Phils Begin Tidying Roster for Off-season

As the Phillies roll deeper into their off-season, the organization has taken to clearing room on their 40-man roster.

On Thursday, the team announced that infielder Pete Orr and catcher Steven Lerud were outrighted to Triple-A.  The 33-year-old Orr batted .315 in 35 games with the Phillies in 2012, but played the majority of his season with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.  Lerud, a 28-year-old who was signed as a minor league free agent last off-season, sported a .200 average in three big league games after being called up in August.

Additionally, righty hurler Tyson Brummett, who made his big league debut on the final day of the regular season, was claimed off waivers by Toronto on Thursday.  Brummett was a 7th round draft pick by the Phillies in 2007 out of UCLA.  The 28-year-old will likely serve as organizational depth for the Blue Jays in 2013.

The Phillies’ roster now stands at 37 players, along with four players on the 60-day disabled list.  Teams must add any eligible players to their 40-man roster by November 20th to protect them from December’s Rule 5 draft.

Chuck S beat me to it. When are they getting rid of Mini Mart?

Does seem strange. Perhaps Martinez is considered to be more versatile. Perhaps it has something to do with clubhouse chemistry. Perhaps Mini has stayed because he can switch hit, if indeed what he does can be called hitting. Perhaps these were just the two earliest moves, and Mini will be shipped out later. Perhaps he really is someone’s illegitimate child.

MM should be gonzo, period. Does he have options left?

You cannot call what Martinez does hitting. His career OPS is .513 whereas Orr’s,while bad, is .621. If Martinez was in his early 20′s when they chose him in the Rule V draft and had the potential to improve, it might make sense, but he’s already 30. This is mind boggling and, as someone described it above, scary because if he’s on the 25 man roster, Charlie might use him again to bat in high leverage situations next year.

These moves were for the 40 man roster. The 25 man won’t be finalized until the end of spring training.

I’m not going to worry about it this early in the offseason, because more moves will be made and Martinez will probably be one of them. I also look at things this way: Keeping Martinez this year allowed Amaro to trade Wilson Valdez, an over the hill utility player, for Horst, who was extremely effective out of the ‘pen and probably helped more than MiniMart hurt.

        George,

I’m aware that they were only moves to the 40-man. However, the decision that Martinez should stay and Orr should go is troubling in that Martinez is worth less and, if the team is dumping any player(s) from the 40-man, they should dump the least valuable player before the more valuable one. The fact that they didn’t release Martinez leads me to believe that he may stay in the organization and be added to the 25 man at some point during next season.

IMO- Mini Mart was only kept this season because of his ability to play back up CF after the Victorino trade, as well as infield. Hopefully once they determine a permanent, and back up CF, he will be free to apply to the nearest Walmart or Costco. Hopefully.

Actually, it should be K-Mart in recognition of his strike outs.

Its such as you learn my mind! You appear to grasp a lot approximately this, like you wrote the ebook in it or something. I feel that you just can do with a few percent to power the message home a bit, however instead of that, this is wonderful blog. A fantastic read. I’ll definitely be back.
