Wow. That’s all you can really say about the Phillies 16-1 win over the Mets to finish off the sweep in Queens. They put together 21 hits and stay afloat in the NL Wild Card race.

Ryan Howard knocked in five runs, four of them on a grand slam in the ninth inning. Chase Utley drove in four runs. Juan Pierre went 5-for-6 with five singles and Jimmy Rollins had three more hits, staying red hot.

But – there’s always a but – the Cardinals beat the Astros, so the Phillies are still four games back for the second wild card with just 12 games to play.

Simply, the Phillies are running out of time. Unless they get some help, going on a nice run here isn’t enough. They need the Cardinals, Brewers, and Dodgers to start biting the dust hard.

Gotta keep winning! Loved the first inning. All singles but they got the job done.

Gotta wonder what Mets manager was thinking in the ninth inning. The only thing that could make the game worse for the Mets would be to bring that rookie reliever in to face Utley and Howard again and have similar things happen. Well worse happen and I wonder if he will recover.

So why is it that I feel poorly about tonights game?
Why, after the Phils explode offensively and crush the opponent (especially the Muts) do I expect to see 2 or possibly 3 singles going into the 8th inning? It’s not just something we say anymore “Gee I hope they save some runs for tonights game..” – it’s like to be expected. I’ll leave the stats to Mr. Stats -
