Our Corey Seidman reported yesterday that the Phillies were close to acquiring Houston Astros reliever Wilton Lopez per CSN’s Jim Salisbury. Lopez, 29, was due to be first-time arbitration eligible and is estimated to make around $1.4 million.
While many Phillies fans were wondering who would be included in the trade, today Phillies fans may start to wonder if the trade will happen. Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the status of the trade is now “unclear“. Another of Rosenthal’s sources indicate that the trade is still close and that the names discussed include Tyler Cloyd and possibly a “young catcher”. We will continue to follow this one.

MLBBR (MLB Blog Rumors) is reporting the possible breakdown of the trade is all Corey’s fault. But I know better. It’s just the Phillies-Houston jinx at wotrk again. If not on the field, the Oswalt trade took forever, and Pence thought he was acquired for his bat, so he left his glove in Texas. Besides, this is an annual accurence. Last year, Madson was signed, and then I guess Corey reported it, or something went wrong, and Madson was a Communist, er, Red, sorry.
Geez, I hope this gets done. Lopez would be a nice add, price pending. Or alleged price.

Can we start a petition to add Nick Swisher to this team? ….
I’d much rather have a platoon situation in CF, with Swisher in RF ….
Than have a platoon situation in RF with Victorino/ or an overpaid Pagan in CF
Swisher has the combination of OBP, with Power… I think he’s what we need

Another option would for RF is Cody Ross, then platoon CF with Mayberry & Brown/Schierholz. Lineup is
Rollins, Utley, Ruf, Howard, Ross, Ruiz, Mayberry/Brown, Frandsen – not bad, right?
Leaves some financial flexibility to fill a hole at the deadline. In any case RAJ should play the waiting game & look for value. The success of this team depends on the health & performance of those already on the team.

No thanks. Swisher will be fairly expensive, will cost a first round draft pick and has a stupid face and can’t hit in the post-season.
He’s also older than Shane Victorino and Angel Pagan, two guys who won’t cost draft picks and can play CF, which is where the real need is.

He also sh!ts on their OPS … if you’re only going to improve one spot in the OF – why not get the best player for your team. I’m more concerned with their lineup more than just their defense.
I don’t think Pagan comes much cheaper than Swisher.. and from all indications, Pagan is likely to resign with SFG.
Between Vic in CF for a year or two, with a platoon in RF ….
or Swisher in RF for 3 years, with a platoon in CF …………i’d rather have Swisher.
What i’m scared of is the Phillies paying a ton of money for Bourn, because I don’t think SPEED is something you should overpay for

When a free agent makes a choice of employer, leaving dollars out of the equation for a minute, unless there is something specific about a prospective employer, or the city they represent, several common sense factors help them decide. These might include winning now, and during the length of the contract,and living conditions for themselves and the family.
If you look at the Nats versus the Phils at present, in attempt to be objective, long story short, the Nats future seems brighterthan the Phils, and the 2 areas are pretty comparable lifestyle wise. Bourn might have a connection from his prior stay here, but reports today that the Nats are looking for a “dynamic” centerfielder, and Boras seemingly working well with Rizzo makes me think it’s gonna take that special connection, or some hard to picture development for Bourn doing another Phils career. If the Phils were that hot to trot for him, I don’t think their supposed interest in BJ would have been as one directionally pubicized as it was. Sum all that up with the liklihood that the Nats probably have more budget, and I don’t think you need to be concerned about his coiming here. We shall see.

I agree with that … I’ve said Bourn to the Nationals for about a year now. It’s a matter of do they want Bourn as leadoff and CF , with Morse at 1b … or return the team they had last year with LaRoche at 1b and Morese in LF
Also, they’ve been linked as a team interested in Zach Grienke … though i’d be shocked if he went there. They should go for depth in the rotation, maybe not another “ACE” with Strasburg and Gio Gonzalez

The Nats just traded for Denard Span, so the supply of free agent CF’s stayed the same while the demand for them was just reduced by one team. Keep waiting RAJ, keep waiting.

Trading Cloyd is fine.. but if it’s Valle, no thanks. I’m sorry but we shouldn’t give away any of our best prospects for a reliever. If there’s one thing we have in our farm that’s MLB-ready is a bunch of arms that we can throw in the pen. DeFratus, Bastardo are legit. Plus we have other guys who’ve played and succeeded at the major league level (Stutes, Aumont, Diekman, Horst, Lindblom… it is safe to expect at least one of those to blossom in 2013).
I want Victorino (or Pagan), Keppinger, and A STARTING PITCHER. I’m scared to death of a rotation with only two legit arms –feels like a repeat of last year. Sign Anibal Sanchez.

I seriously think they could’ve fit Sanchez in if the got a setup guy like Lopez cheap. They’re going to have to spend some now to get that setup guy. gh If they can keep CF, RF and Setup under $20 million I’d try to sign Sanchez 4/$60, but that might not be enough.

He’s 3-4 years younger than CJ Wilson… very similar stats too. If anything, the advanced stats give Sanchez an edge over Wilson. Sanchez SIERA in last 2 years: 3.29, 3.64. Wilson SIERA in last 2 years: 3.44, 4.19. Sanchez xFIP in last 2 years: 3.25, 3.60… Wilson xFIP: 3.41, 4.10.
I think Sanchez will sign a 4-year deal, but I’d be willing to go 5 with him. At age 28, you’d get his pure prime years.

According to ESPN.com’s Trade Rumors, the snag was an issue with Lopez’s elbow and the return was going to be Cloyd and Valle.

The answer to this is obvious. Any of the readers would say sign him to a minor league deal, but the question is when/if the Braves non tender Jair Jurrgens tomorrow, woiuld there be any enthusiasm for more than a very baic deal?
