Fernando Ballesteros of Puro Béisbol first reported that right-handed veteran Rodrigo Lopez has signed a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training with the Phillies. Lopez can make up to $1 million should he play with the Phillies the entire year. Lopez, 37, posted a 5.68 ERA in four games for the Cubs last year, spending most of the year in Triple-A Iowa, where he posted a 5.28 ERA in 18 games. Lopez memorably was a stopgap starter for the Phillies in 2009, earning three wins in his first four Phillies’ starts, with three quality starts.
Analysis: It never hurts to have too much pitching. Lopez fits within the budget if he gets brought to the big club, can pitch well enough to fake it in a spot start, and can clear waivers if he needs to be sent back down after a spot start. Solid but unspectacular move to bring back a cult favorite from the 2009 squad.

No, this is not unlike last year’s signings of Joel Pineiro and David Bush for organizational depth. Put it this way, if RAJ knows Doc’s not going to be ready or Cole’s shoulder is worse than they’ve said publicly, his answer had better be someone better than Rodrigo Lopez.

If Hamels or Halladay do have problems, their answer might just as well be guys like Lopez, because their season would be sunk anyway. There’d be no sense in spending loads more money just to keep the team ahead of the Marlins.

I think if they were really worried about one of the starters they’d have gone after Javier Vasquez, not Lopez.

#bacardipr – don’t worry, don’t blink – he’ll be gone soon enough.
He was ROY runner up for the Orioles back in 2002 but after a few years he fizzled and never recovered some of that luck – yes luck –
A 37 years old, he is just looking for another paycheck.

How is this bad? Seriously…there is like ZERO risk here. He has to be on the big-league roster for the entire season in order to make $1M. And think about it….if he’s on the team for the entire year that means that he has to be good enough to stay there. And and that point he’s a steal at only $1M. This is Low Risk High Reward 101.

Its not bad but its certainly not good for anything. Lets put it this way, if we see Rodrigo Lopez in Philadelphia for anything but crab fries, there is trouble at CBP.

Id rather see them give a kid a shot over this. Been there done that, he is washed up, what a waste of money,even if it wasn’t much…. Yeah looking for depth lol,, they will find themselfs at the bottom,,,he’s not depth he’s death to any hopes if they use him.

The Phils already have all the kids they can handle until either a trade is made or they pick up some more young guys in the upcoming draft. Also Lopez has been around longer than the Rockie Mountains, and can possibly supply some wisdom to all those kids.
