It’s another edition of our weekly off-season league review. Read ahead, as we take a tour around the globe for a look at Phillies talents including Antonio Bastardo, Raul Valdes and plenty of others, who are participating in various winter league action.

Venezuelan League-

Second baseman Cesar Hernandez (pictured, left) ended his VWL regular season batting .226 with a home run, 16 RBI and 14 steals in 44 games for Margarita, as his team did not advance to the semi-final round.  The 22-year-old switch-hitter batted a combined .291 with two homers and 57 RBI in 133 games for Double-A Reading and Triple-A Lehigh Valley during the 2012 regular season.

Shortstop Edgar Duran, also with Margarita, batted .240 with a home run and nine RBI in 36 games.  In 121 games for Class A Advanced Clearwater in 2012, Duran, 21, sported a .253/.310/.357 line.

Shortstop Freddy Galvis wrapped up his regular season with a 10-game hitting streak, during which he posted .349 batting average with three doubles and seven RBI.  Galvis batted .300 in 58 games for Zulia and has missed the early games of the semi-final round robin for undisclosed reasons, but has stated on his Twitter account that he expects to return to the team in January.

Catcher Humberto Quintero has posted a .333 average along with five doubles, a homer and 10 RBI in 26 games for Zulia.  The 33-year-old was signed by the Phillies last month after playing in 43 games with the Royals in 2012.

Outfielder Ender Inciarte is sporting a .250 batting average along with five doubles, a triple and eight RBI and 20 steals in 48 games for Zulia.  The 22-year-old batted .307 with 46 stolen bases combined at Class A and Class A Advanced in the Arizona system in 2012.

Left-handed hurler Cesar Jimenez has a 0-3 record along with three saves and a 3.86 ERA for Lara. The 28-year-old, who was signed to a minor league deal earlier this month, has struck out 26 batters and walked seven in 21 innings pitched.

Dominican League-

Antonio Bastardo had no decisions and a 7.71 ERA through four regular season outings with Cibaenas.  Bastardo has thrown one scoreless frame thus far in the post-season round robin, which began this past week.  The 27-year-old posted a 2-5 record with one save and a 4.33 ERA in 65 big league appearances with the Phillies in 2012.

Utility man Michael Martinez batted .205 in 23 regular season games for Oriente.  Thus far in the Dominican post-season round robin, Martinez is 2-for-6 with a stolen base.

Also with Oriente, outfield prospect Leandro Castro batted .313 with a double and four RBI in 32 games.  Castro is 1-for-2 with a double in the round robin thus far.  The 23-year-old was an All-Star in the Double-A Eastern League in 2012.

Raul Valdes had a strong outing in the round robin opener on Thursday, as he led Este to a win with seven scoreless innings while striking out seven, walking just one and allowing two hits.  The left-handed Valdes posted a 2.90 ERA in 27 games with the Phillies in 2012.

Australian League-

Infielder Jeremy Barnes (pictured, right), who played with Clearwater, Reading and Lehigh Valley in 2012, is sporting a .340 batting average through 27 games with Canberra, which is tied for third best in the league.  Barnes, a Notre Dame product, was the Phils’ 11th round draft pick in 2009.

Infielder Carlos Alonso is batting .222 with a homer and six RBI through 28 games for Brisbane.  The 24-year-old University of Delaware product, was the Phillies’ 32nd round draft choice in 2010.

Righty Josh Warner has a 7.36 ERA through three relief outings for Brisbane.  The 20-year-old went 5-7 with a 4.28 ERA while striking out 63 and walking 30 in 90 1/3 over 17 combined starts for short-season Williamsport and Class A Lakewood in 2012.

Catcher Liam Bedford, 19, is batting .213 with two doubles and two RBI in 18 games for Melbourne.  Bedford and Warner are native Australians.

Mexican League-

Through 30 games, catcher Sebastian Valle has tallied a .193 average with two homers and nine RBI for Los Mochis.  Valle, 22, was an All-Star in the Double-A Eastern League in 2012 prior to earning a promotion to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Valle is on the Phils’ 40-man roster.

Roberto Clemente (Puerto Rican) League-

Righty hurler Julio Rodriguez picked up two wins over the past week, pushing his record to 3-1 with a 3.67 ERA in 10 appearances (three starts).  Rodriguez, 22, has struck out 30 and walked 12 in 27 innings for Carolina.

Another solid, honest report by star reporter Jay Floyd.

And, as Ricky Riccardo would say……”Some of dez guys have a lot of splainin’ to do, Lucy! A lot of splainin’ indeed if they’re gonna stay in professional ball.”

The good news, some did quite well. Thank heavens.

MLB Rumors reports that Miami will listen to offers for Giancarlo -Mike Stanton. We desperately need a right handed power hitter.

