Catching up on some rumors that went under the radar last night, the Phillies are reported no longer interested in Josh Hamilton and have begun to think about a contract extension for Roy Halladay, per Jayson Stark. Stark quotes General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr., saying he “(hasn’t) been given a real budget. I know it’s not unlimited, but that’s not usually how we work.” This was interesting – does this mean that talks with B.J. Upton have progressed to a comfort point or simply that Hamilton is asking for too much?
Per Ken Rosenthal, the Phillies have checked in on righty reliever Koji Uehara. Uehara, 37, had a 1.75 ERA in 37 appearances for the Rangers last season and a career 2.89 ERA in the Majors. Uehara turns 38 in April and will likely want more than one year. No reports on how much money or time he is seeking. Our Corey Seidman was willing to give him two years, $12 million in his Off Season Plan.
Finally, two former Phils’ minor leaguers signed yesterday. Hector Luna was picked up by the Chunici Dragons and Dewayne Wise, who spent 2010 with Lehigh Valley, signed a one-year, $700K deal to return to the White Sox.

Oh Oh this is a classic Rube guy that he will sign for 3 years. Then he will proceed to have one good year get hurt the 2nd year and never be the same.

Uehara is going to be 38 years old and is coming off a season in which injuries limited him to just 36 innings pitched. Spending $6 million for that seems…imprudent.

Thank the good Lord that Hamilton is no longer in their plans. I wasn’t for that noise when I first heard it…. too many injuries, too many problems, too much potential for disaster.

I agree.
Aside from being injury prone (we have enough of those players, thank you), I’m not sure whether Hamilton is too prone to substance abuse when not playing for God or too prone to God when not playing with substance abuse.

First of all, it’s hard to believe that a guy who has his hands in a widespread player pool would come out and say something pretty stupid like the “Phillies have no interest in Josh Hamilton. Not that the comment appeared in quotes anywhere, suggesting actual verbatim content, but even conversation with his rtepresentation that showed apples and orange level compensation ideas shouldn’t close the door like it’s permanently separate paths. Player demands and club odderings are a semi flexible collection that change as the free agent pool changes. Even commenting on ther Phils interest in Hamilton, or any other player is a tricky game that should largely be avoided. The only people that sells tickets to, are those in line to buy swamp land in Florida.
That doesn’t mean Hamilton is, or should come here. It justmeans that comment’s not too bright, and making anything of it is pretty silly. Chances are he wasn’t and doesn’t come here anyway, so the point is unfortunately moot to this specific incident.. But chances are still plausible that BJ Upton becomes a Phil, and if anyone took to heat the line that appeared somewhere the other day that the Phils are the favorites to sign him and comes back disappointed if/when he doesn’t, shame on them. Unless a team makes a firm offer, which the Phils may have, but I haven’t seen it publicized, handicapping free agents is pretty risky business.
Good move signing Josh Fields. No idea how much game he has left, but he’s a better sign that Chone Figgins would have been.

Fields could be an interesting signing. And it tells me that they’re basically committed to a Frandsen/someone else sort of thing as opposed to signing Youk. Although… I like Youk on a one-year deal.

I’m not sure anyone is really that “in” on Hamilton. Reporters say [insert team} may have interest In Hamilton, then something comes out [insert team] isn’t that interested now in a day or two or three.
I’m also not sure the report was the Phils “are no longer interested” in Hamilton. What I read was they “MAY” be out so I interpret that as “they may no longer be interested”. I’ve always thought they would probably only want Hamilton if the years were right AND they didn’t sign another big free agent OF.
Until things get decided with Upton/Bourn , I always thought Hamilton is probably a backup plan if no one is interested in giving him 7 years.

Fields was a solid AAA 3b in the Dodgers org last year. He’s probably a replacement for Frandsen until Asche is ready for AAA.

In any case, despite a horrible year, I doubt that Victorino will need to settle for a 1-year deal in order to rebuild his value.

Kendrick, May, Asche, Valle, Pettibone for Headly isn’t chopped liver. I don’t think I’d go Worley, Biddle, Joseph, and May for headly though.

Headley, who is 28, was the 2nd best 3B in all of baseball last year when judged by fWAR. His 7.5 fWAR was slightly below David Wright’s 7.8 and ahead of the AL MVP’s 7.1 and Adrian Beltre’s 6.5. If you don’t want to use WAR, but would rather look at his more traditional numbers, he produced a .376 OBP and a .498 SLG playing in what I believe is still one of the toughest hitter’s parks in baseball. Further, last year in games away from Petco, he produced a .300 / .395 / .541 triple-slash line with 18 HR’s in 80 games. He also had 17 SB’s last year and the advanced metrics show him to be a good fielder at 3B.
In case you think last year was a fluke, Headley is ranked 4th in fWAR among 3B’s over the past 3 seasons, behind Cabrera (who only played 3B for one of the three seasons), Beltre and Longoria and ahead of Ryan Zimmerman, David Wright and Aramis Ramirez.
I cannot imagine that San Diego will trade him for a package that does not include one of MLB’s top 25 prospects or top 25 players with one year’s service time. Unfortunately, the Phils don’t have any of those.

I have to agree with hk here. The Pads are not selling Headley cheap. I’m not sure they are selling at all. That’s only because Josh Byrnes (the Padres GM) said so, and we know that GM’s never lie to the press. :-)

If the Pads wouldn’t take a # 5 starter, a young RF that if AAA would be a top 3 prospect in Brown, a top 7 cacthing prospect, a top 100 prospect and Asche I would walk away and stay with Frandsen.

I’m not buying that Swisher can be had for 4/$60, but I would do that in a hearbeat. If you’re the Phils would you sign:
Swisher 4/68 (15/15/15/15, club option 15/8 buyout)
Victorino 2/24 (12/12)
Uehata 2/10 (5/5)
LT hit of 34 (which would put the Phils under in 2014 not counting raises)

Read it on MLBTR. G. King the III of the NY Post says …
King hears from an industry source who believes Swisher could find a four-year, $60MM contract, though with that many teams and big markets in the running, it wouldn’t surprise me to see that number jump to between $65-$70MM in guaranteed money.
