has been playing well. Just saying.

    Tthen they play the dodgers.

And if the Phillies win they will make up ground on whoever losses. In that series.

Good comment, Andrew. This seems to not have connected with some people. You just flip flop who you want to win, and hope it works out close to your wants. That’s all you can do when you dug a hole so deep. But we at least can enthusiastically cheer for the Braves against the Brewers, and the Reds against the Pirates the next couple days. And of course, the Pads. And, oh, by the way, last but not least, the Phils.

@ Ken bottom line they gotta win

They can offord to lose 3 maybe 4 games the rest of the year.

And this game cannot be one of them.

    If they win out
22-0 then undeafted in the playoffs you can buy me a beer at the parade after Chuck A does.

I like your style, Andrew. Most people, in the state of somewhat controlled euphoria that has been brought upon us by multiple teams playing poorly all at once would offer to do the beer buying. Instead, you give me the privelege of splurging to treat you.

We must have learned how to negotiate from the same teacher.

Seriously, agree with you on the Phils have to keep winning. No question.

Rockie defenders have apparently been told that like the starters, they will only play through 75 pitches. Thus, 5 E’s thus far, rapidly approaching the Bucs 7 V the Cubs the other night.

The record for a single game….not necessarily from a reliable source in that it’s unknown, but..

“The record is 12, which has happened twice in post-1900 MLB history-1901 by the Detroit Tigers and 1903 by the Chicago White Sox.”

1901 and 1903 hardly count. If you’ve ever seen a baseball glove from that era, you’d know why I say that. You could fit about twelve of them in a modern mitt.

Was hangiing out with some Nats fans today watching football.

They want us to lose and get out of the way.

They want no part of the fightin phils in the playoffs.

If they are to make it they will be that hot team.

    And Ive said this before.
Last year I saw the Cardinals series loss 100000000000000 miles away.

If by some chance they miracled into the playoffs this year. I like thier chances alot.

Alot of people dont understand how I can say that about a 102 win team vs this years mess.
But Ken I think you can.

And wheres Brooks if the Phils sweep today I am doing a shot of Jack.

Well, a good amount of people wound up scared of the Cardinals last year. And I knew how they got in, but I still figured they were beatable, but I wasn’t like head over heels confident. This momo is a funny concept. Can turn on a dime. And it’s not like they blew the Phils out. It was a painful, yet tremendous story the way I look at it.

I still don’t think in terms of the Phils making it with much clarity, but I do wonder which of a minimum of 1 team is gonna have a very long winter because they didn’t manage to keep a one time favorable position. It might not happen that way, but it’s tight enough in both leagues that it could. The Yanks could fall victim to that, but even if the O’s and A’s don’t make it, it wouldn’t be considered a tragedy like the Braves and Cards.

At least the Phils are coming fairly close to making things interesting, which is better than it was. And if does “officially” become interesting I will be beyond fired up.

Andrew, why isn’t this game on?

Oh well I can’t watch Papelbon anyway, he pitches too slow.

On Sat. & Sun. games played after a certain time can’t be viewed on mlb.com (the message flashes too quickly for me to read what those times are…). Presumably this is because the game is being aired on a major network in most cases.

Sunday night is a single game on national TV so its not on the package.
Like the saturday fox games has exclusive rights.

    Winner winner chicken dinner.

@ Ken I didnt like the Phillies line up last year.

I am still not thrilled with some of the stars in the line up this year. And where they hit and what they are allowe to do etc etc.
But I do like some of the other aspects alot more this year than last.

down to 6 games now the Marlins, Astros and Mets.

Are any of those teams contending? Just saying

Still out by 6 games but the odds have narrowed some over the weekend. I guess we will see what Darin Ruf can do. It makes it more intersting but it will still require an incredible finish. It’s a good thing that the rosters are expanded or this doubleheader would really create a lot of problems for the Phillies this week.

It still could. The bullpen was worked pretty hard against the Rockies. Papelbon pitched in all three games, and will need a rest pretty soon. Frandsen and Ruiz will also be limited.

The expanded roster helps, but remember, it’s been expanded with minor league players.