How does this offer sound from the Phillies for Giancarlo Stanton”

We trade Dom Brown, John Mayberry, Freddy Galvis, Jesse Biddle and Sebastian Valle for Stanton.

Stanton would look sooooo good in a Phillies uniform.

Replace Mayberry with Hamels, and Valle with $100 million.

Kidding, but it would definitely take more. They might as well say they’re listening, and see if ayone makes an offer they can’t refuse.

Jeez- he’s not as good as Von Hayes for crying out loud.

If they’re going to take bids for Stanton, the Phils don’t have enough in the system to make an offer that will be competitive.

I was thinking about this earlier, tell me if I missed anyone, but all these teams have more to offer in terms of young controllable talent- The Rangers, Braves, Cardinals, maybe the Mariners and A’s too.

BTW- I read something funny, a tweet I think, when Stanton tweeted he was unhappy about the moves the Marlins were making-
The Nats won’t get him- his last name backwards is “NotNats”

Jeepers thats a lot Bart. Any offers would be easily matched by the Braves and probably Rangers. Unless Rube pulls a Rabbit out of his ass, but who knows its possible.

Whether your “it’s a lot” reaction falls into this, I couldn’t exactly say, but generally, a lot of times it sure seems like fans tend to overrate their own talent when trade rumors get suggested. I’d say the wild card is just how much of a prospect do the Marlins think Biddle is. If they love him, that package might be a good starting point. Because the Marlins are going to need to get 2 perceived bona fide long term major leaguers of not far from all star calibre to do a deal at a minimum. So if you take Mayberry out, and include Pettibone, they may think the 2 minimum is realistic enough to continue discussion.

Things can change, and it’s only grapevine talk, but Stanton is said to want to go home to Californis to play, so even farm rich clubs like the Rangers and Braves might be a little prudent
against dealing the farm for a guy who will be free agent eligible in ’17.

To say the least, the Angels might make for an interesting trde partner.

It really doesn’t matter where Stanton wants to go to play. He has no say in it for the next 4 years.

It matters. If he’s more likely to want to play in a certain place, a potential acquairing team that might have a better shot at keeping him might be willing to offer more. I guess it’s more accurate to say it potentially matters, but looking at it like the guy would go wherever he’s told is less likely to happen these days than back in the day. A lot can happen in the ensuing period before he’s a free agent, but if he puts the word out that he’s that anxious to play in California with long term in mind, the Braves might not be as inclined to pay as much as they might if he was a Georgia kid. It’s a nice length of time someone might get him for, but it’s still 2 possibilities, and it could well be a valid factor, even as a secondary consideration.

    Lefty,

Add the Rays to your list.

Each trade move made by RAJ to win now, whether Lee or Haladay or Pence or Oswalt was generally if not overwhelmingly lauded by Phillies fans. For whatever reason none of the additions resulted in a WS championship. Now we are left with an average farm system that needs additional infusions of talent and development of prospects already in place. Hopefully a legitimate prospect can be had with the 16th selection in this year’s draft.

For the most part I applaud the off-season moves so far (maybe a slight over-pay for Revere)-they tell me that the success of the team will come from the players already on the roster

The Phils were 100+ win team before all the injuries so the trades worked accept for chokig in the playoffs.

Given all the trades the farm is in pretty good position. A couple of starters in Pettiboe and Morgan should be ready to take over for Kendrick and Lannan this year and next. They have a couple of top 50 prospects and some borderline top 100s.

Uh, the Pence trade had a lot of people who disliked it, and the Oswalt trade would have very likely been unnecessary had he not traded away Cliff Lee the day they acquired Roy Halladay.

I’m not saying I would do this, but if the Phils wated to part with Lee they could do a 3 team deal with the Rangers to secure Stanton. For Example:

Cliff Lee and $20 million to the Rangers for :
Mike Olt and Leonys Martin to Marlins
    Jorge Alfaro to Phillies

    Stanton to Phillies
    Valle to Marlins

That’s creative thinking, I like it. The down side is that I’d be willing to bet that since Lee did not sign again with the Rangers when that opportunity existed, that they would be on his “no-trade” list.

Okay, I guess, maybe that might get you close (you might also have to include someone like Brown or Biddle), but then you’ve got a rotation of Hamels, Broken Halladay, Lannan, Kendrick & Cloyd.

That’s not a good pitching staff. In fact, that’s a bad pitching staff. If Halladay rebounds it becomes okay, but 36 year olds who lose velocity and have shoulder damage don’t usually revert back to their old selves.

I don’t think Lee would mind going back to Texas – he really seemed to enjoy it there and just got a better offer to come to Philly. It’s not like they’re the Royals or anything.
