The Phillies and Antonio Bastardo came to an agreement on a one-year, $1.4 million deal, avoiding arbitration. He was the last remaining player on the roster that was arbitration eligible. It was Bastardo’s first year eligible.
The 27-year old had a rough year in 2012, even though he struck out 81 batters in 52 innings. His 4.33 ERA in 65 appearances last season was well above his 2.64 ERA from 2011, when he burst onto the scene as one of the best relievers in all of baseball in the first half.

So Bastardo is now a millionaire. ;-)
Let’s see if he can prove his worth THIS season.

Yeah, the only thing about that is even at 1.4 mil he’s still dramatically underpaid. 4.33 ERA is a perfectly acceptable reliever, and 81 k over 52 innings is generally worth much more than he’s getting. If 1.4mil/Year is what he’s worth, he has already “prove(n) his worth”.

Anyone can give up grand slams, especially relief pitchers who come in with the bases already loaded to face the cleanup hitter.

Bastardo has filthy stuff and let’s hope he can avoid deed counts and find the strike zone with more frequency in 2013. I also like his name. {This dude is one “Bastardo” to hit against.”

Aside from a good 2011 season, Bastardo has proven nothing. To me he’s a league minimum guy at $500K. He hasn’t earned this $1.4M yet but I certainly hope he does on this one year contract. If not, he’ll be part of the huge roster overhaul that will be coming after the 2013 season.
