UPDATE: 4:56 PM – Jeff Passan of Yahoo! noted that a source is saying the Phillies and Diamondbacks are not “actively” discussing Lee-for-Upton, but that there is interest in the Diamondbacks’ young pitching.

Pedro Gomez of ESPN is reporting the Phillies and Diamondbacks have begun engaging in preliminary talks to send Cliff Lee and cash to the Diamondbacks for outfielder Justin Upton. Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports believes that the Diamondbacks are in the market for a shortstop and, because the salaries do not match, Passan believes that there would be more in this trade and possibly three or four teams, citing the Diamondbacks’ history of completing multi-team trades. More on this as it develops.

Ugh, I ‘d really like it if it was Halladay and not Lee. Lee still has a lot of great baseball to pitch. I’m not that confident about Halladay.

Doc has had more success than Lee in the past. No denying last season was his worst but Lee has done worse –
Age and fatigue could be it but, I am not ready to throw the Doc under the bus.
The reason the Phils have been so competitive since 04 is not only because of the offense but mostly due to the pitching. I think more than anything, that is the main reason fans like me were so deflated when the Phils came up short in 09, 10 & 11 – the Phils have had the best pitching staff in the ML, hands down. Getting rid of Lee (or even Doc) at this point would be putting a lock on the jail door.
